  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sandro Key-Åberg is one of the most important poets in post-war Swedish literature. The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate and comment on Key-Åberg's literary work from his debut in the anthology Ny Lyrik 1947 to O Scenprator (1965). His "Scenprator", (speakies), short sketches written for the theatre, marked a high water mark of his authorship and were played on a number of theatres both in Sweden and abroad. The opening biographical chapter, based on archive material previously only partly known, describes Key-Åberg's trouble-filled childhood. Born out of wedlock he was left in the care of foster-parents. He spent his infant years in Italy, after which he was moved to different foster homes in Sweden. His mother lived abroad most of the time, and his father would not have any contact either with her or his son. Knowledge of these painful childhood experiences is a useful tool when analysing Key-Åberg's texts. The long second chapter, "Sandro Key-Åberg's works 1947-1964", begins with a chronological overview of the books he published during this period. The different works of poetry are considered from a comprehensive point of view, the distinctive features are emphasised and his authorship is contextualized. It has quite rightly been asserted that Key-Åberg derived means of expression from expressionistic authors such as Birger Sjöberg (particularly Kriser och Kransar) and Elmer Diktonius. In this chapter Harry Martinson's and Gunnar Ekelöf's importance is stressed. Morover, the stylistic shift from a fairly hermetic, modernistic lyric poetry to more open poetry in different genres is described. The following section analyses the reception given to Key-Åberg's collections of poetry up to 1963 by some important critics in Swedish newspapers and journals. The mainly positive criticism considered Key-Åberg an eccentric in the Swedish literature of the time. His "angular" style, reminiscent of wood-carving, attracted attention as did his skilful use of metaphor.A third section, "Deformation as a theme in Key-Åberg's early poetry", contains interpretations of a number of representative texts on existential questions such as being an outsider, growing old and death. Death is the dominant theme and often appears as a subject in his poems; a figure that is a constant threat, though at times also a temptation. Key-Åberg demonstrates, however, how life's positive force defiantly manifests itself, often in "low" forms of life such as children, old people and other vulnerable beings. The third chapter begins with a description of the changing aesthetics of the 60s and of Key-Åberg's relation to new ideas such as concretism, absurdism (in particular Samuel Beckett's plays) and pop art. Then follows an exposition of the form and content of his "speakies" and a compilation of the mainly positive reviews of the opening performance. Key-Åberg's speakies demonstrate not only his sense of humour and satire but also how language conventions create contradictionary and illogical statements. The thesis concludes with a short overview of Key-Åberg's considerable writings after 1965. A large number of unpublished poems are listed in an appendix.
