  • Didaktiska val i partidemokratin : Om partiskolning och lärande i politiken
  • 2023

  • Lines of Reasoning When Designing Education for Municipal Councillors in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 67:1, s. 113-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although elected representatives play an imperative role for the functioning of a formal democracy, educational research has so far not given much attention to the education and training offered to this group of people. A democratic dilemma may arise in the design and organisation of this education that relate to local governance and policy processes. This paper investigates introductory education that Swedish municipalities offer to municipal councillors and explore the reasons behind its design. The study draws on a comprehensive set of empirical material, consisting of educational programmes from 261 Swedish municipalities and interviews with municipal representatives. The results suggest three different lines of reasoning, denoted system-oriented, relationship-oriented, and market-oriented lines, behind the design of this education. The importance of these results can be considered in relation to previous findings that a strained relation exist between elected representatives and local administrations in Sweden.

  • Swedish study circles encounter Kenyan chamas : A case study on the global interaction of traditions in non-formal adult education
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Lifelong Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0260-1370 .- 1464-519X. ; 42:3, s. 313-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports an empirical case study of a community self-help group (chama) in Western Kenya, utilising the study circle model promoted by a Swedish non-governmental organisation. Methodologically, it is a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and participant observation for data collection. The results show that the study circle idea was transferred and translated through a locally pre-existing social infrastructure for learning, i.e. a farming collective organised and based on the widespread Kenyan tradition of chama. When the chama embraced the study circle and made local sense of it, they did so by mainly sticking to the same form of meetings and activities they previously had. The added value of referring to the activity as a study circle was that it expanded the group’s networks and increased its chances to invite specialists for consultation. Also, some increase in status for the group compared to other (non – study circle) chamas was noted.

  • Popular education by and for migrants. A study of preconditions for involvement of migrant study circle participants in the Swedish Workers' Educational Association
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Education Inquiry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2000-4508. ; 14:2, s. 178-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the role of popular education for migrants in a social movement context. The aim of this study is to explore how migrants' societal involvement is enabled and constrained by participation in study circles organised in a local branch of the Swedish Workers' Educational Association (ABF). The study was designed and conducted in close cooperation with ABF. Drawing on the theory of practice architectures, the preconditions for involvement of migrant study circle participants in ABF are analysed using participant interview data. The analysis of cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political arrangements shows how the study circles are highly integrated into various ethnic associations, thus preconditioning societal involvement with upholding an ethno-cultural heritage. Societal involvement is enabled as the participants can share social resources, information, and knowledge for both navigating in and relating to the local community and society at large. Societal involvement is constrained by scarce resources and challenges related to maintaining and developing constructive relationships, both within the group and in relation to the surrounding society.

  • Party Education as Mobilisation : Framing education in Swedish and Spanish political parties of the left
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation aims to contribute knowledge of how five movement-related left parties in Sweden and Spain formulate education for their members. By analysing (i) the Swedish Social Democratic Workers’ Party, (ii) the Swedish Left Party, (iii) the Spanish Social Democratic Workers’ Party, (iv) the Spanish United Left and (v) the Spanish Podemos, the study interprets how organised educational activities are formulated and motivated with the aim to instigate member engagement. The analysis builds on interviews with leading party representatives and study leaders, study and course materials, and other official documents, which steer how the parties organise their education. With a framing perspective as a theoretical itinerary, the study emphasises parties' education as a setting where meaning is formulated to initiate collective action.   The four included papers stress and discuss how educational material is formulated and how the parties perceive and motivate organised party education. Papers 1 and 2 analyse text materials and shows how educational materials establish narratives that invites the members to become active in the parties. Even though the educational narrative is welcoming, the study materials also reinforce frames of how to be schooled into becoming an ideal party member. Papers 3 and 4 study interview materials and suggest that member education is interpreted as something that strengthens parties’ movement relations, provides useful training, opens up a space for political reflection, and constructs a feeling of community within the parties.   The dissertation emphasises that these five movement-related left parties perceive their educational activities as settings that create relations between the party and its members. Applying the framing perspective to the understudied educational practices that transpire in parties contributes to deepening the theoretical understanding of how education can be formulated in relation to its bearing on creating collective identities.

  • The Role of Social Movements in the Long-Term Swedish Involvementin Tanzanian Folk Developments Colleges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference to Celebrate 50 Years of Adult Education in Tanzania. - Dar es Salaam, Tanzania : Dar es Salaam University Press. ; , s. 182-194
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we examine the long-standing Swedish involvement in Tanzanian Folk DevelopmentColleges. We also address the wider issue of how continuity in transnational engagement canbe maintained in the field of popular and adult education during periods of significant politicaland ideological shifts. Folk Development Colleges in Tanzania are a clear example of adulteducation institutions that have survived dramatic fluctuations in political trends. The over 50Folk Development Colleges (FDC) established in Tanzania during the 1970s, as part of theTanzanian Government and President Julius Nyerere’s adult education policy plus the supportof Swedish aid, have survived significant political changes in both Tanzania and Sweden. TheSwedish aid to FDCs ended in the 1990s and adult education is in Tanzania today far frombeing a prioritized political area as it was during the 1970s and 1980s.Therefore, in additionto contributing to the existing knowledge developed regarding these colleges (Rogers, 2000;2013; 2018), the study of FDCs and the context that surrounded them can also provide lessonsof importance for understanding factors contributing to the continuity global solidarity andtransnational popular education activities.
