  • Totalförsvarets livspolitik : Kunskapsförsörjningen i den svenska livsmedelsberedskapen
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift. - 0345-469X .- 2002-4827. ; 144:1, s. 33-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Cold War, Sweden’s total defence extended to all parts of society. Preparations for war were a normal part of daily life. Military history has received more attention in historical research, but Sweden’s civil defence has recently attracted increasing interest. This article sheds new light on the knowledge supply and political governance of the total defence. We focus on Swedish food security and preparedness (livsmedelsberedskap), which was part of the economic defences that fell under the country’s civil defence system. We examine governmental investigations into the changes in Swedish agricultural production deemed necessary to reach the Swedish government’s planned level of preparedness. Two forms of what we term ”life politics” are charted in the studies commissioned or carried out by the Swedish Board of Agriculture in the late 1970s and early 1980s. We examine how these investigations made possible political interventions targeting the human population as well as the life of plants and the cultivated land. We provide new perspectives on Sweden’s civil defence by studying the significance of nonhuman life forms to Swedish public preparedness, which have received significantly less attention from historians than the human population and the development of, for example, new defence technologies and weapon systems.

  • Ideals, governance and competencies : The complexity of implementing digitalisation in disability organisations
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Learning Disabilities. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1354-4187 .- 1468-3156. ; 52:1, s. 76-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Living in the digital era, young adults with intellectual disabilities use diverse digital products, the Internet, and social media in their daily lives. However, they may need support in digital undertakings as in other aspects of life. In a disability service context, staff are primary support providers but are restricted and guided by organisational goals and strategies. Previous research has shown that staff have dual roles as support providers and executors of organisational ambitions. This study analyses the motivations and prerequisites, as well as the obstacles to the implementation of digitalisation at a strategic level of disability services.Method: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with public officials and municipal politicians responsible for providing disability services. A thematic analysis was performed using a constructionist perspective.Findings: Three themes were identified: Intertwined ideals of digital infrastructures in disability contexts, culture of vertical governance, and developing competencies. These themes can be seen as pillars of the digitalisation of digital services at the organisation's strategic level. In addition to shedding light on specific issues, these themes reveal underlying issues relating to conceptions of support practices and organisational culture. Conclusion: Digitalisation is motivated by a desire to preserve the organisation's legitimacy and be a relevant service provider. Digital infrastructure is required for digitalisation but is lacking because of intertwined legal and moral issues. Digitalisation also appears to be hindered by organisational structures and organisational culture, whose impact greatly outweighs that of digital issues.

  • Making leisure time meaningful for adolescents : an interview study from Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adolescents' school performance is influenced by several factors and meaningful leisure time, especially organized activities, has great potential to impact academic results. Therefore, this study aimed to gain a greater understanding of how community actors perceive meaningful leisure time and how they work to create meaningful leisure time with the intention of increasing the chances for more adolescents completing upper secondary school. Semi-structured interviews with 14 informants, representing nine different community actors in a middle-sized city in Sweden, were conducted and analysed using content analysis. Results suggest that meaningful leisure time positively impacts adolescents' mental health through social relations, support, and guidance. Leisure is believed to have spillover effects on reducing stress, manage school demands and performance. Nevertheless, leisure time activities and school performance must be balanced with time and effort. Community actors work proactively with availability, individual approaches, and offering activities to create meaning. From a societal perspective, places to hang out with supportive adults, in particular structured activities, should be regarded as a social investment in adolescents' health and prospects, especially in deprived areas where fewer activities are available. Finally, ensuring meaningful leisure time is in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

  • Cyclic peptides as biological tools : Applications for diagnosis and therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aims of the projects included in this thesis were to design, synthesize and evaluate cyclic peptide scaffolds grafted with biological epitopes for their ability to bind antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19 sera. One of the main outcomes of this thesis was the observation that scaffold peptides grafted with target epitopes efficiently neutralized anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPA) from rheumatoid arthritis patients. Another main outcome was that grafted cyclic scaffold peptides demonstrated potential for use in COVID-19 diagnostics. In paper I and II, peptides grafted with epitopes from reported ACPA target proteins were designed, synthesized and evaluated for ACPA-neutralizing activity. Cyclic scaffold peptides and linear peptides were compared. In paper I, we demonstrate that the peptides based on the stable scaffold sunflower trypsin inhibitor-1 (SFTI-1) can be used to neutralize ACPA. The peptides s[Cit-Fil](306-323), s[Cit-Vim](60-75) and s[Cit-Vim](2-17) were particularly efficient, and blocked 80-93% with IC50-values ranging from 5.6 -82 µM. Moreover we show that compared to their linear counterparts, these peptides demonstrated enhanced stability in human serum. In paper II, scaffold peptides from the PDP-family (PawS-derived peptides) with different structural properties were evaluated for ACPA-neutralizing activity. By grafting the same ACPA target epitope on three PDP-peptides, their impact on antibody binding could be compared to the linear epitope and to an SFTI-grafted epitope. No substantial difference in antibody binding was contributed by the scaffolds, but a reduction in background was observed for the PDP-peptides when compared to the SFTI-1-peptide. The peptides demonstrated enhanced serum stability in vitro. In Paper III, grafted SFTI-1-scaffold peptides were applied to COVID-19 antibody detection. SFTI-1 was grafted with immunodominant epitopes from SARS-CoV-2 virus spike protein. Epitopes in linear form were synthesized for comparison. A SARS-CoV-2 ELISA was developed and a cohort of positive and negative samples were tested for anti-SARS-CoV-2 reactivity. The peptide (S2_1146-1161_c) stood out as a promising antigen and recognized positive and negative sera with similar capacity as both a lateral flow test and a commercial SARS-CoV-2 ELISA. In paper IV, cyclic scaffold peptides grafted with epitopes from SARS-CoV-2 proved useful in an antibody proximity extension assay, both at detecting and distinguishing COVID-19 positive and negative sera.

  • Digitalization of welfare organizations for persons with intellectual disabilities : between democratic ideals, legitimacy and institutional logics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Disability & Society. - : Routledge. - 0968-7599 .- 1360-0508.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information and communication technology (ICT) and digital media are less accessible for persons with intellectual disability (ID) but are important for citizenship. The aim was to conceptualize officials understanding of ICT usage among people with ID, and to analyze the possible influence of this understanding on the provision of services for people with ID. A qualitative study was conducted, using semi-structured interviews with municipal officials and politicians in the disability service area. Thematic analyses were conducted. ICT use is understood as an arena for democratization. Findings also illustrate the tension between integrity and protection as well as between legal and moral aspects of digital transformation in service provision. This understanding of digitalization is permeated by an individualized approach but conditioned by organizational issues. Disability services can be understood as undergoing digital transformation where regulative and normative elements in this area need to be harmonized to facilitate digitalization successfully. Points of interest This study examines politicians’ and officials’ perceptions of the digitalization of intellectual disability services. This is important as it influences the possibility for persons with ID to be online. Digitalization is understood to enable democratization in terms of participation in decision-making, and social activities, and to ‘be a part of society’ but the support and structure to be online are under construction. The article suggests that the process of digitalization is also about the responsibility of its provision and use, laws, and of morals, and integrity.

  • Epitopes displayed in a cyclic peptide scaffold bind SARS-CoV-2 antibodies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ChemBioChem. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 1439-4227 .- 1439-7633. ; 24:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 is a global health issue. The spread of the virus has resulted in seven million deaths to date. The emergence of new viral strains highlights the importance of continuous surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by using timely and accurate diagnostic tools. Here, we used a stable cyclic peptide scaffolds to present antigenic sequences derived from the spike protein that are reactive to SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Using peptide sequences from different domains of SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins, we grafted epitopes on the peptide scaffold sunflower trypsin inhibitor 1 (SFTI-1). These scaffold peptides were then used to develop an ELISA to detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in serum. We show that displaying epitopes on the scaffold improves reactivity overall. One of the scaffold peptides (S2_1146-1161_c) has reactivity equal to that of commercial assays, and shows diagnostic potential.

  • Differential Blood-Brain Barrier Transport and Cell Uptake of Cyclic Peptides In Vivo and In Vitro
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Pharmaceutics. - : MDPI AG. - 1999-4923. ; 15:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The blood-brain barrier (BBB) poses major challenges to drug delivery to the CNS. SFTI-1 and kalata B1 are cyclic cell-penetrating peptides (cCPPs) with high potential to be used as scaffolds for drug delivery. We here studied their transport across the BBB and distribution within the brain to gauge the potential of these two cCPPs as scaffolds for CNS drugs. In a rat model, SFTI-1 exhibited, for a peptide, high extent of BBB transport with a partitioning of unbound SFTI-1 across the BBB, K-p,K-uu,K-brain, of 13%, while only 0.5% of kalata B1 equilibrated across the BBB. By contrast, kalata B1, but not SFTI-1, readily entered neural cells. SFTI-1, but not kalata B1, could be a potential CNS delivery scaffold for drugs directed to extracellular targets. These findings indicate that differences between the BBB transport and cellular uptake abilities of CPPs are crucial in the development of peptide scaffolds.

  • Breeding beyond bodies: : Making and "doing" cattle
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Society & Animals. - : Brill Academic Publishers. - 1063-1119 .- 1568-5306. ; 0, s. 108-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dairy cows provide a spectacular example of what can be achieved with purposefulbreeding of nonhuman animals in terms of increasing production and bodily adaptationto particular production systems. This implies that humans can make nonhumanbodies take whatever form they desire. However, the assumption that breedingoutcomes are entirely shaped by humans has been criticized. This article contributesto ongoing discussions of breeds as socially constructed and applies a focus on cattleactions. Within a more-than-human biopower framework, cattle actions and ways of“doing” cattle are integral to both the notion and the future of the breed. This ethnographyof breeding Swedish Mountain Cattle provides a detailed account of themutual subjectification of cattle and farmers within an agricultural context, revealingthe scope and limits of cattle agency and how “doing” cattle affects individuals andpopulations.

  • Effekter av vintervägsaltning på kulturmiljö. En pilotstudie av fornlämningskategorin milstolpe
  • 2021
