  • Social Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development in Sparsely Populated Areas
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SDGs in the European Region. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030912611 - 9783030912611
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social entrepreneurship and responsibility have grown in societies in recent decades. The purpose of this article is to investigate and discuss social entrepreneurship in relation to the SDGs within municipalities in sparsely populated areas in Sweden. Specifically, this article explores how politicians and officials in municipalities view social entrepreneurship, what challenges municipalities face in creating sustainable development, and how municipalities can develop conditions for collaborations between public actors and private companies in order to achieve more sustainable development within the municipality. To this end, close to 40 different stakeholders were interviewed within 15 municipalities in 2 regions in the middle of Sweden. The results illustrate that little attention was paid to the use of social entrepreneurship in these communities and regions. There is also little knowledge regarding the very concept of social entrepreneurship among municipal officials and politicians. Instead, strong focus is placed on creating jobs in the municipalities, where social entrepreneurship can play an important role. Meanwhile, sparsely populated municipalities face challenges in the form of an aging population and population decline. Furthermore, there is also a lack of competence. The companies, for their part, are aware of the important role they play in creating sustainable development in the municipality. The companies employ a large proportion and need skills. From all this, the conclusion is drawn that collaboration between different actors is necessary to create sustainable development.

  • Experiences of Small Businesses Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability during the Coronavirus Crisis. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030738464 - 9783030738471 ; , s. 135-160
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter reports on how Swedish companies have coped with the first six months of the pandemic. The basis for analyses consists of interviews with 1200 small companies from four different industry segments, whose results show different outcomes. Some categories of companies experienced and are still experiencing significant negative effects, while other businesses have been only marginally affected. A small group has noticed growing sales as well as occasional signals from the market that new products and services are needed in the near future. There are indications that small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) managers are considering social responsibility towards the employees of the companies. We would like to emphasize three different activities. Firstly, over 40% of all SME managers have during the pandemic partly abstained from salary and/or other special salary benefits. In the hotel and restaurant sector, this figure is 70% and for managers with foreign background 55% state that they have done such activities. Second, many SMEs have used governmental support to be able to keep their employed individuals part-time in the companies. As a third example, it could be worth mentioning the many companies which are looking for alternative business ideas as an alternative, which could be seen as examples of effectuation.

  • What Happens to Corporate Responsibility in a Worldwide Health Emergency?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability during the Coronavirus Crisis. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030738464 - 9783030738495 - 9783030738471 ; , s. 1-12
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this introductory chapter we discuss what happens to corporate social responsibility during the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, we consider how organisations responded to the pandemic and the implications of such organisational responses for corporate social responsibility (CSR) research and practice. We then describe the nine chapters included in the book and finally reflect on these new arrangements between businesses and society.

  • Managing the COVID-19 Crisis. A Case Study of Entrepreneurship and Social Responsibility in Swedish SMEs
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability during the Coronavirus Crisis. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030738464 - 9783030738495 - 9783030738471 ; , s. 103-134
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has posed serious challenges to businesses across the globe. However, the effects of pandemic on businesses vary widely across nations, regions, and industries. Some businesses are being pushed into liquidation and bankruptcy while others are struggling to maintain operational continuity. Yet others are forced to repurpose their expertise and resources in order to meet a sudden upsurge in the demand for their products and services. Likewise, there is a variation in the understandings and responses of entrepreneurs to the COVID-19 crisis. Our case study illustrates these variations. Using a multiple case study, we explore the perceptions, strategic responses, and managerial practices of Swedish SMEs during the COVID-19 crisis. The aim is to gain some insight into how SMEs manage the COVID-19 pandemic from both economic and CSR perspectives. The results indicate that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is related to the state of the industry in which the case companies are located, and the pre-crisis status of the companies. The perceptions of the entrepreneurs also differ. Some entrepreneurs perceive the crisis as a threat to their business while others see opportunities for innovation. These perceptions are likely to guide the strategic choices and managerial practices of the entrepreneurs. Digitalization is a common denominator with regard to social responsibility. However, the primary focus is on socially responsible practices for the health and safety of employees.

  • Engaging Successful Migrant Entrepreneurs in Socially Responsible Causes : A Case from Sweden
  • 2019. - 1
  • Ingår i: Responsible People. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030107390 - 9783030107406 ; , s. 15-38
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wide range of policy and practical initiatives aimed at improving the engagement and performance in CSR in SMEs have been initiated at all levels of society. A central issue is to what extent and how SMEs may be engaged in CSR initiatives. This chapter discusses CSR in Swedish SMEs, more specifically how successful migrant entrepreneurs (SUME) can be engaged in initiatives facilitating the labor market integration of new migrants. The CSR perceptions, motives, and priorities of SUME in participating in initiatives that address broader social issues are explored.

  • Design to Support Energy Management for Electric Car Drivers
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Automotive User Interfaces. - Switzerland : Springer. - 9783319494470 ; , s. 121-141
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electric cars (EVs) are a promising alternative to combustion engine cars to lower emissions and fossil fuel dependencies. On the downside, in comparison to internal combustion engine cars (ICE), the user experience (UX) of EVs is seriously compromised due to shorter and more varied driving range depending on driving style other context of use. A further complication is that recovering from unexpectedly low battery levels is tedious due to long charging times. This causes range stress among drivers and research has highlighted a need to improve the information and tools available in order for drivers to better understand range-influencing factors and estimations, leading to increased reliability, and trust in the information. This currently leads to poor UX that may shadow all the benefits and other important environmental and experiential qualities of electric cars. In this chapter, we will provide an introduction to the subject and go through some of our studies and key lessons that have emerged from our research. In particular, we have come to the realisation that we need to energy-empower electric car drivers in order for them to be able to conceptualise how energy is intertwined with their actions and behaviour while driving. This is important, as current tools fail to provide such empowerment, causing unnecessary surprises and worries among the drivers who call the standard tool available in the electric car for the ‘guess-o-meter’. Through our designs and discussion we demonstrate how some aspects might be addressed to energy empower electric car drivers.
