  • Creatures, nature and solastalgia : The French and Norwegian translations of Camilla and Viveca Sten’s Merpeople series
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study focuses on Viveca and Camilla Sten’s trilogy consisting of Djupgraven (2016), Sjörök (2017), and Mareld (2018). The series is not widely translated, but has made its way to Norway and France. The motive in the trilogy is Tuva’s struggles to deal with her double status as both a human and a kind of mermaid, and her quest to defeat mythological creatures threatening both her and all human life in the archipelago. In addition, one of the main themes in the novel is the health of the Baltic Sea. The study is positioned in the intersection of descriptive translation studies (Toury, 2012; Hermans, 1999) and ecocriticism (Goga et al. 2018; Axelsson & Lindgren, 2023; Lindgren & Axelsson, 2022). We focus on how the French and Norwegian translators deal with themes related to the Baltic Sea. Of special interest are the to-do-lists with environmental advice for the reader, which conclude all three books. Another unit of analysis is the translation of the mythological creatures populating the archipelago. In the study we also draw upon the concept of solastalgia (Albrecht, 2005), when we analyze the translation of feelings of sadness and nostalgia as nature is threatened because of humans’ non-sustainable ways of living. Preliminary results suggest that regarding the names of the mythological creatures, the French translator has used a great deal of creativity, whereas the Norwegian translator has stuck to the Norwegian mythological terminology. The most interesting result, however, is that the to-do-lists have been translated literally into French, whereas the specific details related to the Baltic Sea have been generalized in the Norwegian translation.

  • Fostering Critical Literary Discussions : Analyzing the Representation of Native Americans in Children's Book Covers in Sweden and Norway
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the summer of 2023, we had the opportunity to take part in a conference on Chumash territory in California. This drew our attention to the situation of indigenous peoples, especially Native Americans, in children's literature published in our home countries, Sweden and Norway. In Sweden, a doctoral thesis (Pålsson, 2013) dealt with the subject of Swedish children's books about so-called Indians. This thesis studies the period from 1860 to 2008. Although it shows that the genre is in decline, or even that the reading of this kind of book has nearly ceased, these books have had a considerable influence on the way we see the Native Americans in Sweden and Norway. In this paper, we analyze the covers of a selection of so-called Indians books in Sweden and Norway over a period of some sixty years, up to the present day. The aim is to show the value of such an analysis for critical discussion in the classroom (Felski, 2008). As recommended in Sweden by the Swedish school curriculum Lgr22 (see also the Norwegian correspondent, LK20), “Xenophobia and intolerance must be confronted with knowledge, open discussion and active measures” and critical discussions with pupils could be such a measure. As previously shown, children's book covers studies (for ex. Axelsson & Lindgren, 2023) can be used for (eco)critical discussions in the classroom (Axelsson & Lindgren, forthcoming). In this paper, we carry out book cover analyses within the framework of race theory (see for ex. Capper, 2015) using Socio-semiotic Multimodal Analysis method (Björkvall 2009, Kress & van Leuwen 2006, Painter & Martin 2013). This analysis is followed by a discussion of how the book covers may make the children critical readers who can avoid, and prevent, racist representations of ethnic groups.

  • Le merveilleux voyage de l’album sériel entre la France et la Scandinavie : [The Wonderful Adventures of Picture Book Series between France and Scandinavia]
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Strenae. - : OpenEdition. - 2109-9081. ; 22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies the translation flows of picture book series between Scandinavia (Sweden and Norway) and France between 2011 and 2021. According to studies on literary flows, countries having so-called « dominated » and « peripheral » or « semi-peripheral » languages, for example Norway and Sweden, should import more literature from the core (France) than the other way around. However, the present study shows that this theory does not hold water regarding picture books for children aged 3-6 years, where the literary flows from the core to the (semi-)periphery are uneven, or even non-existing. We are able to ascertain that the status of the picture book series is maintained as they cross the borders between France and Scandinavia. Moreover, the series translated to French are almost always characterized by a high literary legitimacy (symbolic recognition of authors and works, limited number of titles per series, affirmation of graphic and authorial creativity), with often a representation of a Scandinavian perspective. The fact that the books originally are part of a series is rarely foregrounded as a marketing device in Scandinavia, but on the contrary, this could be the case in France. The translation flows concerning picture book series show that seriality, sales figures and literary legitimacy are compatible.

  • Ekokritiska perspektiv i Maria Parrs Keeperen og havet
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Scandinavian Studies. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 2191-9399 .- 2191-9402. ; 53:1, s. 42-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we investigate how the relationship between human and nature is rendered as Norwegian children’s book author Maria Parr’s novel Keeperen og havet [Lena, the Sea and me] is translated into Danish, English, French, German, and Swedish. Our focus is mainly on book cover images, and methodologically we use concepts and tools from Kress and van Leeuwen’s Grammar of visual design. Nature and landscape are prominent in Parr’s œuvre, which is set in the Western part of Norway, where mountains and the sea are always present. Results show that the French cover positions itself as the most ecocentric one, whereas the Swedish and the German covers are much more anthropocentric.

  • Sven Nordqvist’s Pettson and Findus Series and Children’s Education : Ecocritical Dialogues in Preschool
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Climate Literacy in Education. - 2836-4546. ; 1:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how Sven Nordqvist’s books about Pettson and Findus may be used to initiate dialogues in preschool on the relationship between humans and nature. We argue that Nordqvist’s books are especially fitting for ecocritical dialogues on three levels, on which they depart from today's ecocentric aspirations. These levels include (1) the main characters’ view of nature as a resource, (2) the untraditional representation of plants, and (3) the characters’ assumptions of control and superiority over nature, especially over (other) animals. Another implication of the article is that pre-ecocriticism children’s books, and books that are not climate fiction can be useful in preschool discussions thematizing the relationship between humans and nature.

  • Sven Nordqvist’s Pettson series and Children’s Education : Ecocritical Dialogues in Kindergarten
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since 1984, the Swedish children’s book author Sven Nordqvist (b. 1946) has published 14 books about Pettson and his cat Findus. His novels depict a harmonious relationship between human and nature. In this study, we direct the attention toward the iconotextual representation of human and nature in four of Nordqvist’s books, namely Rävjakten [The Fox Hunt] (1986), Stackars Pettson [Poor Pettson] (1987), Kackel i grönsakslandet [Clucking in the vegetable garden] (1990), and Tuppens minut [The rooster’s minute] (1996). These books are interesting, since nature and animals are foregrounded. More specifically, the corpus consists of two spreads from each book. We conduct an ecocritical reading (see Heise 2006, Garrard 2012) of text and images in the spreads, using the so-called NatChiLit-matrix (see e.g. Goga et al 2018). The image analysis is based on Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) grammar of visual design, and the text analysis on Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) Systemic Functional Grammar. Our ecocritical reading then serves as starting point for a discussion on how Nordqvist’s books may be used to initiate ecocritical dialogues (see Goga et al. forthcoming) in kindergarten. We are interested in how these books may trigger children’s reflections on ecological sustainability and their views on the relationship between human and nature (see Shugarman, 2020). Preliminary results suggest that Findus and Pettson appear as characters living in harmony with nature, whereas their neighbor Gustafsson represents an anthropocentric view on the world. These themes are interesting to raise in ecocritical dialogues with kindergarten children.
