  • Reversible Structural Isomerization of Nature's Water Oxidation Catalyst Prior to O-O Bond Formation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 144:26, s. 11736-11747
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photosynthetic water oxidation is catalyzed by a manganese-calcium oxide cluster, which experiences five "S-states" during a light-driven reaction cycle. The unique "distorted chair"-like geometry of the Mn4CaO5(6)cluster shows structural flexibility that has been frequently proposed to involve "open" and "closed"-cubane forms from the S1 to S3states. The isomers are interconvertible in the S1 and S2states, while in the S3state, the open-cubane structure is observed to dominate inThermosynechococcus elongatus (cyanobacteria) samples. In this work, using density functional theory calculations, we go beyond the S3+Yzstate to the S3nYz•→ S4+Yzstep, and report for the first time that the reversible isomerism, which is suppressed in the S3+Yzstate, is fully recovered in the ensuing S3nYz•state due to the proton release from a manganese-bound water ligand. The altered coordination strength of the manganese-ligand facilitates formation of the closed-cubane form, in a dynamic equilibrium with the open-cubane form. This tautomerism immediately preceding dioxygen formation may constitute the rate limiting step for O2formation, and exert a significant influence on the water oxidation mechanism in photosystem II.

  • Steps Control the Dissociation of CO2 on Cu(100)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 140:40, s. 12974-12979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CO2 reduction reactions, which provide one route to limit the emission of this greenhouse gas, are commonly performed over Cu-based catalysts. Here, we use ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy together with density functional theory to obtain an atomistic understanding of the dissociative adsorption of CO2 on Cu(100). We find that the process is dominated by the presence of steps, which promote both a lowering of the dissociation barrier and an efficient separation between adsorbed O and CO, reducing the probability for recombination. The identification of steps as sites for efficient CO2 dissociation provides an understanding that can be used in the design of future CO2 reduction catalysts.

  • Structural Basis for Dityrosine-Mediated Inhibition of α-Synuclein Fibrillization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 144:27, s. 11949-11954
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • α-Synuclein (α-Syn) is an intrinsically disordered protein which self-assembles into highly organized β-sheet structures that accumulate in plaques in brains of Parkinson’s disease patients. Oxidative stress influences α-Syn structure and self-assembly; however, the basis for this remains unclear. Here we characterize the chemical and physical effects of mild oxidation on monomeric α-Syn and its aggregation. Using a combination of biophysical methods, small-angle X-ray scattering, and native ion mobility mass spectrometry, we find that oxidation leads to formation of intramolecular dityrosine cross-linkages and a compaction of the α-Syn monomer by a factor of √2. Oxidation-induced compaction is shown to inhibit ordered self-assembly and amyloid formation by steric hindrance, suggesting an important role of mild oxidation in preventing amyloid formation.

  • Chiral Lanthanum Metal-Organic Framework with Gated CO2 Sorption and Concerted Framework Flexibility br
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 144:19, s. 8725-8733
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A metal-organic framework (MOF)CTH-17based on lanthanum-(III) and the conformationally chiral linker 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-benzene, cpb6-: [La2(cpb)]middot1.5dmf was prepared by the solvothermal method indimethylformamide (dmf) and characterized by variable-temperature X-raypowder diffraction (VTPXRD), variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal diffrac-tion (SCXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).CTH-17is a rod-MOFwith new topologyoch. It has high-temperature stability with Sohncke spacegroupsP6122/P6522 at 90 K andP622 at 300 and 500 K, all phases characterizedwith SCXRD and at 293 K also with three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction. VTPXRD indicates a third phase appearing after620 K and stable up to 770 K. Gas sorption isotherms with N2indicate a modest surface area of 231 m2g-1forCTH-17, roughly inagreement with the crystal structure. Carbon dioxide sorption reveals a gate-opening effect ofCTH-17where the structure opens upwhen the loading of CO2reaches approximately similar to 0.45 mmol g-1or 1 molecule per unit cell. Based on the SCXRD data, this isinterpreted asflexibility based on the concerted movements of the propeller-like hexatopic cpb linkers, the movementintramolecularly transmitted by the pi-pi stacking of the cpb linkers and helped by thefluidity of the LaO6coordination sphere. Thiswas corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations yielding the chiral phase (P622) as the energy minimum and acompletely racemic phase (P6/mmm), with symmetric cpb linkers representing a saddle point in a racemization process

  • Water Ordering at Membrane Interfaces Controls Fusion Dynamics
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society. - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 133:11, s. 3812-3815
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Membrane interfaces are critical to many cellular functions, yet the vast array of molecular components involved make the fundamental physics of interaction difficult to define. Water has been shown to play an important role in the dynamics of small biological systems, for example when trapped in hydrophobic regions, but the molecular details of water have generally been thought dispensable when considering large membrane interfaces. Nevertheless, spectroscopic data indicate that water has distinct, ordered behavior near membrane surfaces. While coarse-grained simulations have achieved success recently in aiding understanding the dynamics of membrane assemblies, it is natural to ask, does the missing chemical nature of water play an important role? We have therefore performed atomic-resolution simulations of vesicle fusion to understand the role of chemical detail, particularly the molecular structure of water, in membrane fusion and at membrane interfaces more generally. These membrane interfaces present a form of hydrophilic confinement, yielding surprising, non-bulk-like water behavior.

  • Solvent-Dependent Structural Dynamics in the Ultrafast Photodissociation Reaction of Triiodide Observed with Time-Resolved X-ray Solution Scattering
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 145:29, s. 15754-15765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resolving the structural dynamics of bond breaking, bond formation, and solvation is required for a deeper understanding of solutionphase chemical reactions. In this work, we investigate the photodissociation of triiodide in four solvents using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray solution scattering following 400 nm photoexcitation. Structural analysis of the scattering data resolves the solvent-dependent structural evolution during the bond cleavage, internal rearrangements, solvent-cage escape, and bond reformation in real time. The nature and structure of the reaction intermediates during the recombination are determined, elucidating the full mechanism of photodissociation and recombination on ultrafast time scales. We resolve the structure of the precursor state for recombination as a geminate pair. Further, we determine the size of the solvent cages from the refined structures of the radical pair. The observed structural dynamics present a comprehensive picture of the solvent influence on structure and dynamics of dissociation reactions.

  • Shape Preserving Single Crystal to Amorphous to Single Crystal Polymorphic Transformation Is Possible
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 143:48, s. 20202-20206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many crystalline materials form polymorphs and undergo solid–solid transitions between different forms as a function of temperature or pressure. However, there is still a poor understanding of the mechanism of transformation. Conclusions about the transformation process are typically drawn by comparing the crystal structures before and after the conversion, but gaining detailed mechanistic knowledge is strongly impeded by the generally fast rate of these transitions. When the crystal morphology does not change, it is assumed that crystallinity is maintained throughout the process. Here we report transformation between polymorphs of ZnCl2(1,3-diethylimidazole-2-thione)2 which are sufficiently slow to allow unambiguous assignment of single crystal to single crystal transformation with shape preservation proceeding through an amorphous intermediate phase. This result fundamentally challenges the commonly accepted views of polymorphic phase transition mechanisms.

  • A Robust and Biocompatible Bismuth Ellagate MOF Synthesized Under Green Ambient Conditions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 142:39, s. 16795-16804
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first bioinspired microporous metal-organic framework (MOF) synthesized using ellagic acid, a common natural antioxidant and polyphenol building unit, is presented. Bi2O(H2O)2(C14H2O8)·nH2O (SU-101) was inspired by bismuth phenolate metallodrugs, and could be synthesized entirely from nonhazardous or edible reagents under ambient aqueous conditions, enabling simple scale-up. Reagent-grade and affordable dietary supplement-grade ellagic acid was sourced from tree bark and pomegranate hulls, respectively. Biocompatibility and colloidal stability were confirmed by in vitro assays. The material exhibits remarkable chemical stability for a bioinspired MOF (pH = 2-14, hydrothermal conditions, heated organic solvents, biological media, SO2 and H2S), attributed to the strongly chelating phenolates. A total H2S uptake of 15.95 mmol g-1 was recorded, representing one of the highest H2S capacities for a MOF, where polysulfides are formed inside the pores of the material. Phenolic phytochemicals remain largely unexplored as linkers for MOF synthesis, opening new avenues to design stable, eco-friendly, scalable, and low-cost MOFs for diverse applications, including drug delivery.

  • Electroactive Covalent Organic Framework Enabling Photostimulus-Responsive Devices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 144:35, s. 16093-16100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) feature graphene-type 2D layered sheets but with a tunable structure, electroactivity, and high porosity. If these traits are well-combined, then 2D COFs can be applied in electronics to realize functions with a high degree of complexity. Here, a highly crystalline electroactive COF, BDFamide-Tp, was designed and synthesized. It shows regularly distributed pores with a width of 1.35 nm. Smooth and successive films of such a COF were fabricated and found to be able to increase the conductivity of an organic semiconductor by 103 by interfacial doping. Upon encapsulation of a photoswitchable molecule (spiropyran) into the voids of the COF layer, the resulted devices respond differently to light of different wavelengths. Specifically, the current output ratio after UV vs Vis illumination reaches 100 times, thus effectively creating on and off states. The respective positive and negative feedbacks are memorized by the device and can be reprogrammed by UV/Vis illumination. The reversible photostimulus responsivity and reliable memory of the device are derived from the combination of electroactivity and porosity of the 2D COF. This work shows the capability of 2D COFs in higher-level electronic functions and extends their possible applications in information storage. © 2022 The Authors. • Annihilation Versus Excimer Formation by the Triplet Pair in Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Photon Upconversion
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 141:24, s. 9578-9584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The triplet pair is the key functional unit in triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion. The same molecular properties that stabilize the triplet pair also allow dimers to form on the singlet energy surface, creating an unwanted energy relaxation pathway. Here we show that excimer formation most likely is a consequence of a triplet dimer formed before the annihilation event. Polarity-dependent studies were performed to elucidate how to promote wanted emission pathways over excimer formation. Furthermore, we show that the yield of triplet-triplet annihilation is increased in higher-viscosity solvents. The results will bring new insights in how to increase the upconversion efficiency and how to avoid energy-loss channels.
