  • The narratives of geographical indications as commons : a study on Catalan and Swedish cases
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Food, Culture, and Society. - : Routledge. - 1552-8014 .- 1751-7443. ; 26:5, s. 1014-1031
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing research that considers the geographical indications (GIs) of agricultural products and foodstuffs as commons. However, narrative approaches exploring this relationship are scarce. This research analyzed stories attached to twelve Catalan and Swedish products within the European Union’s Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) schemes to map out how narratives of commons are articulated. The analysis raised four key aspects of the narratives of GIs as commons: i) historical constitution; ii) collective effortsas a driving force behind their value; iii) co-responsibilityof the community of producers and related actors; and iv) intangible outputs and focus on heritage. The results show that the narratives of GIs as commons have a stronger presence in Catalonia and more clearly address issues of social engagement and cultural heritage than in Sweden. Internal differences were noted in the two countries and some GIs are more commercially oriented and cater for world markets while others are noncommercial and only regionally consumed. The article contributes to the research on GIs, better connecting their complexities throughout their communicative and narrative constitution and articulation as commons.

  • The Turn towards New Criticalities in the Study of Media, Communication and Journalism
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Media Theory. - : Media Theory. - 2557-826X. ; 7:1, s. 233-256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using Boltanski’s (2011) idea that critique is the contestation of social and cultural orders, different ways of such contestations in the social sciences and the humanities and in media, communication and journalism research are mapped. Four overarching orientations towards doing critique are identified – open, reforming, resonant and emerging. The critical is seen to reside in a wide landscape covering many forms of critique articulating different criticalities. It is argued that these developments in different research fields, together with new ways of looking at and relating these fields, shows a turn towards new criticalities. A communicative critique is also advocated as an instrument for more dialogue across divides of ontology and epistemology, theories and methods, in the mapping of how the critical is articulated in the social sciences and the humanities as well as in the studies of media, communication and journalism. Thereby, the article is an invitation to consider the relevance of critique and criticality, also for the post-critical movement and scholars not labelling themselves critical.

  • Sustainable development considerations in supply chains : Firms' relationships with stakeholders in their business sustainability practices—A triangular comparison
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Business Strategy and the Environment. - Oxford : John Wiley & Sons. - 0964-4733 .- 1099-0836. ; 32:4, s. 1885-1899
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to investigate focal firms' business sustainability relationships in connection with their stakeholders in supply chain networks. A questionnaire survey was sent to a sample consisting of large Swedish firms, with 107 usable questionnaires returned. The results reveal which stakeholders are of interest for firms in sustainability efforts. The results are compared with earlier findings from Norway and Spain in a triangular approach. The former is a similar country, while the latter is different to Sweden in several ways. In addition, the study uncovers which stakeholders in the supply chain network should be considered. The study also demonstrates how firms can implement business sustainability in their supply chain networks and shows the extent to which different stakeholders are considered in sustainability efforts. The study contributes to sustainability research and stakeholder theory in supply chain networks. Opposite to earlier findings, this study showed only minor influences from national culture and institutions on firms' sustainable business practices in supply chain networks. © 2022 The Authors. • Sustainable development—Direct and indirect effects between economic, social, and environmental dimensions in business practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - Oxford : John Wiley & Sons. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 29:5, s. 1158-1172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the direct and indirect effects between economic, social and environmental dimensions of triple bottom line (TBL), based on a questionnaire survey and cross-industrial sample in Sweden. The analyses apply partial least squares structural equation models. The study tests the direct and indirect effects between economic, social, and environmental dimensions of TBL and offers additional validity and reliability to establish the measurement and structural properties between the dimensions of TBL. The study extends earlier findings by explicitly discussing how the three TBL goals relate to each other and shows how the dynamic capability view can be a fruitful lens to investigate business sustainability. Some differences in sustainability business practices caused by differences in national cultures are identified. Sustainability reporting in a strong uncertainty avoidance (UA) country happens in accordance with regulations and laws. Conversely, for weak UA cultures, reporting and compliance with regulations are ways to build trust with stakeholders. That is, reporting is more transparent and widespread in weak UA countries. The study also provides a foundation to guide companies' actions of business sustainability. The model shows companies how to establish the order of actions undertaken across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. In addition, it clarifies that the economic dimension exerts an effect on the social and environmental dimensions. The model also grasps long-term economic performance by including competitiveness and brand value, while earlier research mainly has focused on more short-term measurements as return on assets. © 2022 The Authors. • A new era for critique: Towards a criticality turn in studies of media, communication and journalism in the social sciences and the humanities
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contrary to the idea of post-critique this presentation argues that a new era of criticality is present and still emerging in studies of media, communication and journalism - and more generally in the social sciences and the humanities. Critical practices and analytics are regaining steam and expanding their productive limits – both in academia and in everyday life. The presentation want to move the study and use of critique in academic work from prescribed and closed forms to multiple and open forms, focusing on the variability of critical expressions, here called criticalities. The shortcomings of critical approaches are presented and discussed through the well-known lenses of Bruno Latour (2004) and Rita Felski (2015), but the presentation draw the conclusion that a compositionist approach (Latour 2010) or new vocabularies, affects and moods (Anker and Felski 2017) can fruitfully be seen within a conceptualisation of critique as variability and spectrum of criticality. The presentation is an invitation to consider the relevance of criticality also for the post-critical movement. The notion of critical institutionalism is finally presented (Svensson 2015). Institutions and critique are closely connected (Boltanski 2011) and the role of critique in and for institutional change of media, communication and journalism is touched upon. A call for more studies of how they relate is made, especially in the present situation of impending controversy at many levels of mediated social interaction – from the geopolitical level to the everyday use of social media platforms.References Anker, E. • Priorities determining future directions of sustainable development in business models of the healthcare industry—findings and framework
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 13:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The private healthcare sector was chosen because of the fundamental importance of quality in this sector, the widespread understanding that sustainable development is part of hospital quality standards, and the compelling need for the supply chain components to work together in order to add value to the business models of private healthcare services. This study uses a qualitative methodology, striving to add value to and shed light on the relationship between private hospital communication modes and their stakeholders’ needs and their stakeholders’ expectations of business models in the marketplace and society. This research lists a range of actions and services for assessing the priorities of private hospital communication modes in business models with respect to stakeholder needs and expectations. Furthermore, the study links stakeholder needs and theexpectations of business models in private hospitals, with respect to private hospital communication modes with stakeholders, and vice versa. It also provides directions for managers in the healthcare industry to determine the appropriate actions and services for addressing stakeholders’ needs and stakeholders’ expectations of business models in private hospitals considering sustainable development. This research contributes to framing the future direction of sustainable development in business models of the healthcare industry. The paper outlines the assessment of communication modes in relation to economic, social, and environmental performance in the context of sustainable development.

  • Finding the way to the reader : Local news and the challenge to connect with the readers
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Local news journalism and newspapers are struggling to update ways to connect to and engage with readers and interested publics that are effective in the digital media environment. Such ways are tested out in the production of the news, in how the news is made accessible to readers and how it comes to be interpreted and used. This project studies an attempt at two Swedish regional newspapers, both part of newspaper groups, to connect to their readers as paying subscribers. The attempt focus on how the newspapers develop the access aspect of the relation to the readers and where news content/services are bundled with a tablet. In the study this attempt is analyzed in its organizational setting and in relation to other projects/attempts to develop connections and engagement with readers and publics – in production, in accessing the news and in use/impact.Studies of newspaper subscriptions (American Press Institute 2018), pay models for digital news (Reuters 2017, 2019), bundling of news products and direct/indirect forms of reader access (print, web, app, social media, subscription platforms, libraries, news aggregators) are briefly surveyed in the extended abstrct. As a theoretical lens network media logic (Klinger and Svensson 2015, 2016, 2018) will be used. Interviews with key persons at the newspapers and in the newspaper groups is the empirical ground together with company documents and business media reports outlining the digital transformation of the newspapers and their relations to subscribers and readers.
