  • Modeling near-edge fine structure x-ray spectra of the manganese catalytic site for water oxidation in photosystem II
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 134:41, s. 17157-17167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Mn 1s near-edge absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) has been computed by means of transition-state gradient-corrected density functional theory (DFT) on four Mn 4Ca clusters modeling the successive S 0 to S 3 steps of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in photosystem II (PSII). The model clusters were obtained from a previous theoretical study where they were determined by energy minimization. They are composed of Mn(III) and Mn(IV) atoms, progressing from Mn(III) 3Mn(IV) for S 0 to Mn(III) 2Mn(IV) 2 for S 1 to Mn(III)Mn(IV) 3 for S 2 to Mn(IV) 4 for S 3, implying an Mn-centered oxidation during each step of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution. The DFT simulations of the Mn 1s absorption edge reproduce the experimentally measured curves quite well. By the half-height method, the theoretical IPEs are shifted by 0.93 eV for the S 0 → S 1 transition, by 1.43 eV for the S 1 → S 2 transition, and by 0.63 eV for the S 2 → S 3 transition. The inflection point energy (IPE) shifts depend strongly on the method used to determine them, and the most interesting result is that the present clusters reproduce the shift in the S 2 → S 3 transition obtained by both the half-height and second-derivative methods, thus giving strong support to the previously suggested structures and assignments.

  • Hierarchical Chiral Expression from the Nano- to Mesoscale in Synthetic Supramolecular Helical Fibers of a Nonamphiphilic C(3)-Symmetrical pi-Functional Molecule
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 133:21, s. 8344-8353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The controlled preparation of chiral structures is a contemporary challenge for supramolecular science because of the interesting properties that can arise from the resulting materials, and here we show that a synthetic nonamphiphilic C(3) compound containing pi-functional tetrathiafulvalene units can form this kind of object. We describe the synthesis, characterization, and self-assembly properties in solution and in the solid state of the enantiopure materials. Circular dichroism (CD) measurements show optical activity resulting from the presence of twisted stacks of preferential helicity and also reveal the critical importance of fiber nucleation in their formation. Molecular mechanics (MM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations combined with CD theoretical calculations demonstrate that the (5) enantiomer provides the (M) helix, which is more stable than the (P) helix for this enantiomer. This relationship is for the first time established in this family of C(3) symmetric compounds. In addition, we show that introduction of the "wrong" enantiomer in a stack decreases the helical reversal barrier in a nonlinear manner, which very probably accounts for the absence of a "majority rules" effect. Mesoscopic chiral fibers, which show inverted helicity, i.e. (P) for the (S) enantiomer and (M) for the (R) one, have been obtained upon reprecipitation from dioxane and analyzed by optical and electronic microscopy. The fibers obtained with the racemic mixture present, as a remarkable feature, opposite homochiral domains within the same fiber, separated by points of helical reversal. Their formation can be explained through an "oscillating" crystallization mechanism. Although C(3) symmetric disk-shaped molecules containing a central benzene core substituted in the 1,3,5 positions with 3,3'-diamido-2,2'-bipyridine based wedges have shown peculiar self-assembly properties for amphiphilic derivatives, the present result shows the benefits of reducing the nonfunctional part of the molecule, in our case with short chiral isopentyl chains. The research reported herein represents an important step toward the preparation of functional mesostructures with controlled helical architectures.

  • Twisted pi-System Chromophores for All-Optical Switching
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 133:17, s. 6675-6680
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Molecular chromophores with twisted pi-electron systems have been shown to possess unprecedented values of the quadratic hyperpolarizability, beta, with very large real parts and much smaller imaginary parts. We report here an experimental and theoretical study which shows that these twisted chromophores also possess very large values of the real part of the cubic hyperpolarizability, gamma, which is responsible for nonlinear refraction. Thus, for the two-ring twisted chromophore TMC-2 at 775 nm, relatively close to one-photon resonance, n(2) extrapolated to neat substance is large and positive (1.87 x 10(-13) cm(2)/W), leading to self-focusing. Furthermore, the third-order response includes a remarkably low two-photon absorption coefficient, which means minimal nonlinear optical losses: the T factor, alpha(2)lambda/n(2), is 0.308. These characteristics are attributed to closely spaced singlet biradical and zwitterionic states and offer promise for applications in all-optical switching.

  • Expanded N-Confused Phlorin : A Platform for a Multiply Fused Polycyclic Ring System via Oxidation within the Macrocycle
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 142:40, s. 17195-17205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Novel interrupted pi-conjugated macrocycles derived from expanded porphyrinoids were synthesized, and their unique reactivity was investigated in this work. The specific porphyrin analogs, so-called phlorins and isoporphyrins, possess a meso-sp(3) methylene moiety, showing inner 3NH and 1NH pyrrolic cores, respectively, and extended near-infrared (NIR) absorption. Expanded N-confused pentapyrrolic phlorin analog 1 bears an interrupted cyclic pi-conjugated system that is featured by a distinct higher HOMO and a lower LUMO. Oxidation of 1 allowed structural transformations through the expanded isoporphyrin-like species 2. One of the representative products is a spiro-carbon-bridged multiply N-fused product 3 comprising a fused [5.6.5.7.6.5]-hexacyclic ring obtained by oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone. When magic blue was used as the oxidant, an aromatic N-confused pentaphyrin 4 was obtained via migration of one of the meso-phenyl groups to the beta-position of the neighboring pyrrolic ring. By employing the flexible cavity of 1 for metal coordination, Pd(II) complexation occurred with a specific meso oxygenation to give a bimetallic complex 5. In contrast to the rich oxidation reactions, reduction of 1 with NaBH4 resulted in the regioselective nucleophilic hydrogen substitution reaction at the para position of one of the meso-C6F5 groups. These results provide a practical approach for synthesizing novel interrupted or aromatic pi-conjugated frameworks showing NIR absorptions.

  • Regioselectively Halogenated Expanded Porphyrinoids as Building Blocks for Constructing Porphyrin-Porphyrinoid Heterodyads with Tunable Energy Transfer
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 141:13, s. 5294-5302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Expanded porphyrins have been attracting increasing attention owing to their unique optical and electrochemical properties as well as switchable aromaticity. Toward material applications, regioselective functionalization of the expanded porphyrins at their periphery is indeed challenging due to the presence of multiple reactive sites. Herein, a set of regioselective halogenated isomers (L5-Br-A/B/C) of neo-confused isosmaragdyrin (L5) are synthesized by a combination of the halogenation reaction of L5 and sequential macrocycleto-macrocycle transformation reactions of its halogenated isomers. On this basis, the regioselectively functionalized isosmaragdyrins are utilized as building blocks for constructing multichromophoric porphyrinoids, specifically, heterodyads L5-ZnP-A/B/C, in which a common zinc porphyrin is linked at three different pyrrolic positions of isosmaragdyrins, respectively, by Sonogashira coupling reactions. The highly efficient energy cascade from porphyrin to isosmaragdyrin is elucidated using steady-state/time-resolved spectroscopies and theoretical calculations. Notably, the energy transfer processes from the porphyrin to the isosmaragdyrin moieties as well as the excitation energy transfer rates in L5-ZnP-A/B/C are highly dependent on the linking sites by through-bond and Forster-type resonance energy transfer mechanisms. The site-selective functionalization and subsequent construction of a set of heterodyads of the expanded porphyrinoid would provide opportunities for developing new materials for optoelectronic applications.

  • Association dynamics and linear and nonlinear optical properties of an N-acetylaladanamide probe in a POPC membrane
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 135:36, s. 13590-13597
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Along with the growing evidence that relates membrane abnormalities to various diseases, biological membranes have been acknowledged as targets for therapy. Any such abnormality in the membrane structure alters the membrane potential which in principle can be captured by measuring properties of specific optical probes. There exists by now many molecular probes with absorption and fluorescence properties that are sensitive to local membrane structure and to the membrane potential. To suggest new high-performance optical probes for membrane-potential imaging it is important to understand in detail the membrane-induced structural changes in the probe, the membrane association dynamics of the probe, and its membrane-specific optical properties. To contribute to this effort, we here study an optical probe, N-acetylaladanamide (NAAA), in the presence of a POPC lipid bilayer using a multiscale integrated approach to assess the probe structure, dynamics, and optical properties in its membrane-bound status and in water solvent. We find that the probe eventually assimilates into the membrane with a specific orientation where the hydrophobic part of the probe is buried inside the lipid bilayer, while the hydrophilic part is exposed to the water solvent. The computed absorption maximum is red-shifted when compared to the gas phase. The computations of the two-photon absorption and second harmonic generation cross sections of the NAAA probe in its membrane-bound state which is of its first kind in the literature suggest that this probe can be used for imaging the membrane potential using nonlinear optical microscopy.

  • A Fully Conjugated Planar Heterocyclic [9]Circulene
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 142:33, s. 14058-14063
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fully aromatic [n]circulenes have only been known to encompass up to eight aromatic rings (n = 8), with no reports of endeavors in the synthesis of higher-order analogues (n > 8). Herein we present the first [9]circulene, formally a diazatrioxa[9]circulene, along with a tetrahydro-diazatetraoxa[10]circulene. The key transformation, for construction of the macrocyclic framework, is a simple high-yielding dimerizing condensation between 3,6-dihydroxycarbazole and glyoxal. Single crystal X-ray analysis reveals the [9]circulene to be perfectly planar and containing elongated benzene rings, which is induced by strain to accommodate planarity. Alternating bond lengths in the solid state indicate contribution from a [9]radialene resonance structure in the [9]circulene pi-system. The central nonaromatic rings of both circulenes have paratropic ring currents, as evident by nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) calculations, which can be attributed to induced paratropicity from the surrounding aromatic rings.

  • Shape Preserving Single Crystal to Amorphous to Single Crystal Polymorphic Transformation Is Possible
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 143:48, s. 20202-20206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many crystalline materials form polymorphs and undergo solid–solid transitions between different forms as a function of temperature or pressure. However, there is still a poor understanding of the mechanism of transformation. Conclusions about the transformation process are typically drawn by comparing the crystal structures before and after the conversion, but gaining detailed mechanistic knowledge is strongly impeded by the generally fast rate of these transitions. When the crystal morphology does not change, it is assumed that crystallinity is maintained throughout the process. Here we report transformation between polymorphs of ZnCl2(1,3-diethylimidazole-2-thione)2 which are sufficiently slow to allow unambiguous assignment of single crystal to single crystal transformation with shape preservation proceeding through an amorphous intermediate phase. This result fundamentally challenges the commonly accepted views of polymorphic phase transition mechanisms.

  • Direct experimental measurement of donation/back-donation in unsaturated hydrocarbon bonding to metals
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 122:49, s. 12310-12316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using resonant and off-resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy, in combination with ground-state density functional calculations, we examine the electronic structure of chemisarbed ethylene and benzene on thr Cu(110) surface to investigate the suitability of the donation/back-donation bonding model given by Dewar(1) and Chart and Duncanson(2) (DCD) for the interaction of unsaturated hydrocarbons with metal surfaces. We give an experimental verification of the DCD model and find donation/back-donation to be twice as large for ethylene as for benzene. In particular, the degree of sigma-pi mixing (rehybridization) is found to correspond to the amount of donation/back-donation, which is put in relation to the aromatic and nonaromatic pi characters of benzene and ethylene, respectively.

  • Helical self-assembly-induced singlet-triplet emissive switching in a mechanically sensitive system
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society. - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 139:2, s. 785-791
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In nanoscience, chirality has shown a significant ability to tune materials' electronic properties, whereas imposing macrochirality into the regulation of singlet-triplet features of organic optoelectronics remains a challenging research topic. Since the tuning for singlet and triplet excited-state properties in a single π-functional molecule connects to its multicolor luminescent application and potential improvement of internal quantum efficiency, we here report that supramolecular chirality can be employed to toggle the singlet and triplet emissions in a welldesigned asterisk-shaped molecule. Employing a hexathiobenzene-based single luminophore as a prototype and functionalizing it with chiral α-lipoiate side groups, we find that helical nanoarchitectures can accordingly form in mixed DMF/H20 solution. On this basis, switching between fluorescence and phosphorescence of the material can be realized upon helical self-assembly and dissociation. Such a behavior can be attributed to a helical-conformation-dependent manipulation of the intersystem crossing. Furthermore, reversible mechanoluminescence of the corresponding solid sample was also observed to rely on an analogous molecular self-assembly alternation. These results can probably provide new visions for the development of next-generation supramolecular chiral functional materials.
