  • Mångkulturalism och svensk folkhögskola : Studie av en möjlig mötesarena
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to analyze the Swedish folk high school as a possible arena for multicultural encounters. This is done at two levels. One is the so called institutional level, where an attempt is made to identify the underlying set of values of the folk high school in a multicultural perspective. The other is the organizational level, which is the local folk high school as a possible arena of encounters. These two levels can also be termed arenas of formulation and realization. The major part is the field study at four schools. An attempt has been made to find out to what extent the schools live up to the criteria for arenas of multicultural encounter thatare identified from official governmental documents and related research. In other words, to relate the arenas of formulation and realization to one another. These criteria imply that the task of the folk high school in this respect is to develop and strengthen ethnorelative attitudes among its students and to equip them for communicative actions. The field study of the arena of realization, the local folk high school, has shed light onsome aspects of the multicultural encounter. There are indications that the folk highschool has the potentiality for living up to the above-mentioned criteria. However, thispotentiality is not being used in full, neither by governmental agencies nor by the actorson the local arena.

  • Från fritidens pedagog till hjälplärare : Fritidspedagogers och lärares yrkesrelation i integrerade arbetslag
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The restructuring of the Swedish comprehensive school has brought child care and schoolcloser together. During the 90's leisure time centres (LTCs) were physically integrated into school buildings. Therefore, today teachers and recreation instructors (RIs) often worktogether in teams. The work team is officially looked upon as an agent for educationalchange in schools. The official rhetoric on integration exerts a normative pressure onpedagogues to collaborate during the school day, and the educational aim is to merge "thebest of" from each educational culture. However, the teacher position in the educationalinstitution dominates the RI position. An unequal occupational relation has thus beenestablished, which makes collaboration in interprofessional work teams harder. The aim of the study was to analyse how RIs' occupational function was constitutedthrough oral interaction during planning sessions in interprofessional work teams. One workteam in two schools in the same municipality was chosen, and followed during one term. Thestudy had a social constructionist/constructivist perspective. Data was constructed as episodes, and the notion of strategic context derived from Anthony Giddens theory of structuration was used in data analysis. Results showed that in spite of great differences between the two schools in terms oforganisation and local ethos, the strategic context forced both work teams to constitute theRIs ocupational function during collaboration time as teachers' assistants. RIs acting inaccordance with a school educational logic were receiving positive sanctions. RIs had difficulties grounding their actions in a LTC educational logic. The structural constraints ofthe strategic context reproduced the unequal relation position-wise as an unequal occupational relation in interaction. It was concluded that in the future RIs wishing to keep or develop an occupational identity as the pedagogue of recreation, could best do so outside of school and outside of interprofessional collaboration with teachers.

  • Perspektiv på barnuppfostran : En studie av föräldraskap i kristen miljö : [a study of parenting in a Christian context]
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation deals with the raising of children within the framework of the family andfrom the perspective of the parents. The study treats the parents' intentions and understanding of themselves as parents and their thoughts regarding parenting. An investigation wascarried out among parents from Christian contexts characterized as nonconformist and low-church. The purpose was to describe these parents' perspectives, strategies, and practical common sense in childrearing and to understand these aspects in the light of the socio-cultural context and the religious commitment.A questionnaire survey was carried out in a larger group (n=114) and semi-structured,open interviews with eighteen parental couples, selected from the larger group under study. The parents put particularly strong emphasis on the family and family child care in order to create emotional security for the children and to convey Christian faith and traditional ethical values such as reliability and honesty. As a strategy they also stressed church-related activities. In achieving these goals the parents did not want the children to feel estranged from the surrounding secular society. Therefore most of the parents put less emphasis on transmitting an old sub-cultural nonconformist life style. The preferred parenting-strategy seemed to be a guiding and interactive authoritative style with a concomitant idea of Christian parenting as characterized by an understanding-accepting behavior toward the children, with a strong emphasis on the concept of forgiveness-a phenomenon that grew with increased religious commitment. The parents rejected oldfashioned authoritarian child-rearing and wanted to develop a relationship based on confidence and openness. Variations were found in parental patterns related to the family environments, education and religious commitment.

  • Lärares pedagogiska handlingar : En studie av lärares uppfattningarav att vara pedagogisk i klassrumsarbetet
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study concerns teachers' conceptions of what it means to be pedagogical. The work has itsstarting point in van Manen's work concerning pedagogical tact. By using this concept vanManen tries to describe teachers' tacit and intuitive skills to decide what to do or what not to do in any given situation. This study is based largely on the assumption that van Marten's concept is too narrow and perhaps invalid in certain contexts. The study was conducted as a phenomenographical study with the help of video-stimulated-recall-interviews. Four aspects of the phenomena were identified::The pedagogical relation: this aspect is constructed by four qualitatively different conceptions: parent-like, friend-like, manager-like and partner-like.The pedagogical control: this aspect is also constructed using four conceptions: as a question of finesse, negotiation, organisation and as a question of rules of the game. The pedagogical teaching: here the aspect consists of three conceptions: to transmit know-ledge, to make children work and to help children learn. The pedagogical ways of coping with dilemmas: the last aspect is made up by three conceptions: situational, principle and methodological. Different types of dilemmas occur according to whether the classroom is organised as collective teaching or individualised teaching. The results show that the phenomena being pedagogical can only be partly understood throughthe concept pedagogical tact. Further, the understanding of the phenomenon seems to be dependent on how the classroom is organised. Being pedagogical can therefore be seen as complex and as contextually dependent. It is influenced not only by cultural and historical factors but also on the type of activities undertaken.

  • Lärare tar gestalt : En hermeneutisk studie av texter om lärarblivande på distans
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Texts, including teachers' responses to students' practice journals, in which a group of trainee teachers and their lecturers reveal their experiences of a distance education programme for primary school teacher training are interpreted in this thesis from within a hermeneutical tradition. Attention is focused first on how students through their texts conceptualise themselves as becoming teachers and also on how their teachers' responses to the students' texts contribute to this process. A second focus is on how distance education, normally targeting mature students, begins to be understood by students and becomes part of their lives. The possible research value of texts passing between students and teachers is also discussed. Finally, the possibility of developing a didactics based on existential hermeneutics is described.Completed interpretations show how students in the main focus on the brighter sides of the programme, of their teachers and of their co-students and how their lecturers also choose to focus on their students' positive qualities, giving praise rather than engaging in a critical dialogue which might challenge their thinking about the job of teaching and about themselves as teachers. Not being required to leave their own locality in order to study and thereby not disrupting their families either socially or economically is the main benefit of distance education for these mature students. The teachers' praise of students has been interpreted as indicating that current conceptualisations of teacher training, teachers, schooling and school children are seldom challenged as an integral part of teacher training. Reciprocally, student teachers' positive portrayal of the teaching profession, and particularly of their lecturers, can be interpreted as reducing the likelihood of teaching lecturers questioning their own conceptions of themselves, their students or teacher training in general. These positions may lead in turn to the detriment of the critical task of all teacher training, namely, to foster critically aware teachers, allowing teaching lecturers and their students to challenge their taken-for-granted truths about themselves and the profession of teaching.

  • Lärare och skolans omstrukturering : Ett möte mellan utbildningspolitiska intentioner och grundskollärares perspektiv på förändringar i den svenska skolan : [an encounter between political intentions and compulsory school teachers' perspective of school changes in Sweden]
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The endeavour of this dissertation is to search for an understanding of the restructuring withinthe Swedish Comprehensive School System during the 80's and 90's. To that purpose the authorhas described the political intentions of the current restructuring (in terms of decentralization, freedom of choice and privatization) and the teachers' conceptions of the school changes. Bybringing the intentions face to face with the conceptions, expressed by the teachers, the restructuring has been characterized by four concepts: room for acting, lack of confidence, subordination and alliance.A picture appeared of a group of teachers, within the compulsory school, losing control of theschool activities. In some cases the teachers placed themselves beside the political demands. Inanother situation they have offered their professional knowledge (often without getting responsefrom superiors) in order to adapt their actions to the requests from above. The adaption sometimes also seems to occur unreserved, without consideration of the teacher's professionalism.Simultaneously the intentions and decisions of the teachers as well as the principals seem tobe influenced by the alliance making among the school actors which now has a vital importancein the school arena. The alliances could be more important in the organization of the schoolactivities than the formulation and solution of pedagogical issues. In such a context it could berelevant to ask if the teacher professionalization project, initiated by the central political level, goes astray. When the alliance making has an increasing importance to the school, it might easily deprivethe teachers of their possibility to initiate and control the school activities. In the light of thatcircumstance. it could be defensible to interpret the implications of the restructuring in terms ofproletarianization. Here, we are able to talk about a new policy context which could be characterized in terms of split, self discipline and suspiciousness.

  • Musik som livsstil och vetenskap : Studerandes möte med universitetsämnet musikvetenskap
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the present study is to elucidate young people's encounter with a subject within the field of art, music and drama - here musicology. Central issues touch upon recruitment, study motives, the students' conception of the subject, education, and a retrospective view on how the knowledge is evaluated and used. Data has been collected in five part-studies throughout 3.5 years (not longitudinal) using 338 questionnaires and 21 interviews with active and ex-active students of the Musicology Department at Uppsala University. The students' perspective has been established as the sole point of vantage and the research process adheres to inductive logic. The picture of the results as a whole is analysed in three thematic sections: the interplay of internal and external conditions, i.e. the contrast between, on the one hand, the external conditions obtaining to music in youth cultures of the surrounding society, and, on the other hand, the limited, exclusive and scientific representation within the university. The second theme captures the dualism between the artistic/practical direction of studies and the theoretical/scientific direction that is illustrated in the results in various ways. The key-words characterising the third thematic section are: learning, education and public interest. The study generates knowledge relevant at departmental/subject level as well as at a general university college level: with regard to, inter alia, the planning and composition of courses, the department's communication with the surrounding society, the perceived identity of the discipline, issues relating to small and large educational units respectively and the importance of environmental factors to different categories of students. Further, the study has emphasised the importance of the students' perspective and the combination of different research strategies, and the so-called third assignment of the university college, and the public interest of studies in the field of arts and humanities.
