  • Geminate charge recombination in alternating polyfluorene copolymer/fullerene blends
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 129:27, s. 8466-8472
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By measuring excited state and charge dynamics in blends of an alternating polyfluorene copolymer and fullerene derivative over nine orders in time and two orders in light intensity, we have monitored the light-induced processes from ultrafast charge photogeneration to much slower decay of charges by recombination. We find that at low light intensities relevant to solar cell operation relatively fast (∼30 ns) geminate recombination is the dominating charge decay process, while nongeminate recombination has a negligible contribution. The conclusion of our work is that under solar illumination conditions geminate recombination of charges may be directly competing with efficient charge collection in polymer/fullerene solar cells. © 2007 American Chemical Society.

  • Synthesis of a regioregular zwitterionic conjugated oligoelectrolyte, usable as an optical probe for detection of amyloid fibril formation at acidic pH
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 127:7, s. 2317-2323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes of the optical properties of conjugated polyelectrolytes have been utilized to monitor noncovalent interactions between biomolecules and the conjugated polyelectrolytes in sensor applications. A regioregular, zwitterionic conjugated oligoelectrolyte was synthesized in order to create a probe with a defined set of optical properties and hereby facilitate interpretation of biomolecule−oligoelectrolyte interactions. The synthesized oligoelectrolyte was used at acidic pH as a novel optical probe to detect amyloid fibril formation of bovine insulin and chicken lysozyme. Interaction of the probe with formed amyloid fibrils results in changes of the geometry and the electronic structure of the oligoelectrolyte chains, which were monitored with absorption and emission spectroscopy.

  • A New Tetracyclic Lactam Building Block for Thick, Broad-Bandgap Photovoltaics
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society. - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 136:33, s. 11578-11581
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new tetracyclic lactam building block for polymer semiconductors is reported that was designed to combine the many favorable properties that larger fused and/or amide-containing building blocks can induce, including improved solid-state packing, high charge carrier mobility, and improved charge separation. Copolymerization with thiophene resulted in a semicrystalline conjugated polymer, PTNT, with a broad bandgap of 2.2 eV. Grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering of PTNT thin films revealed a strong tendency for face-on pi-stacking of the polymer backbone, which was retained in PTNT:firllerene blends. Corresponding solar cells featured a high open-circuit voltage of 0.9 V, a fill factor around 0.6, and a power conversion efficiency as high as 596 for greater than200 nm thick active layers, regardless of variations in blend stoichiometry and nanostructure. Moreover, efficiencies of greater than4% could be retained when thick active layers of similar to 400 rim were employed. Overall, these values are the highest reported for a conjugated polymer with such a broad bandgap and are unprecedented in materials for tandem and particularly ternary blend photovoltaics. Hence, the newly developed tetracyclic lactam unit has significant potential as a conjugated building block in future organic electronic materials.

  • Geminate Charge Recombination in Polymer/Fullerene Bulk Heterojunction Films and Implications for Solar Cell Function
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 132:35, s. 12440-12451
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the influence of three different fullerene derivatives on the charge generation and recombination dynamics of polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell blends. Charge generation in APFO3/[70]PCBM and APFO3/[60]PCBM is very similar and somewhat slower than charge generation in APFO3/[70]BTPF. This difference qualitatively matches the trend in free energy change of electron transfer estimated from the LUMO energies of the polymer and fullerene derivatives. The first order (geminate) charge recombination rate is significantly different for the three fullerene derivatives studied and increases in the order APFO3/[70]PCBM

  • Charge Carrier Generation and Transport in Different Stoichiometry APFO3:PC61BM Solar Cells
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society. - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 136:32, s. 11331-11338
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we studied carrier drift dynamics in APFO3:PC61BM solar cells of varied stoichiometry (2:1, 1:1, and 1:4 APFO3:PC61BM) over a wide time range, from subpicoseconds to microseconds with a combination of ultrafast optical electric field probing and conventional transient integrated photocurrent techniques. Carrier drift and extraction dynamics are strongly stoichiometry dependent: the speed of electron or hole drift increases with higher concentration of PC61BM or polymer, respectively. The electron extraction from a sample with 80% PC61BM takes place during hundreds of picoseconds, but slows down to sub-microseconds in a sample with 33% PC61BM. The hole extraction is less stoichiometry dependent: it varies form sub-nanoseconds to tens of nanoseconds when the PC61BM concentration changes from 33% to 80%. The electron extraction rate correlates with the conversion efficiency of solar cells, leading to the conclusion that fast electron motion is essential for efficient charge carrier separation preventing their geminate recombination.

  • A Planar Copolymer for High Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 131:41, s. 14612-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An alternating copolymer, poly(2-(5-(5,6-bis(octyloxy)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-7-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-9-octyt-9H-carbazole) (HXS-1), was designed, synthesized, and used as the donor material for high efficiency polymer solar cells. The close packing of the polymer chains in the solid state was confirmed by XRD. A J(sc) of 9.6 mA/cm(2), a V-proportional to of 0.81 V, an FF of 0.69, and a PCE of 5.4% were achieved with HXS-1 and [6,6]-phenyl C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as a bulk heterojunction active layer spin-coated from a solvent mixture of 1,2-dichlorobenzene and 1,8-diodooctane (97.5:2.5) under air mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5 G) irradiation of 100 mW/cm(2).

  • Separating Ion and Electron Transport: The Bilayer Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cell
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY. - : ACS American Chemical Society. - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 132:19, s. 6646-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current generation of polymer light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) suffers from insufficient stability during operation. One identified culprit is the active material, which comprises an intimate blend between an ion-conducting electrolyte and an electron-transporting conjugated polymer, as it tends to undergo phase separation during long-term operation and the intimate contact between the ion- and electron-transporting components provokes side reactions. To address these stability issues, we present here a bilayer LEC structure in which the electrolyte is spatially separated from the conjugated polymer. We demonstrate that employing this novel device structure, with its clearly separated ion- and electron-transport paths, leads to distinctly improved LEC performance in the form of decreased turn-on time and improved light emission. We also point out that it will allow for the utilization of combinations of active materials having mutually incompatible solubilities.

  • Electroluminescence from Charge Transfer States in Polymer Solar Cells
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 131:33, s. 11819-11824
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we report the weak but omnipresent electroluminescence (EL) from several types of organic polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells biased in the forward direction. The light emitted from blends of Some commonly used polymers and the fullerene molecule is significantly different from that of any of the pure materials comprising the blend. The lower energy of the blend EL is found to correlate with both the voltage onset of emission and the open-circuit voltage of the photovoltaic cell under solar illumination. WE., accordingly interpret the emission to originate from interfacial charge transfer state recombination and emphasize EL as a very valuable tool to characterize the charge transfer state present in donor/acceptor organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells.

  • An Easily Accessible Isoindigo-Based Polymer for High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5126 .- 0002-7863. ; 133:36, s. 14244-14247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new, low-band-gap alternating copolymer consisting of terthiophene and isoindigo has been designed and synthesized. Solar cells based on this polymer and PC(71)BM show a power conversion efficiency of 6.3%, which is a record for polymer solar cells based on a polymer with an optical band gap below 1.5 eV. This work demonstrates the great potential of isoindigo moieties as electron-deficient units for building donor-acceptor-type polymers for high-performance polymer solar cells.
