  • Evidence-based disaster risk management : A scoping review focusing on risk, resilience and vulnerability assessment
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Progress in Disaster Science. - : Elsevier. - 2590-0617. ; 23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A plethora of methods exist to aid decision-making in mitigating disaster risk, many of which fall into the categories of risk, vulnerability and/or resilience assessment methods. The objective of the present study is to provide an overview of these methods, with a particular focus on evidence that supports their practical implementation. A scoping study of scientific literature reveal 97 distinct methods. Despite the growing interest in publishing new methods, there seems to be a lack of focus on demonstrating their effectiveness in practice. The few contributions that do include some forms of evaluation typically do so by comparing the method’s output with disaster data, by contrasting it with the output of other methods, by having experts evaluate the structure of the method, or by testing the method in practice and evaluating its usage. To further strengthen the relevance of research on this topic, increased attention should be paid to this matter. A good starting point would be to use the ways of evaluation identified in this study and systematically present evidence regarding the practical usefulness of methods for risk, vulnerability and/or resilience assessment.

  • Total defense as a happy object : gendering mobilization of civil defense in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Critical Military Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2333-7486 .- 2333-7494. ; 9:4, s. 497-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the past years, the national rhetoric in Sweden has changed. Due to the Russian actions in Ukraine and Crimea, efforts towards mobilizing military and civil preparedness increased. The concept of the ‘total defence’ was reintroduced and has led to shifting priorities in Swedish politics, serving as a happy object and remedy in times of security threat and social anxiety. The article critically examines what this mobilization requires from the civil society actors. Drawing on a wide scope of material, including interviews, observations, news articles, and policy documents, our analysis shows that gender-based power and norms are integral to rebuilding the Swedish total defence. Moreover, different forms of benign masculinist protection mask processes of asymmetric influence and power distribution and renders any position of critique suspicious.

  • Understanding individual investors’ preferences and knowledge of sustainable investments
  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis aims to contribute to the field of sustainable investment by investigating individual investors’ preferences and knowledge level of sustainable investments. To achieve this objective, this thesis examined the impact of investment-related attitudes and demographic characteristics on sustainable investment choices through secondary data analysis and assessed investors’ knowledge level regarding sustainable investments through a survey. Both the secondary data and the survey used individual investors in Nordic regions as the sample.  The data analysis was performed using logistic regression and ordinary least square regression methods. The results show that risk-averse investors and investors with shorter investment horizons were more likely to choose sustainable investments. In terms of sociodemographic characteristics, sustainable investments were preferred by older, female, and less wealthy clients. Furthermore, after understanding the characteristics of individuals with sustainable investment choices, this thesis measured the knowledge level of sustainable investors and examine the relationship between investors’ knowledge level and information-seeking and advice-seeking behavior. The findings suggest that most sustainable investors had high objective financial literacy but scored low in sustainability knowledge and even lower in sustainable finance literacy. Sustainable investors search for information more actively when they have a high perceived knowledge compared to their actual knowledge. In evaluating advice-seeking behavior, it was discovered that sustainable investors who perceive themselves to be more financially literate are more likely to receive advice on sustainable investments from financial advisors. Yet, those who saw themselves as having greater sustainability literacy were less inclined to consult their financial advisors before making sustainable investing decisions. In regards to product literacy, this study found that the key information about the dark green fund, with the highest sustainable disclosure requirements, was not easy to understand compared to the ones with lower requirements.

  • Lunds Kommun Klimatpolitiska råd: Rapport 2023
  • 2023

  • Gender (in)equality within the Swedish Armed Forces : Resistance and Functional Disinclination
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Historically and traditionally, military work has been closely associated with men. However, the post-Cold War normalization process has brought about a transformation in both the Swedish Armed Forces themselves and the perception of the organization. Normative concerns, including gender equality, have gained significant prominence, compelling the armed forces to embark onvarious initiatives aimed at achieving a more gender-balanced structure. Despite the extensive profiling and efforts made by the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) over the past decades, women currently make up only 11.9% of the military personnel. This dissertation examines how (in)equality manifests itself in the military profession today, in view of the substantial changes that have occurred. The dissertation encompasses both the experiences of personnel and the actions of the organisation. By doing so, it sheds light on the gradual advancement of gender equality within the SAF, attributing this delay to resistance against change that becomes evident at the structural, organizational, and professional levels. This resistance is further explained through the concept of "functional disinclination," which emerges from the empirical studies presented in this dissertation.Utilizing a range of data and methodologies, the dissertation collectively highlights an organizational incapacity to align with the normative demands set forth. The barriers to achieving gender equality are not merely reflective of resistance; they also form a recurring pattern that impedes the implementation of normative changes

  • To stand in line and fit in—About military men's (un)reflected navigation in the armed forces
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sociology Compass. - : Wiley. - 1751-9020. ; 17:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the study is to investigate how the everyday experience of being a man in a male-dominated organization and what navigating the organization is like. The study builds on 15 interviews with men of various ages and ranks in the Swedish Armed Forces. The findings revealed three major themes that illustrate how men, and their actions, contribute to producing and re-producing gendered norms. First, the ideal military person is seen to have characteristics that are predominantly male and even though respondents only identify with these characteristics to some extent, the typical male ideal is still prevalent within the Armed Forces. Second, this image is reproduced by an uncritical stance towards the internal workings of the organization, relating to career paths and their reliance of traditional gendered roles. Third, the Armed Forces encounter resistance to gender equality work from within the military organization, in both action and inactions. We suggest this is due to a resistance to change and that work with gender equality is minimized to a shadow task that lacks committed men. We conclude that men's reality seems both obvious and unreflected, and these structures are upheld within the Armed Forces.

  • Examining Legitimacy in Government Agencies’ Crisis Communication
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Strategic Communication. - 1553-118X. ; 17:1, s. 54-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Governments exercise power over the public in many ways. One clear example is during societal crises when government agencies engage in purposeful strategic communication, issue restrictions and recommendations, and rely on people’s compliance to reach response objectives and meet needs in society. Here, issues of authority and legitimacy are crucial. In this study, we are interested in how this power is configured, and we analyze different dimensions of legitimacy in the strategic communication employed by government agencies during the Covid-19 pandemic. Drawing on empirical data from Q&A sessions of daily press briefings, we examine how the pragmatic, moral, and cognitive legitimacy was challenged and defended in the interactive process between government agencies and journalists. Our analysis shows how all three dimensions of legitimacy co-exist and reinforce one another. However, considerable weight can be ascribed to the pragmatic dimension in this process of legitimation, in which government agencies rely on knowledge-based descriptions (there is) combined with imperatives regarding what needs to be done (we must). This empirical contribution improves our understanding of both the legitimacy concept and how strategic communication is central to the exercise of contemporary government power, which relies on processes of legitimation.

  • If I tell you I will have to kill you: secrecy in public administration in a time of securitization and militarization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies on Security. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2162-4887 .- 2162-4909. ; 10:1, s. 43-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Critical security studies examine how everyday life is affected or transformed by practices that militarise civil society. This article addresses one such area: qualitative changes in the openness and transparency of public administration, instating a mode of suspicion and secrecy. The article is based on interviews and observations in the area of the total defence in Sweden, where we during three years encountered challenges in gaining access to authorities that initially welcomed participation of researchers, but progressively became inaccessible. We use these experiences to reflect on both methodological issues and wider implications for the securitisation of civil society. The article concludes that difficulties in gaining access to the field may itself serve as valuable data in understanding the changing condition of public administration in a time of militarisation.

  • Exploring Factors Promoting Recycling Behavior in Student Housing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 14:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As climate-related issues are important and concern all aspects of the built environment, there is a need to better understand the motives underlying household recycling behavior. The purpose of the present study is twofold: to investigate factors important for explaining the recycling behavior of young people and to explore respondents' own ideas regarding barriers to recycling. This paper reports on a survey conducted from 2020 to 2021 among residents of student housing in Stockholm, Sweden. Eight hypotheses were formulated based on earlier research and a model was constructed. Answers from 1202 respondents were first analyzed by logistic regression to test factors affecting respondents' self-reported recycling of paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Results show that the full model containing all predictors was statistically significant. The results showed that only four of the hypotheses were confirmed. Positive attitude toward recycling, personal norms, perceived behavioral control, and perceived convenience of recycling are positively affecting recycling behavior. In addition, 673 open answers were analyzed to provide information on unforeseen factors of importance for recycling behavior. This study adds to research by testing factors affecting recycling behaviors in a national context and by identifying new possible factors of importance. The results are also of benefit to business practitioners within the construction sector or within facility management in identifying activities that would add to sustainable development.

  • My Fault or Default—Household Behaviors Living in a Climate-Smart Building
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Buildings. - : MDPI AG. - 2075-5309. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decreasing climate impact of households is a concern for many actors. One way to address this challenge is to focus on household behaviors related to energy use and consumption. Another is to construct climate-smart houses that encourage households to utilize smart functions that reduce emissions. This article examines the link between these two strategies and investigates how living in a climate-smart house affects household behaviors, by conducting interviews with households before and after they moved into a climate-neutral house. Results indicate that overall, emissions decrease after the move, mostly due to the features of the building itself rather than changes in behavior. Unintended effects were also observed, calling into question which strategy is most effective in reducing a household’s climate footprint.
