  • Strategy-proof allocation of objects : A characterization result
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Mathematical Social Sciences. - 0165-4896. ; 128, s. 1-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers an allocation problem with a finite number of objects and unit-demand agents. The main result is a characterization of a class of strategy-proof price mechanisms on a general domain where preferences over pairs of objects and houses are rational, monotonic, and continuous. A mechanism belongs to this class if and only if the price space is restricted in a special way and, given this restriction, that the mechanism selects minimal equilibrium prices.

  • Practice beyond technology when programming and mathematics teaching converge
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines how computer programming and mathematics teaching converge in the presence of a revised mathematics curriculum for upper secondary education. The focus is on the stratified policy strategies deployed by the institutions; how teachers tactically navigated the tensions and contradictions that arose in their everyday teaching; and how these tactics later consolidated in practice. The empirical data for the study consists of two iterations of individual interviews with nine mathematics teachers who were already proficient inprogramming at the onset of the reform. The teachers’ unit plans and other programming activities, were used as starting points for in-depth discussions about their professional practices. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the context, the author also examined relevant policy documents, including the mathematics curriculum, official guidelines, and a collection of programming exercises and demonstrations provided by the Agency for Education.Along with these documents, the official strategies were also informed by the explicit decisions and implicit outcomes surrounding the National Exams. By analyzing teachers’ tactics and policy strategies, the thesis sheds light on the ways in which teachers adapted to the new curriculum and the challenges lenges they faced in integrating programming into their mathematics instruction. This research aims to contribute to a critical understanding of the complex relationship between curriculum reforms, teacher practices, and the integration of programming in mathematics education. When mathematics teachers started integrating computer programming into their subject, two tactical approaches became evident: dual teaching and interspersed programming. The teacher’s proclivity to implement dual teaching practices or interspersed programming are tactics shaped by and in response to the conditions of the new curriculum and their own preferences and views on student learning. These two tactics disclose different ontological commitments in relation to the strategies dictated by the curriculum and reflect a cardinal distinction between planning mathematics activities with elements of programming and planning programming activities with elements of mathematics. Of relevance for teachers and curriculum designers is the understanding of (a)how the notion of programming and mathematics as separate subjects oversimplifies teachers’ actual integration practices, and (b) how the curricular choices made by policy can shape the teaching tactics adopted by educators.Gradually, both the surrounding constraints and the reasons behind them evolved, rising new practices. The second iteration of interviews was designed to unveil the consequences of latter curricular constraints and delve into the teachers’ practices as they change over time. Teachers’ initial resolutions, trials and experiments with programming in mathematics are sometimes reinforced by means of perseverance and the teachers’ mature reflectionson their past experiences. Other tactics need to be refined or updated and yet some are discarded. Along this distinction, relevant categories emerged that illustrate the processes behind consolidated practices in the presence of new technologies. Furthermore, the thesis provides a discussion on how this transition is characterized by acceptance of new practices rather than acceptance of new technologies.Recognizing these aspects can guide educators and curriculum designers towards a better understanding of the complexities and nuances involved in integrating programming into mathematics education. This understanding can inform more effective teaching practices and curriculum development that support meaningful integration and promote students’ learning in mathematics with the help of programming.

  • A Review of IC Drivers for VCSELs in Datacom Applications
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Systems. - 1063-8210 .- 1557-9999. ; 32:1, s. 42-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are an attractive choice for short-range optical interconnects (OIs) in datacom applications. As the limited bandwidth of VCSEL is the major obstacle to achieve higher data rates in these optical systems, significant effort has been made to develop efficient VCSEL drivers to increase data rate while consuming less power. We review the current state of the art in VCSEL driver design, including choices of semiconductor technology, modulation format, VCSEL configuration, and pre-emphasis techniques, with an emphasis on the challenges associated with VCSEL bandwidth limitations, nonlinearities, and thermal behavior. We illustrate the choices with simulations using a physics-based VCSEL model.

  • Teaching vocational pupils in their pyjamas : a socio-material perspective on challenges in the age of Covid-19
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The international journal of information and learning technology. - Bingley : Emerald Publishing. - 2056-4880 .- 2056-4899. ; 40:1, s. 84-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Due to the global outbreak of Covid-19, Swedish teachers in upper secondary education were forced to conduct emergency remote teaching. As of today, there is a stream of research that addresses digitalization in education in light of the pandemic. Previous studies show that the challenges with the sudden intensification of digitalization have been particularly challenging in practical and aesthetic subjects. The research question is as follows: What challenges did vocational teachers experience during the emergency remote teaching caused by Covid-19 and what emergent tactics can be identified in vocational teaching practice? Design/methodology/approach: The empirical data consists of (1) interviews with two vocational teachers and, (2) workshops with 25 teacher students from different vocational programmes that addressed vocational teaching during the Covid-19 crisis. Findings: Emergency remote teaching meant challenges due to the changed socio-material environment that cannot easily be transformed to a vocational teaching setting. The challenges were related to authentic situations and material, problem solving and dexterity. Tactics that emerged as a response to the challenges were mainly connected to attempts to mimic vocational practices. Originality/value: Contributions include explaining specific challenges and possibilities in developing vocational competence when teaching is digitalised. Furthermore, it increases the understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in vocational education. By adopting a socio-material perspective on vocational competence, the authors enhance the understanding of the importance of a shared socio-material environment. © 2022, Sandra Carlsson, Karin K Flensner, Lars Svensson and Sara Willermark.

  • The analogue disruption of digitalization : the Local bases of the hospitality industry in a Global economy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780998133164 ; , s. 3984-3993
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are vital challenges for organization undergoing digital transformation, especially those that rely more and more on the ever-evolving platform economy. The hotel industry faces key problems as they need to have the power to control and augment the value chain supported by an ongoing access to accurate data (such as online customer behavior). We discuss on a conceptual level how such disruptive economic changes appear in the analogue and physical practice, at place in hotel organisations. We explore the practice of analogue disruption as it emerges as struggles and discontinuities that may not bring the expected flow of value to the business. This paper aims to examine how analogue disruptions takes place due to the ongoing digitalization in the hotel sector through the platform economy. We here apply a qualitative analysis with interpretative methodologies, that will open for further knowledge and insights on the analogue disruption of digital transformation. © 2023 IEEE Computer Society. • Are Swedish House Prices Too High? : Why the Price-to-Income Ratio Is a Misleading Indicator
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NBER Working Paper Series. - Cambridge : National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). - 0898-2937.
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • According to ECB (2023) and European Systemic Risk Board (2022), Swedish owner-occupied housing (OOH) was overvalued by about 55% in 2021q2, the largest overvaluation in the EU and EEA; according to European Commission (2023c), by about 30% in 2022. These assessments affect warnings and recommendations issued for Swedish economic policy and the shocks in EBA stress tests of Swedish banks. But these large overvaluation assessments are due to the use of misleading indicators: the deviations of price-to-income (PTI) and price-to-rent ratios from their historical averages. It is shown that according to the appropriate indicator, the user-cost-to-income (UCTI) ratio, Swedish owner-occupied houses have since 2010 instead become increasingly undervalued (not overvalued), by about 30% in 2019q4. Due to rising mortgage rates, they are less undervalued in 2023q2, but still about 20%.For Sweden, the UCTI and PTI indicators are in fact strongly negatively correlated and have opposite signs. If the UCTI indicator is right, the PTI indicator is consistently wrong. Taking the average of the two indicators is not a good idea. The PTI ratio disregards mortgage rates and other housing costs and lacks scientific support. According to a large housing literature, it is not the purchase price but the user cost that is the appropriate measure of the cost of living in OOH, the cost of the housing services that the OOH delivers. New improved estimates of the user cost are constructed, including an adjustment for a preference shift during the coronavirus crisis in favor of larger and better housing. The valuation assessments of the ECB, the ESRB, the Commission, the OECD, and the IMF are scrutinized and compared. The problem of misleading indicators and overvaluation assessments—and resulting distorted warnings and recommendations—is not restricted to Sweden but concerns several other countries in the European Union.

  • Ultrawideband RF-IQ Modulator Using Segmented Nonlinearly Scaled RF-DACs and Nonoverlapping LO Signals
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 71:5, s. 1899-1910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wideband Cartesian in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) modulator based on dual 10 b RF-digital-to-analog converters (DACs) is presented. Nonoverlapping local oscillator (LO) signals and a segmented nonlinear scaling with scaled unit cells contribute to a high linearity and allow for a low-complexity digital predistortion (DPD). Unit-cell flip-flops (FFs) and a balanced clock distribution enable a high sample rate with little skew. Out-of-band emissions are reduced through drive-slope control of the data-switch inputs. The modulator, implemented in the 22-nm fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) CMOS, operates between 20 and 26 GHz with a peak sample rate of 11 GS/s. It has been used to demonstrate the transmission of a 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) single-carrier (SC) signal at 13.2 Gb/s, a 256-QAM SC signal at 7.33 Gb/s, and an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal comprising four aggregated 400-MHz 64-QAM channels with an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 6.43%. These results demonstrate the potential of the proposed modulator for the realization of ultrawideband transmitters in high-performance millimeter-wave (mmW) systems.
