  • Diplomacy as a means of cultural transfer in early modern times : The Swedish evidence
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 31:2, s. 144-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper offers an introduction to the following papers, which represent the results Of a round table at the Nordiska Historikermote 2004 in Stockholm. It discusses the renewed interest in the study of diplomacy and international politics. This revival during the past few decades is sometimes not more than a reinvention of the old diplomatic history. However, it is also influenced by the history of ideas, as elaborated by Anglo-American historians, and modern cultural sociology. The history of diplomacy seen from the perspective of cultural transfer offers new insights into early modem diplomacy based on a new reading of well-known material.

  • Das Geschäft mit Nachrichten : Ein barocker Markt für soziale Ressourcen
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Jahrbuch für Kommunikationsgeschichte. - 1438-4485. ; 20, s. 71-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The following essay examines current research on the history of communications in the so-called early modern era, which still reiterate a Whig approach to media history. Based on a definition of news and its social functions, a different understanding of the contemporary news market is proposed. This market can not be unterstood properly on the basis of notions of a print-based public sphere or media systems. News was and is an investment in social relationships that resulted in forms of participation. They are also a means of participation in contemporaneity, which was part of the lifestyle of functional elites. The understanding of the news market in the seventeenth century outlined here not only questions the periodization of early modern times and related ideas about the so-called modernity, especially within the field of the history of communication. It also offers a different understanding of the social functions of news with repercussions for the contemporary news market.

  • Degrees of Publicity : Handwritten Newspapers in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: LIR.journal. - Göteborg. - 2001-2489. ; 1:1, s. 67-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • My paper concerns the handwritten newspaper in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The genre appeared in late sixteenth century as part of a growing public news market, which from the early seventeenth century onwards expanded rapidly with the introduction of the printed newspapers. The latter in parts replaced the handwritten one. However, at about 1700 the handwritten newspaper is still there, fulfilling specific functions alongside its printed twin. The question must therefore be what these functions were and why costumers were willing to pay for a medium that was much more expensive, although subject to the governments’ censorship in the same way as printed newspapers. The paper argues for different degrees of publicity, which shaped the public news market as well as private news correspondences. In consequence, there were different news genres, tailor-made for a general public or more specific groups of recipients. This argument relies on contemporary tracts on the printed newspaper as well as Swedish and Northern German collections of handwritten newspapers.
