  • Organizational foundations and closures in a regulated environment : Swedish commercial banks 1831-1990
  • 1991
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study analyzes the foundations and closures of the total population of Swedish commercial banks in 1831-1990 using both semi-parametric and parametric event-history methods. With reference to the comparatively rigid control of entries and exits in banking, five hypotheses are formulated: (1) acquisitions constitute the principal reason for closure in banking; (2) the early years are less hazardous for banks than for members of other industries; (3) the survival patterns of banks are related to the freedom of banking operations; (4) the survival rates of banks are positively related to the general economic activity at the time of foundation; and (5) the survival rates of banks are negatively related to the degree to which customer relationships already exist. The findings support the first, second, third and fifth hypotheses; some evidence also favours the fourth hypothesis

  • Organisatoriska aspekter på bankers riskhantering
  • 1991
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the recent problems within the bankingindustry by means of modern organization theory. The second section of thepaper discusses the development of this theory through a successive challenge ofthe work of the classical authors. Three tendencies are particularly stressed: thelimitations of individuals, the complexity of human interaction and theimportance of the organizational context. A subsequent section applies thisreasoning to the banking firm whereby different organizational explanations tothe recent problems are discussed. This analysis points to an increased need inbank management to consider the human aspects and the special characteristicsof the banking firm.

  • Phileas Fogg's followers : knowledge elites in the global financial service industry
  • 1988
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Traditionally the financial service industry has been characterised byhigh mobility barriers due to extensive Government surveillance. Similarbarriers have also been existing for its employees, who havetended to be recruited among cautious candidates. Both these circumstanceshave undergone changes as the working conditions of theindustry have altered. An important event in this context is the introductionof modern computer and communication technology. It hasto some extent created new barriers to mobility by the requirementsfor extensive investments, but primarily it has reinforced tendenciesof deregulation thereby increasing competition This in turn has impliedthe creation of new instruments and the need for a new type ofemployees with another time and risk orientation than earlier. Theyconstitute a new knowledge elite, the introduction of which may beexpected to create tensions in traditional financial institutions.
