  • Future industrial networks in process automation : Goals, challenges, and future directions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-3417. ; 11:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are many initiatives and technologies working towards implementing factories of the future. One consensus is that the classical hierarchical automation system design needs to be flattened while supporting the functionality of both Operation Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) within the same network infrastructure. To achieve the goal of IT/OT convergence in process automation, an evolutionary transition is preferred. Challenges are foreseen during the transition, mainly caused by the traditional automation architecture, and the main challenge is to identify the gap between the current and future network architectures. To address the challenges, in this paper, we describe one desired future scenario for process automation and carry out traffic measurements from a pulp and paper mill. The measured traffic is further analyzed, which reveals representative traffic characteristics in the process automation. Finally, the key challenges and future directions towards a system architecture for factories of the future are presented. © 2021 by the authors.

  • Toward Wireless Control in Industrial Process Automation : A Case Study at a Paper Mill
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Control Systems. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1066-033X .- 1941-000X. ; 39:5, s. 36-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless sensors and networks are used only occasionally in current control loops in the process industry. With rapid developments in embedded and highperformance computing, wireless communication, and cloud technology, drastic changes in the architecture and operation of industrial automation systems seem more likely than ever. These changes are driven by ever-growing demands on production quality and flexibility. However, as discussed in "Summary," there are several research obstacles to overcome. The radio communication environment in the process industry is often troublesome, as the environment is frequently cluttered with large metal objects, moving machines and vehicles, and processes emitting radio disturbances [1], [2]. The successful deployment of a wireless control system in such an environment requires careful design of communication links and network protocols as well as robust and reconfigurable control algorithms.

  • Enabling dynamic and lightweigth management of distributed Bluetooth low energy devices
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications. - : IEEE. - 9781538636510 - 9781538636527 ; , s. 615-619
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a wireless communication technology for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Although recent versions of BLE embrace the 6LoWPAN standard for IPv6 low-power device communication, this is often not the best choice for constrained-node networks due to downsides such as increased memory and computation overhead, heavier network stack, increased power consumption, backward incompatibility, etc. A crucial requirement for successful IoT solutions is an efficient strategy for monitoring and control of highly distributed sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose a dynamic and lightweight model for management of distributed constrained BLE nodes based on OMA Lightweight M2M (LWM2M) protocol. To this end, we have designed a new intermediate component, a BLELWM2M gateway (GW), which has dual roles: a BLE master that monitors and controls the BLE devices, and a LWM2M client that acts on behalf of an operator's LWM2M management server. The BLE-LWM2M GW has interfaces to dynamically manage connected BLE devices as LWM2M objects, called ObjectTwins, in runtime without a need for user configuration. All services that BLE devices provide are mapped to the ObjectTwins in the gateway, which are exposed to the LWM2M server. Hence, this model enables a LWM2M server to manage distributed BLE devices by interacting with the BLE-LWM2M GW using the LWM2M standard methods, and the constrained devices can still use a native Bluetooth communication protocol. To verify its feasibility, a prototype of a mobile healthcare system has been implemented in a testbed.

  • A javascript web framework for rapid development of applications in IoT systems for eHealth
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE 20th International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services, Healthcom 2018. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781538642948
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is currently the dominating wireless network solution for eHealth and sports. However, most BLE sensors require dedicated applications with limited development capabilities. This paper presents a method for rapid development of applications in distributed BLE IoT systems for eHealth and sports. The method is implemented as a JavaScript web framework based on HTML5 canvas, WebSocket and Web Bluetooth APIs. This paper demonstrates how the framework can be applied to develop an application for monitoring physical activity and heart rate. The framework enables software and service operators to iteratively create, tune and deploy filter algorithms in distributed BLE IoT systems, without rebooting nodes or restarting programs using dynamic software updating.

  • Distributed Performance Management of Internet of Things as a Service for Caregivers
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 19TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON E-HEALTH NETWORKING, APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES (HEALTHCOM). - : IEEE. - 9781509067046 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a multi-layer distributed performance management model for Internet of Things (IoT) as a service for caregivers. Performance monitoring and control of IoT devices and services are vital functions for e-health systems. Cloud-based IoT systems with centralized data centers further underline the need for distributed management. The main contribution of this paper is a model and prototype implementation that combines low-complexity policy-based and conventional network management with cloud computing paradigm, lightweight IoT protocols, and their data models. A case study on monitoring of heart activity demonstrates interworking between OMA Lightweight M2M protocol, Bluetooth low energy GATT services, and Azure IoT hub cloud platform to enable distributed policy-based performance management.

  • Immigrants in the Old-Age Pension System : The Case of Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International migration (Geneva. Print). - : Wiley. - 0020-7985 .- 1468-2435. ; 54:5, s. 5-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article investigates incomes and especially state pensions 2008 among elderly immigrants who arrived in Sweden before 1970. At age 70 and above, the level of state old-age pension for immigrant men was nearly the same and for immigrant women somewhat higher than for natives with similar characteristics. At age 65-66 the state pension was lower for immigrants than for their native counterparts. The differences in pensions for immigrants of different ages are probably due to changed rules in the Swedish state old-age pension system from 2003. The new rules have hit different age groups in different ways. The gaps are partially levelled out when other incomes are included. The extent to which levelling occurs varies greatly between different immigrant groups. For immigrants who have arrived during the last decades, the future state old-age pension outcomes are expected to be worse.

  • Proposal and experimental evaluation of fall detection solution based on wearable and depth data fusion
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ICT Innovations 2015. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319257334 - 9783319257310 ; , s. 99-108
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fall injury issues represent a serious problem for elderly in our society. These people want to live in their home as long as possible and technology can improve their security and independence. In this work we study the joint use of a camera based system and wearable devices, in the so called data fusion approach, to design a fall detection solution. The synchronization issues between the heterogeneous data provided by the devices are properly treated, and three different fall detection algorithms are implemented. Experimental results are also provided, to compare the proposed solutions.
