  • The Return of the Repressed: Subject, Truth and Critique in Times of Post-Truth
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Philosophy of the Social Sciences. - : SAGE Publications. - 0048-3931 .- 1552-7441. ; 53:3, s. 194-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The surge of post-truth calls for a reassessment of psychoanalytic and ideology critique-approaches in the social sciences. Both traditions are dismissed by the principal antagonists in the post-truth debate, the "positivist" defenders of science and the "post-modern" critics of science. The antagonists share a predisposition towards anti-humanism, refusal to distinguish between the latent and the manifest, and adherence to descriptive methods. In order to substantiate these claims, the article investigates commonalities between B.F. Skinner and Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The article concludes that the allegedly "pseudo-scientific" or "metaphysical" concepts of Subject and Truth, pivotal to both psychoanalysis and ideology critique-approaches, need to be rehabilitated in response to the challenge of post-truth.

  • Jämställdhetspolitik som ideologi eller vetenskap? En analys av debatten om jämställdhetsintegrering i akademin
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för Genusvetenskap. - 1654-5443. ; 42:1, s. 13-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we analyze the public debate on gender mainstreaming of higher education and research in Sweden between 2016-2020, focusing on 1) positions that advocate the gender equality initiatives and 2) positions that criticize them. A recurring theme in the defense and the critique of gender mainstreaming is whether gender mainstreaming policies should be understood as ideologically driven or not and how this relates to the university's scientific task. In the analysis, we focus on which understanding of the relationship between science and politics that appears in the empirical material and how this - explicitly or implicitly - expresses different understandings of ideology and its relation to science. We find that both sides tend to build on either a negative or a functionalist/positive conception of ideology, and we argue that an epistemic approach to ideology paves the way for a more nuanced and reflexive scientific debate on the relationship between politics and knowledge.

  • The moment of post-truth for Science and Technology Studies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Post-Truth Imaginations: New Starting Points for Critique of Politics and Technoscience. - London : Routledge. - 9780429628764 ; , s. 86-110
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Authoritarian populism and science denialism have thrown the Science and Technology Studies (STS) community into a “moment of post-truth.” As is suggested by this pun on the proverbial saying, a foundational assumption of STS is called into question by post-truth: The “symmetry principle.” It lays down that STS scholars must not discriminate between true and false beliefs among the actors. Symmetrical treatment of all knowledge claims strengthens the weakest actor in a scientific controversy. That those actors deserve the support they get follows from another foundational assumption of STS, namely the reduction of science to politics. According to the “pouvoir = savoir formula”, epistemological marginalisation is identical with political marginalisation. Phenomena associated with post-truth, such as astroturfing, gaslighting, doubt-mongering, etc. tells us differently. It prompts scholars to adopt an asymmetrical stance towards actors’ self-understanding (what used to be called “false class consciousness”). To make sense of the hostility provoked by such a proposition, the chapter delves into the disciplinary history of STS. This disciplinary history underwrites the suspicion that the warnings from leading STS scholars about the return of scientism hides an even more alarming prospect. Namely, that post-truth will put ideology critique-approaches back on the agenda.
