  • Importance of nutrition for elderly persons with pressure ulcers or a vulnerability for pressure ulcers: a systematic literature review
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Australian journal of advanced nursing. - 0813-0531. ; 25:1, s. 77-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of elderly people, usually with multiple illnesses, is increasing in our society. In the public debate, many scientists predict that this could lead to a considerable increase in pressure ulcers. Since elderly care was reorganised in Sweden in 1993, the situation for older people has changed. In many cases, access to geriatric expertise and nurses has been reduced and the mortality rate among patients with pressure ulcers is increasing. A literature review, including a content analysis of 16 peer-reviewed articles published between 1995 and 2005, was conducted. The aim was to describe the importance of nutrition in reducing the risk of pressure ulcers and to focus on nursing interventions. The result shows that the analysis can be summarised around four areas: nutrition, prevention, nursing and economic aspects, which elucidate the importance of ensuring that an elderly person's need for energy is met and that nutritional supplements are effective for this group of patients. Early nursing intervention and the use of questionnaires are also stressed as being important. The economic aspects of pressure ulcers are also discussed.

  • Det mörka våldet : Spåren av en subjektsprocess i Kerstin Ekmans författarskap
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines the writings of Kerstin Ekman and focuses on twelve of her works. The first is her debut novel 30 meter mord (1959), a detective novel, and the last Knivkastarens kvinna, an epic-lyric story in verse, published in 1990 though written 1984. The works of Kerstin Ekman are of great significance in many respects: one is their concentration on the development of modern society and the place of women in it. At the same time a dark vein of violence can be discerned running through all her writing from the start. The persistent nature of this violence and the field of tension between that motif and the theme of female vulnerability and strength contain psychoanalytical processes from which a subject in process can be analysed, the main aim of this thesis. The basis of my analysis is both Kristeva’s theory of “sujet en procès”, as presented in Pouvoirs de l’horreur, Histoires d’amour and Soleil noir, and her theories of literature and metaphor. In the early development of the subject Kristeva distinguishes three significant registers: abjection, narcissism and melancholia. Abjection is our most primitive attempt to separate ourselves from the mother by rejecting her, while narcissism is a concept of idealisation of an imaginary father. The idealisation and identification with this father works with abjection towards the essential break from the mother symbiosis. If this break is not fully carried through, the ego can be trapped in melancholia, but abjection and idealisation can be repeated and later carried through in other ways by sublimation in artistic form and poetical language. The literary text, seen in this perspective, is the trace of a renewed subject process.“The empty room” is shown to be an important recurrent metaphor in the written oeuvre. This metaphor is analysed as a trace of a lingering mother symbiosis, also shown by the fact that abjection and melancholia are expressed in the texts. Gradually melancholia becomes more prominent along with the appearance of masochism. A fundamental change in the subject process is discerned in Knivkastarens kvinna, where a break from mother symbiosis can be analysed. The violence running through the œuvre concerns this need for matricide, first performed in Knivkastarens kvinna.

  • Selma Lagerlöfs underbara resa genom den svenska litteraturhistorien 1891–1996
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940) is generally considered one of Sweden’s few world renowned and undisputed canonical novelists. Despite her fame and success, however, Selma Lagerlöf’s status as an important artist within the literary canon has always been problematic. This dissertation examines how literary critics initially received Selma Lagerlöf ’s literary corpus and how her corpus has been subsequently treated in Swedish literary criticism and literary histories of the twentieth century. When Lagerlöf made her literary debut with the novel Gösta Berlings saga in 1891 she helped pioneer a new symbolist, anti-realist direction in Swedish literature, known as ”nittitalismen” (the 1890s' movement). The first part of the dissertation shows how the literary establishment of her time constructed Lagerlöf ’s reputation as that of a passive re-teller, and moreover, a re-teller of considerably less radically charged material than that found in the portrayal of women’s life experiences in the novels and dramas of the preceding decade. She was made into an innate storyteller of legends and tales. In the second part of the dissertation scholarly studies of Selma Lagerlöf ’s work are explored together with surveys in literary histories. In the 1950s the first wave of Lagerlöf scholars set out to show that Selma Lagerlöf was a modern writer, fully aware of her artistry and concerned with contemporary matters. In the 1980s a new era of Lagerlöf scholarship dawned. It focused its critical attention on Lagerlöf ’s textual modernity and slowly displaced traditional positivism with hermeneutics and semiotics. In the last chapter of the dissertation surveys of male authors August Strindberg and Verner von Heidenstam are compared with surveys of Lagerlöf in literary histories. The quantitative and qualitative results are much to Strindberg’s and Heidenstam’s advantage. Strindberg remains an overwhelmingly dominant figure in Swedish literary histories. An internationally less prominent author such as Verner von Heidenstam is revered as the precursor and leader of the important 1890s’ movement in Swedish literature. Lagerlöf remains mostly framed as the great storyteller of the 1890s, despite all the academic criticism that has evolved around Lagerlöf in the latter part of the last century, showing Lagerlöf as a highly independent, original and influential artist. One conclusion that can be drawn from this dissertation is that the context of the traditional literary history needs opening up. One possibility would be to include more of the general public’s perspective and thus place more focus on the reception history of literature. Such a historiography would primarily account for how aesthetic qualities in a literary oeuvre have been used and received rather than emphasize how these aesthetic qualities fit into the traditional literary and philosophical contexts. Arguably, such a historiography would stand a better chance to do full justice to successful female authors.

  • Creating spaces for action. ANC-women politicians' views on bridewealth and gender-related power.
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The first aim of this work has been to analyse and understand the ways in which a group of ANC-women politicians reason about bridewealth/lobola – an institution about which they express differing views, in particular about whether or not it is oppressive to women. The main body of the empirical material is based on 27 interviews conducted in South Africa in the period 1996-1998. One finding of the study is that there are explicit defining discourses on lobola as well as more implicitly expressed understandings. The explicit discourses make a distinction between ’good lobola’ – which is expressed in a family-related discourse as ’a bond between families’ – and ’bad lobola’ which is expressed in, for instance, an economic discourse about ’the purchase of women’. The family-related discourse is interpreted as part of a discursive strategy to create spaces for action with respect to relations of gender-related power. (Re)definitions of lobola may be used not only to counter men’s abuse of monetary lobola but also to counter ’traditional’ gender meanings associated with lobola. Furthermore, explicit discourses on lobola are interpreted as a ‘political discourse’ which is formed both in relation to pragmatic ‘political realities’ but also in relation to hegemonic Western discourses. The political discourse on lobola in connection with ‘African identity’ constitutes a discursive strategy to provide discursive space in order for ’Africans’ to be able to (re)interpret a cherished but also controversial institution. A second aim of the study has been of a self-reflexive character. It consitutes a critique of a ‘doing gender’ theoretical perspective as well as an attempt to transcend the ‘actor/structure dichotomy’ in sociological analysis.
