- Purpose – To analyze the Swedish Advertisers’ Association role in the institutional development ofSwedish export promotion 1955-1972.Methodology/approach – Qualitative method, business interest organization theory, advertisingconcepts related to the historical development of marketing.Findings – Thanks to bottoms-up engagement of members in the mid-1950s, leading to the formationof the knowledge-exchange committee for members of the association (the E-group), the associationbecame crucial in enabling Swedish companies getting access to marketing resources when competingon foreign markets, as well as becoming a key player in supporting the collective export promotionefforts of the Swedish government. The E-Group increased member participation and knowledgeexchange among members, supporting professionalization and legitimacy of advertising practices.Limitations/implications – While based on a national case, the study illustrates how marketingassociations act in an institutional system, while being challenged by member demands to supplythem with adequate resources, highlighting the importance of analyzing both the collectiveorganizations and the political system they are part of to understand the historical development ofmarketing.Originality/ value – The history of export promotion and export advertising is not well studied on aninstitutional level. This study furthers knowledge of this significant aspect of marketing history aswell as the history of political economy, making salient the interaction between the state andorganized business interests in a key aspect of a national economy. Unga kvinnor i Luleå

- Luleå kommun har i förhållande till många jämförbara kommuner en låg andel kvinnor i befolkningen. Så har det varit under relativt lång tid. Det gäller även Norrbotten generellt i förhållande till andra län i Sverige. Luleå kan jämföras med Linköping. Båda städerna har i förhållande till sin befolkning en relativt hög andel män. Båda har universitet som signalerar en teknisk profil. Totalt sett är däremot inte LTU ett universitet med en starkt manlig studentgrupp. Endast en tredjedel av studenterna läser teknik och könsfördelningen bland studenterna på LTU är jämn.Den största enskilda mantalsskrivna åldersgruppen med kvinnor Luleå var 2016 de som är 23 år. Det är en i Sverige stor åldersgrupp och i den åldersgruppen fanns även betydlig fler män i kommunen. I åldrarna mellan 40 och 60 år råder huvudsakligen balans mellan könen medan andelen kvinnor är som störst efter sjuttioårsåldern. Framförallt är Luleå underrepresenterat med kvinnor i åldrarna 25 till 40 år. Det pekar på att fokus när det gäller åtgärder för att skapa ökad balans mellan män och kvinnor i Luleå bör riktas mot åtgärder som ökar möjligheten för familjebildande par, att efter studietiden bli delaktiga i och känna sig attraherade av Luleås bostads-, arbets-, kultur- och fritidsmarknader.En åtgärd för att åstadkomma det kan vara att öka rörligheten på arbets- och bostadsmarknaderna, öka risktagande och stärka entreprenörskapet bland de relativt stora kohorterna av invånare i medelåldern i Luleå. Det kan öppna upp för de yngre att komma in på arbets- och bostadsmarkanerna.Luleå bör framförallt sträva efter att växa snabbare och nå 100 000 invånare. Med ökat byggande blir det lättare för yngre att etablera sig och för äldre att söka nya utmaningar. I ett tillväxtprogram för kommunen bör andelen kvinnor växa snabbare än andelen män. Endast genom att sätta explicita delmål för detta kan hinder och flaskhalsar för att nå målet identifieras.

Towards Electric Aviation in the Kvarken Region

- The markets for aircraft, airlines and airports are in a phase of major reconsideration, transition and change. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this process turbulent and even more acute. Even before the pandemic, travellers questioned fossil-based aviation, a sign of the shift in preferences amongconsumers. Aircraft producers and airlines had not reacted fast enough; airlines introduced various CO2 compensation schemes, but customers were not convinced. A shift from international air over to national and intra-continental rail had started. In addition, although the car industry was slow out of its start blocks, this part of the transport industry is now intensifying the development of electric engines, batteries, and other engines based on non-fossil fuel. Lastly, and inspired by this, electricaircraft appear to be entering the scene. In order for this vision to be realised, the industry of aviation has to change. Moreover, technical and design related attributes of electric, compared with fossil,aviation might move the competitive breaking points towards air, in relation to land- and sea-based transportation. One aspect of this is the assumed possibility of electric aviation to add new shortdistance routes to the airline network, especially over sea. The Kvarken strait between Finland andSweden, dividing the Bothnian Sea from the Gulf of Bothnia, is an example. This paper is a first investigation of the possibilities to establish a commercially viable regular commuter airline over the strait. Institutional solutions are proposed, as well as measures to be taken in order to reap the benefits of such a route.

- In times of major global interconnectedness and environmental change, the pressure to identify, create, and exploit new resources is certain to intensify. Given that there are unavoidable trade-offs, conflicts, and arenas for violence involved when increasingly more material and immaterial things are turned into resources, we call for explicit research on the very process – a process that we label resourcification. The concept of resourcification shifts attention from essentialist queries about the nature of resources to a focus on the social processes through which things are turned into resources. In search of a better understanding of resources in the Anthropocene and, in particular, an understanding about the way resources emerge and are used, resourcification offers a new conceptual framework that allows for a systematic search for knowledge about the diversity of contexts, conditions, modes, and temporalities of resourcification. This Resourcification Manifesto offers a theoretical and empirical framework for a radical and disruptive approach to innovation, sustainability, and management studies and policies.

Workers’ participation in regional economic change following establishment closure

- This article analyses if and when workers affected by economic destruction in the form of establishment closures move to more productive or newly started establishments in the region, become self-employed, leave the region or become displaced. Results from multinominal probit models show that the majority of these workers face destructive employment outcomes from a Schumpeterian point of view compared to a matched sample of workers not subject to a closure. However, we do find indications of a creative destruction as a small, albeit significant, share become employed in young establishments. Different types of human capital influence the likelihood of triggering positive or negative regional outcomes. While higher education significantly decreases the risk for unemployment, high-income earners more often become engaged in creative outcomes. Firm tenure increases the likelihood of becoming employed in younger establishments. There are significant spatial differences where metropolitan regions excel as loci of creative change, whereas smaller and peripheral regions face far less creative outcomes of economic transformation.

- Mainstream economics not only generates economic inequalities, but also helps to subjugate minds, and thereby entrenches and exacerbates power imbalances through subordinated behaviour. These destructive effects are especially true in contemporary African societies where asymmetric power between elites and people are far greater. Three tracks of action are proposed in response: (1) dismantling subjugatory institutions (structural and ideational) and (2) nurturing emancipatory institutions, while (3) ensuring that access to power increasingly corresponds to knowledge, ethics and intentions that are people- and planet-oriented. This analytical approach with critical problem-determination and emancipatory solution-orientation is here labelled ‘(r)evolutionary appraisal’.

- The article studies rejected patent applications in Finland at the end of the nineteenth century. It examines the development of the patent system as part of the nation’s emerging liberal economic institutions. Internationally, patents have been employed to study technological and economic development, however, the rejected patents and the agency of the patent officials have received little attention. The article examines newly collected applications related to patenting from 1864-1884 and asks, whose applications were rejected and why. The article shows how foreigners, and Swedish applications in particular, were typical among the rejected applicants. Most applications were rejected because the officials did not see the invention as novel or assessed the application as incomplete. In their examination, the Finnish patent officials heard experts and used material objects as evidence. The article shows how the Finnish patent officials followed modern practices of patent examination already in the early 1870s—before the actual legislation and more rigorously than in the neighbouring Sweden. Even though the interests of the domestic industries were raised in some cases, the officials managed and guided the national industrial property rights by developing the patenting principles in the state administration.
