  • The Culturally Significant Key Component of Qigong, ‘Heart adjustment’, is Lost in Translation
  • 2017
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Qigong is a Chinese traditional ethnic sport that is practised worldwide. In the West it is often applied as an Eastern mind-body intervention. Although clinical trials have reported its positive effects, some scholars have questioned the research design and methodology. It is clear that there is a need for im-provements in the quality and comparability of studies.A lack of knowledge about the meditative aspect of Qigong may con-tribute to poor research quality. Therefore, the aims of this dissertation are to explore the meaning and functions of the culturally significant key component ‘Heart1 adjustment’ and to investigate how this basic technical component and the concept of Qigong are expressed in scientific litera-ture. Through the application of two research methods – a cross-cultural linguistic approach and a case-based comparative method – the disserta-tion shows that the meaning of ‘Heart adjustment’ relates to eight tech-niques and functions in Qigong training which affect: 1) the emotions, 2) the physical heart, 3) the mind, 4) virtue, 5) wisdom, 6) concentration, 7) desires and vision and 8) a person’s way of life and attitude. Unfortu-nately, the ‘Heart adjustment’ aspect of Qigong is excluded in the English case; where the word ‘mind’ replaces the Chinese concept of Heart. The cultural knowledge that is embedded in the abstract concept of ‘Heart adjustment’ has apparently not been understood in the West, which means that the above techniques and functions have not been specified. Conse-quently, there has been no objective basis for an evaluation of the quality of Qigong practice. From the sport science perspective, the dissertation concludes that the lack of a unified standard with which to assess the quality of Qigong prac-tice in the scientific field thus affects the research quality and data com-parability of Qigong studies. Therefore, the establishment of a methodol-ogy that measures the quality of the practice is absolutely vital.

  • Physical activity for persons with obesity—a health project reported
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Forum on Public Policy Online. - : Oxford Round Table. - 1938-9809. ; 4:Spring
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In public health contexts, increased physical activity habits and fitness (aerobic and strength capacities) are positively related for promoting health and preventing  and treating common diseases/problems, including obesity and overweight. A strongly graded inverse association between physical activity and obesity has been shown both for adults and children. However, a lower mortality risk has been shown for those with greater weight but good aerobic capacity than for those of recommended weight but less fit. On the basis of a health project with physical activity for persons with or without obesity, the paper discusses evidence-based methods for promoting physical activity. General guidelines for the amount of physical activity for persons are described, as are the numerous physiological and medical advantages of physical activity. The economic benefits are also illustrated. The paper exemplifies methods of measuring physical activity habits and physical fitness. These two factors must be observed when showing improvements in public-health contexts, including groups with obesity.

  • Persons with functional difficulties as resources in ICT design processes
  • 2008

    • Introduction Diagnostic information on new students at university level is not a regular part of planning for forthcoming students, even though there is ample of information that in that way are avoided for planning courses and developing a challenging study situation for the students. In Sweden PE teacher training are carried out at 16 universities/colleges, which means that about 60 % of all teacher training institutes have also education PE teachers. Aside from more or less regular diagnostic information and information concerning the precious experience of new student there is, at least in Sweden, also a discussion concerning the excellence in itself of the students. The aim of this study is among other things to describe the PE teacher students at GIH, their background, their experiences from PE & Health in school and what kind of competencies they have in PE and physical activity. Furthermore, we like to develop a national platform for diagnostic information covering all PE students in Sweden. In this study we present the first step in such national platform. Method As a first step we have used the information at hand at GIH and added information based on a questionnaire consisting of 44 items administered to 45 students (25 women and 20 men). Some of the items in the questionnaire were of an open-ended character. The results were analysed using SPSS. Results In our pilot study on 45 student described above 50 % had grown up in large city, the mean age is 24 years, and the entrance score were very high (from 16,2 points to 19,6 point on a 20 point scale). All students had positive experience from their previous studies and judge themselves as high achieving students. More than three quarters of the students had parents who were well educated compared to Swedish standards. Many students, 65%, had spent time in other countries and not only as tourists. Most of the students had chosen studies at GIH as a first hand choice. When accepted to GIH, almost 50% had carried out university studies. 15% of students have parents born in another country than Sweden. Most students read a daily newspaper, 35% live by themselves in an own apartment and some of them have a long distance to GIH (up to 150 kilometres). Many students at GIH have a long experience as being a leader in several situations, and in many cases within the sporting area. Most student perform well in many activities, e.g. knows how save people in water and knows about a connection between health and physical activity They knows less well about sports for disabled people and how to prepare skis for cross country skiing. Discussion It seems quite clear form this pilot study that the PE students at GIH are well prepared for their forthcoming studies. At the same time the information gathered might be used in an effective way to enhance their forthcoming studies and adjust the information in a better way than so far. The question remains as to how representative our students are with PE students at other universities and colleges in Sweden. We hope in the near future be able to answer that question and thereby increasing the discussion about the future PE studies in Sweden.

  • PE and Health Teachers : attitudes, knowledge and skills
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 35th NFPF/NERA Congress 2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • PE and Health teachers - attitudes, knowledge and skills Diagnostic information from students entering at university level is not regular a part of planning for forthcoming students and courses. A variety of information, that could adjust courses in relation to the students, is often left out. In Sweden a new teacher-training program was established in 2001. Students can choose among different pathways and create their own variation of teacher-training courses. Teacher specialisation towards PE and Health is one of the most common alternative and can be chosen at 16 universities. About 600 students get their PE and Health teacher degree every year. The aims of this study are i) to describe the current PE and Health teacher students and ii) to reflect the character of the future PE and Health teacher on a research base. About 450 questionnaires from students located at 16 universities were collected during May 2006. The questionnaire includes i) background ii) knowledge related to sports and physical activities and iii) experiences from education in the area of physical activities and health. The results focus on the above mentioned areas and similarities and differences between the universities in the light of the forthcoming PE and Health students, courses, teachers and leaders.

  • Quality of Higher Education in Sweden. Is the quality too low? : Physical Education Teacher Education Programs in Sweden
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: AEA-conference 2007.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education continually evaluates the quality of all courses and programmes offered in Sweden. These evaluations are supplemented by special thematic studies as well as evaluations based on students and their experiences of higher education. Focus in this study is the existing 16 physical education teacher training programmes in Sweden. About 450 questionnaires from students were collected during May 2006. The questionnaire includes i) background, ii) knowledge related to sports, and physical activities, and iii) experiences from education in physical activities and health. The major results are i) students have a positive attitude towards their programmes, ii) time for studying seems to be limited, and iii) the students spend much time working. These results raise questions about the quality in higher education. Is the quality lower than it should be? The results in this study can be compared with results from two nationwide surveys on students concerning aspects of studying in higher education in Sweden. In many ways the results from our study are similar to what have been shown in the nationwide surveys. First, the examination is not a part of the regular teaching process and seems to play a separate role. Second, the time spent studying seems to be limited, reaching about 20-25 hours a week. This amount of study time implies only part time education according to Swedish standards for full time education. Accordingly, based on the above mentioned aspects, one would think that many students would not pass their courses. That is not the case, however. Almost all students pass their courses. Is this an effect of low quality standards?
