  • Global public health leadership: The vital element in managing global health crises
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of global health. - : International Global Health Society. - 2047-2986 .- 2047-2978. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Health Regulations Treaty (IHRT) are re- sponsible for modelling global public health crises, and management and mitigation of their consequences. However, both duties are delivered in all nations by their national public health systems. Therefore, the implementation of public health policies at the national level depends on the public trust of the national authorities. A trustful relationship is necessary for developing and maintaining the well-being of a community through various public health programs. The principle aim of public health programs is to assess all risks, to identify underserved populations, and to initiate preventive measures, such as vaccines, non-pharmaceutical interventions (eg, social distancing, isolation) and vector control, through collaboration and coordination with other agencies and organizations, such as hospitals, and schools. These efforts require management authority, resources and financial support for public health and community research and sustainability of the changes they demand.

  • Development of calibration technique for underwater transducers in free field conditions below 1000 Hz with results on an acoustical recorder
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. - : Acoustical Society of America (ASA). - 0001-4966 .- 1520-8524. ; 152:6, s. 3606-3615
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A calibration technique with potential for low frequencies and sizeable systems of underwater transducers is being developed at the Swedish Defence Research Agency. The technique is based on the three-transducer spherical wave reciprocity method for use in an ice-covered lake with a depth of 220 m in the Swedish arctic zone. The calibration is performed at a depth of approximately 100 m with inter-transducer separations of 50 m, 86.6 m, and 100 m, allowing for frequencies down to 59 Hz using time-gated tone burst signals. In this paper, the calibration location, system, and technique are introduced, and the calibration results of an acoustical recorder in the range of 59 Hz-1 kHz are presented. The sensitivity is varying with frequency around -148 dB re 1 V/mu Pa, and the uncertainty budget is discussed.

  • Measuring 'self' : preliminary validation of a short form of the Self Experiences Questionnaire in people with chronic pain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BRITISH JOURNAL OF PAIN. - : Sage Publications. - 2049-4637 .- 2049-4645. ; 15:4, s. 474-485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: People with chronic pain often struggle with their sense of self and this can adversely impact their functioning and well-being. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy particularly includes a process related to this struggle with self. A measure for this process, the Self Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ), was previously developed in people with chronic pain.Purpose: The aim of the current study was to validate a shorter version of the SEQ in people with chronic pain to reduce respondent burden and facilitate further research. Methods: Data from 477 participants attending an interdisciplinary pain management programme were included. Participants completed measures of treatment processes (self-as-context, pain acceptance, cognitive fusion and committed action) and outcomes (pain, pain interference, work and social adjustment and depression) at baseline and post-treatment. Confirmatory factor analysis was used for item reduction. Correlations between scores from the shorter SEQ and other process and outcome variables were calculated to examine validity. Change scores of the shorter SEQ and their correlations with changes in outcome variables were examined for responsiveness. Results: An eight-item SEQ (SEQ-8) scale including two factors, namely Self-as-Distinction and Selfas-Observer, emerged, demonstrating good reliability (Cronbach's alpha =.87-.90) and validity (vertical bar r vertical bar =.14-.52). Scores from SEQ-8 significantly improved after the treatment (d=.15-21), and these improvements correlated with improvements in most outcomes. Conclusions: The SEQ-8 appears to be a reliable and valid measure of self. This shorter format may facilitate intensive longitudinal investigation into sense of self and functioning and well-being.

  • TRPA1-FGFR2 binding event is a regulatory oncogenic driver modulated by miRNA-142-3p
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent evidence suggests that the ion channel TRPA1 is implicated in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), where its role and mechanism of action remain unknown. We have previously established that the membrane receptor FGFR2 drives LUAD progression through aberrant protein-protein interactions mediated via its C-terminal proline-rich motif. Here we report that the N-terminal ankyrin repeats of TRPA1 directly bind to the C-terminal proline-rich motif of FGFR2 inducing the constitutive activation of the receptor, thereby prompting LUAD progression and metastasis. Furthermore, we show that upon metastasis to the brain, TRPA1 gets depleted, an effect triggered by the transfer of TRPA1-targeting exosomal microRNA (miRNA-142-3p) from brain astrocytes to cancer cells. This downregulation, in turn, inhibits TRPA1-mediated activation of FGFR2, hindering the metastatic process. Our study reveals a direct binding event and characterizes the role of TRPA1 ankyrin repeats in regulating FGFR2-driven oncogenic process; a mechanism that is hindered by miRNA-142-3p.

  • Legal variation and capital structure : Comparing listed and non-listed companies
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Law and Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0929-1261 .- 1572-9990. ; 40:3, s. 511-543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We exploit the natural institutional variation in Western Europe to examine leverage (and debt maturity) for listed and non-listed companies (NLCs). We find that the legal efficiency measure (Djankov et al. 2008) is more closely related to the amount of leverage and debt maturity than is the creditor rights score of La Porta et al. (Law and Finance, NBER working paper 5661, 1996; J Financ 52:1131–1151, 1997). One component of the standard measure of creditor rights was consistently and positively associated with leverage: whether secured creditors are paid first in the event of distress. Firms located in French and German legal family countries have less leverage than companies in common law setting, but Scandinavian firms have more. Asset specificity has a negative impact on leverage, but a positive impact on debt maturity. Finally, using a matched sample of otherwise similar privately held companies, we find that listed firms have less debt, consistent with a corporate governance interpretation that presumably more dispersed publicly traded firms are more likely to avoid the disciplining device of leverage. The findings are robust to use of industry-level fixed effects.

  • Ownership and Performance in Europe
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Review of Business. - 0034-6454. ; 33:2, s. 39-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article reflects on a cross-country study to explore the relationship between ownership concentration and corporate performance and shareholder's legal investor protection for both private and public firms in five European economies including Ireland, Austria, and Austria. It mentions that regression analysis of almost 37,000 firms from the period 1996 - 2005 was conducted and the study found that legal investor protection was least in Ukraine.

  • Legal Rights Matter : Evidence from Panel Data on Creditor Protection and Debt
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Finance Review. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1569-3767. ; 9, s. 303-336, s. 303-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using panel data derived from recent financial statements, we examine the relationship between changing creditor protection and leverage (and debt maturity) in a number of emerging market countries located in Central and Eastern Europe. We examine unlisted firms, which are more likely than listed companies to face credit constraints. Our main hypothesis is whether unlisted firms change their leverage and debt maturity as creditor rights increase. We confirm this to be the case at both the country- and firm-level; our findings are robust to alternative econometric specifications and inclusion of countrylevel and firm-level controls. We also find that legal origin is related to the level of debt and its maturity.

  • På många stolar : Axel Nyström som arkitekt och kulturbyråkrat
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the dissertation is to examine the work of Axel Nyström (1792–1868), describing the distinctive features of his architecture and discussing his significance for Swedish architecture during the nineteenth century, as a teacher, theorist, administrator, and practitioner.Three main questions serve as a basis for the study: 1. What was Axel Nyström’s role as administrator and teacher? 2. How did he perceive architecture? 3. To what extent and in what way did his buildings influence and shape Swedish architecture?Axel Nyström was working in a time of change, as regards both architecture and society as a whole. Classicism was no longer the given model to emulate. Industrialism was gradually growing and a new bourgeois class was emerging. This led to new types of buildings and new demands for academically trained architects who could give a suitable architectural form to the public spaces of the new bourgeoisie. The quest for a contemporary style increasingly began to occupy architects and writers on the continent – a debate in which Nyström participated and which he transferred to Sweden. He was involved in architectural education, which he radically reformed, and he strove to bring about a redefinition of the concept of architect. Nyström played an important part in the emergence of a new role for the architect: from the eighteenth-century architect who had been a pupil of a master or had received his training in the military, to a professional with an academic education – thus pointing the way forward to the professional category that today’s architects constitute. Many of Nyström’s ideas can also be said to have been ahead of their time. A great deal of what would become a concrete reality in the second half of the nineteenth century was already expressed by him in the 1840s, for example as regards the use of genuine materials and an eclectic attitude to historical forms of architecture.

  • Arkitektoniska visioner under statligt förmynderskap : En studie av Överintendentsämbetets verksamhet och organisation 1818-1917
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aim of this dissertation has been to paint a more detailed picture of the organization and practice of the Board of Public Buildings during the period 1818-1917, mainly through a close-up study of four consecutive architects working for the Board. Besides analysing the practice followed by the authority and the social structure of which it was a part, the dissertation also deals with aspects of its interaction with executive regional and local clients, and the effect this mutual collaboration had on the final architectural expression. The activities of the Board are in this study interpreted as a reflection of what has always characterized Swedish administration historically, namely, strong central control with a requirement for all-round official inquires and public transparency, guaranteeing the citizens’ demands for codetermination. The study clearly shows that this typically mild exercise of power, which has characterized Swedish administration, also embraced the country’s public architecture. The significance that can be ascribed to the Board as regards the configuration of public architecture was immense. The stylistic ideals initiated by the Board had an enormous impact because of the large number of cases handled, combined with their geographical spread. In this lay the strength of the authority, but its weakness as well: by virtue of its superior position, the architects of the Board could easily point out the direction to be taken by style, but subsequently, when the stylistic ideals had spread downwards to the broad masses, it was difficult to change course. It may thus be noted that the Board as an authority was a leading body and a source of stimulus when riding the crests of the waves, but in the troughs it lagged behind and was even static. Never the less the significance of the Board of Public Works and Buildings for the development of building in Sweden during the nineteenth century can scarcely be overestimated.

  • Transcriptome for photobiological hydrogen production induced by sulfur deprivation in the green algaChlamydomonas reinhardtii
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Eukaryot Cell. ; 7:11, s. 1965-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photobiological hydrogen production using microalgae is being developed into a promising clean fuel stream for the future. In this study, microarray analyses were used to obtain global expression profiles of mRNA abundance in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii at different time points before the onset and during the course of sulfur-depleted hydrogen production. These studies were followed by real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR and protein analyses. The present work provides new insights into photosynthesis, sulfur acquisition strategies, and carbon metabolism-related gene expression during sulfur-induced hydrogen production. A general trend toward repression of transcripts encoding photosynthetic genes was observed. In contrast to all other LHCBM genes, the abundance of the LHCBM9 transcript (encoding a major light-harvesting polypeptide) and its protein was strongly elevated throughout the experiment. This suggests a major remodeling of the photosystem II light-harvesting complex as well as an important function of LHCBM9 under sulfur starvation and photobiological hydrogen production. This paper presents the first global transcriptional analysis of C. reinhardtii before, during, and after photobiological hydrogen production under sulfur deprivation.
