  • Fanon in drag : Decoloniality in sociolinguistics?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sociolinguistics. - : Wiley. - 1360-6441 .- 1467-9841. ; 21:3, s. 371-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In focus in this paper is the genre of drag, and the uses to which it is put by its proponents in subverting conventional and repressive (Western) models of gender, sexuality and race. We raise the question of to what extent performances of drag, while arguably disrupting gender stereotypes, nevertheless continue to reproduce colonialities of race and sexuality. Framing an analysis of a drag king performance in a sociolinguistics of subjectification inspired by the work of Frantz Fanon, we offer an account that recognizes how, rather than subverting or challenging conventional images of gender, the performance is one part of a complex circulation of textual and corporeal semiotics that enregisters racialized categories of male and female cut to the cloth of coloniality/modernity. On the other hand, the analysis also reveals that there are moments of interruption and slippage in the reproduction of colonial constructs of race, gender and sexuality that may offer more complex and multifarious understandings of what may comprise the exercises of decoloniality. We conclude with a discussion of what a decolonial Fanonian approach to subjectification might offer sociolinguistics.

  • Fanon in Scandinavia : Words and Action
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Translating Frantz Fanon Across Continents and Languages. - London : Routledge. - 1138658731 ; , s. 222-248
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter maps the translations and receptions of Les Damnés de la terre and excerpts of Pour une révolution africaine in Scandinavia in the 1960s and 1970s. Drawing from the theoretical perspective of histoire croisée together with textual analysis, the objective is to understand how translation may operate in a “peripheral translation zone”. Les Damnés de la terre appeared in Swedish the year after its publication in France, to be re-translated by an explicitly Marxist translator and re-published by another more established publishing house in 1969, two years after the Danish and Norwegian translations. Looking at articles, publishing archives and interviews, the first part of the chapter seeks to explore the channels through which Fanon’s ideas were spread in Scandinavia, establishing in which contexts and to whom Fanon was important. Taking this mapping as its point of departure, the second part presents a textual analysis of the translations, focusing in particular on the rendering of Marxist vocabulary, and combining this textual analysis with an analysis of articles on Fanon in order to trace the impact of Fanon’s works on Scandinavian discourses around decolonization, racism and class-struggles. The final part explores the connections between the reception of Fanon’s works and anti-colonial and anti-racist struggles, which were particularly poignant in Sweden at the time. It is my contention that Fanon played a crucial part in the Leftist movements, in that he provided intellectuals, writers and artists with both a vocabulary and a vision to engage actively in their anti-colonial struggles.

  • Decolonizing subjectivity through Fanon and Deleuze?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Presentation at Critical Legal Conference, Warwick 1-3 September 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • On 14th of March 2017 the European Court of Justice (ECJ) decided that an employer could dismiss an employee for wearing an Islamic headscarf, provided that the company had a written policy of political, philosophical and religious neutrality, and provided that the means of achieving that aim were appropriate and necessary. Put in the context of a recent development in Europe, and also together with other court decisions (for example the ECoHR case S.A.S. v. France), this marks a tendency towards a shift away from legal protection of religious and cultural minorities to protection of majorities and societal centers instead. So, this is where we stand… the majoritarian is the catastrophe. The question is then, how do we get out of the catastrophe? This paper explores the possibility of looking within in order to get out. Avoiding the liberal notion of ‘tolerance’ and ‘broadmindedness’, by which minorities are reached from without, and thereby acted upon, this paper instead suggests a change that starts from within. By reading Fanon’s notion of the non-subject person together with Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of becoming-minor, this paper will explore potentials in legal theory for decolonization of thought and subjectivity.

  • Entangled Memories of Violence : Jean Améry and Frantz Fanon
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Memory Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 1750-6980 .- 1750-6999. ; 14:1, s. 58-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I discuss the entangled memories of the Holocaust and the anticolonial struggles in Western Europe in the 1960s by relating the writings of Jean Améry and Frantz Fanon. My aim is to show how Améry’s retrospective narrative of his lived experience in the Nazi camp was formed by his reading of Fanon’s experiences of colonialism, and how Fanon’s narrative of the colonial trauma was transposed and translated into Améry’s public testimony as a Holocaust survivor. The article argues that Améry’s individual memories found a certain mediated cultural form and narrative frame in the contemporaneous situation of decolonisation. The multilayered weave of fascist and colonial violence constituting Améry’s testimony highlights questions of memory’s multidirectionality and casts new light on how cultural memorial forms are shaped and shared.

  • Fanon Revisited: Race, Gender and Coloniality vis-a-vis skin color
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Melanin Millenium. - Dordrecht Netherlands : Springer. - 9789400746084 ; , s. 169-181
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Under colonialism, the mirror of the black-white binary has been shattered by white colonials consorting with black and indigenous women. By privileging lighter-skinned mixed-race groups, colonialists established a hierarchy that linked skin colour to economic and social class. Therefore, we argue that to understand the texts of Frantz Fanon and Mayotte Capécia requires analytical tools that resist seeing the world in black or white. Our reading of Fanon seeks to broaden the scope of analysis of these texts by looking at them as works standing at the crossroads where issues of race, colour, gender, class, and power converge. Blaming women absolves men from the painful reality that they are also partners in this construction. As two black women, we have been fascinated by the depth of Fanon’s understanding of the mechanisms and ideology of colonial oppression. However, the way Fanon deals with the desire of the black man to be whitened by his association to a white woman is very different from a reverse situation between a black woman and a white man. Both seek their redemption by the association to whiteness—lightness.

  • Ingår i: Karib - Nordic Journal for Caribbean Studies. - Oslo : Novus Forlag. - 1894-8421 .- 2387-6743. ; 2, s. 128-137

    • Fanon seems to have played an exceptional role in Scandinavia, and especially in Sweden. Last year's appearance of Göran Olson's documentary film Concerning Violence. Nine Scenes from the Anti-Imperialistic Self Defense, based on the first chapter of Les Damnés de la terre only goes to show that he is still highly relevant. This brief essay is a benning to map the presence of Fanon in Sweden in order to understand how and why he has been and still is a prevailing reference for academics, intellectuals and artists in the far North. Studying Fanon's presence involves various subjects and disciplines since it raises questions of how the Left has evolved, of how certain concepts are transposed from one language to another, from one context to another reality, depending on factors such as who introduced Fanon, through which channels and to what purpose. This is an essayistic pilot-study that will offer the reader a basic outline and a description of a phenomenon in what we may call a 'periphereal translation zone', which may contribute to decentering translation studies, and allow us to estimate the tremendous impact of Fanon in this region.
