- The article will center on the necessary but always problematic notion of media borders, which has since long been scrutinized by intermedial studies. My initial observation is that it is impossi-ble to navigate in one’s material and mental surrounding if one does not categorize objects and phenomena; without categorizations everything would be a blur – diffi cult to grasp and to expla-in. However, categorization requires borders, and borders can and should always be disputed. The area of communication is not an exception: on one hand it is necessary to somehow categorize media into types, and on the other hand it is not evident how these categorizations should be made. My aim is not to argue in favor of or against certain ways of classifying communicative media, but to try to explain some of the functions and limitations of media borders. I argue, in brief, that there are different types of media borders and hence different types of media types; if these differences are not recognized, the understanding of media categorization will remain confused. Whereas some media borders are relatively stable, others are more subject to change; therefore, media borders can be understood to be both identifi ed and construed. However, in the end virtually all media borders can be bridged over through our cross-modal cognitive capacities.

- Dialogue and democracy are terms that scatter meaning—and breed confusion—across various scholarly disciplines, domains of public discourse, and areas of human action. This is because “dialogue” and “democracy” fulfill different functions and have different significations depending on the context in which they appear and are activated. Needless to say, these terms cannot be confined to political science or political theory in any strict sense. In this chapter I approach them from at least four different points of reference, which will turn out to be closely related.First, in a theoretical sense, I will argue that “dialogue” and “democracy” relate to the crucial possibility of articulating notions of universality that do not confirm Western ideologies of universalism. Second, in a more historical sense, I will demonstrate that both terms are central to any historical investigation of collective political actions and the various crowd theories that have been developed within the European social sciences for the purpose of explaining such actions (Jonsson, 2008, 2013). In a third register, the thematic of dialogue and democracy broaches the problem of the relation of aesthetics and politics in a way that helps us rethink the notion of universality as a particular articulation of aesthetics. In a fourth sense, “dialogue” and “democracy” obviously encapsulate and animate the contentious contemporary debate on the possibilities or presumed dangers of cultural diversity and multiculturalism in Western societies, and here I will argue that discussions of democracy and dialogue are therefore of particular relevance for understanding the position of the intellectual in these cultural debates and struggles.

- Autorki i Autorzy niniejszej publikacji opowiadają o roli dziedzictwa kultury we współczesnych muzeach i instytucjach sztuki, a także w organizacjach niekojarzących się bezpośrednio z kulturą, ale w których odgrywa ona ważną rolę w określaniu tożsamości i wyznaczaniu etosu. Większość Autorek i Autorów jest związana z Wydziałem Zarządzania i Komunikacji Społecznej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego jako pracowniczki i pracownicy, doktorantki i doktoranci, studentki i studenci, ale do naszego wspólnego projektu dołączyli również badacze i badaczki z innych ośrodków, od Gdańska i Warszawy po Wielką Brytanię. Redaktorzy są pracownikami UJ, zajmują się zarządzaniem w kulturze w teorii, a Łukasz Gaweł – także w praktyce. W czasie wolnym są zaś pasjonatami kultury, dla których dzień bez teatru lub muzeum jest dniem straconym. Wszystkie badania prowadzono za pomocą metod etnograficznych. Opisane przypadki zostały przedstawione w sposób jak najbardziej autentyczny i zbliżony do praktyki, z jednoczesnym zachowaniem dystansu i zaangażowania, co sprawia, że są żywe i wciągające dla Czytelnika, który może rozpatrywać różne warianty rozwiązań. Każdy rozdział zawiera opis przypadku oraz charakterystykę organizacji, ludzi, zwyczajów i sposobu, w jaki dorobek kultury przejawia się w każdym z opisywanych miejsc.

- The chapter focuses on collective identity construction process in health social movements. It examines the strategies for identity work on-line and off-line in the case of a Polish patients’ advocacy organization the Association for Medical Treatment of Infertility and Supporting Adoptions Our Stork (Nasz Bocian) as well as its Internet forum. The main question concerns the ways in which different understandings and interpretations of infertility are constructed and negotiated in the specific cultural and social context of Poland. Theoretically, the aim of the paper is to examine the process of constructing collective identity in relation to health and the body in different discursive spaces (within and outside the movement). The conclusions are based mainly on qualitative analysis of the posts placed on the forum and interviews with key activists of Our Stork.
