  • The symbiotic and bipolar nebula M2-9: Morphological variability of the collimated ionized wind arising from the core
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 74:3, s. 594-601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied the central region of bipolar nebula M 2-9 using radio-continuum observations obtained from the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) interferometers. This work presents new images at similar to 43 GHz (similar to 7.0 mm) and similar to 345 GHz (similar to 0.9 mm) with angular resolutions of similar to 0 ''.047 and 0 ''.09, respectively. The continuum emission at similar to 43 GHz shows an elongated jet-like structure perpendicular to the similar to 345 GHz observation. We conclude that both emissions could correspond to tracing an isothermal collimated fast wind with constant expansion velocity and being driven by the circumstellar ring traced by ALMA. Although this configuration has been discussed within the scope of planetary nebulae models, there is a remarkable fact: the collimated fast wind shows morphological spatial variability. This supports the idea of a symbiotic binary system within the innermost part of M 2-9, which would be composed of a white dwarf and an AGB star. The latter could explain the mirror symmetry observed at larger scales due to their orbital motion.

  • TOI-2285b: A 1.7 Earth-radius planet near the habitable zone around a nearby M dwarf
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 74:1, s. L1-L8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery of TO1-2285b, a sub-Neptune-sized planet transiting a nearby (42 pc) M dwarf with a period of 27.3 d. We identified the transit signal from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite photometric data, which we confirmed with ground-based photometric observations using the multiband imagers MuSCAT2 and MuSCAT3. Combining these data with other follow-up observations including high-resolution spectroscopy with the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph, high-resolution imaging with the SPeckle Polarimeter, and radial velocity (RV) measurements with the InfraRed Doppler instrument, we find that the planet has a radius of 1.74 +/- 0.08 R-circle plus, a mass of <19.5 M-circle plus + (95% c.I.), and an insolation flux of 1.54 +/- 0.14 times that of the Earth. Although the planet resides just outside the habitable zone for a rocky planet, if the planet harbors an H2O layer under a hydrogen-rich atmosphere, then liquid water could exist on the surface of the H2O layer depending on the planetary mass and water mass fraction. The bright host star in the near-infrared (K-s = 9.0) makes this planet an excellent target for further RV and atmospheric observations to improve our understanding of the composition, formation, and habitability of sub-Neptune-sized planets.

  • Big Three Dragons: A z=7.15 Lyman-break galaxy detected in [Oiii] 88 mu m, [Cii] 158 mu m, and dust continuum with ALMA
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 71:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present new ALMA observations and physical properties of a Lyman break galaxy at z = 7.15. Our target, B14-65666, has a bright ultra-violet (UV) absolute magnitude, M-UV approximate to -22.4, and has been spectroscopically identified in Ly alpha with a small rest-frame equivalent width of approximate to 4 angstrom. A previous Hubble Space TElescope (HST) image has shown that the target is composed of two spatially separated clumps in the rest-frame UV. With ALMA, we have newly detected spatially resolved [Oiii] 88 mu m, [Cii] 158 mu m, and their underlying dust continuum emission. In the whole system of B14-65666, the [Oiii] and [Cii] lines have consistent redshifts of 7.1520 +/- 0.0003, and the [Oiii] luminosity, (34.4 +/- 4.1)x 10(8)L(circle dot), is about three times higher than the [Cii] luminosity, (11.0 +/- 1.4) x 10(8)L(circle dot). With our two continuum flux densities, the dust temperature is constrained to be T-d approximate to 50-60K under the assumption of a dust emissivity index of beta(d) = 2.0-1.5, leading to a large total infrared luminosity of L-TIR approximate to 1 x 10(12)L(circle dot). Owing to our high spatial resolution data, we show that the [Oiii] and [Cii] emission can be spatially decomposed into two clumps associated with the two rest-frame UV clumps whose spectra are kinematically separated by approximate to 200kms(-1). We also find these two clumps have comparable UV, infrared, [Oiii], and [Cii] luminosities. Based on these results, we argue that B14-65666 is a starburst galaxy induced by a major merger. The merger interpretation is also supported by the large specific star formation rate (defined as the star formation rate per unit stellar mass), sSFR Gyr(-1), inferred from our SED fitting. Probably, a strong UV radiation field caused by intense star formation contributes to its high dust temperature and the [Oiii]-to-[Cii] luminosity ratio.

  • FLASHING: New high-velocity H2O masers in IRAS 18286−0959
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 72:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discovered new high-velocity components of H2O maser emission in one of the “water fountain” sources, IRAS 18286−0959, which has been monitored using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope in the FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO- and H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project since 2018 December. The maser spectra show new components with extremely high expansion velocities (>200 km s−1 projected in the line of sight), some of which are located symmetrically in the spectrum with respect to the systemic velocity. They were also mapped with KaVA (KVN and VERA Combined Array) in 2019 March. We located some of these maser components closer to the central stellar system than other high-velocity components (50-200 km s−1) that have been confirmed to be associated with the known bipolar outflow. The new components would have flashed in the fast collimated jet at a speed of over 300 km s−1 (soon) after 2011 when they had not been detected. The fastest of the new components seem to indicate rapid deceleration in these spectra; however, our present monitoring is still too sparse to unambiguously confirm it (up to 50 km s−1 yr−1) and too short to reveal their terminal expansion velocity, which will be equal to the expansion velocity that has been observed (vexp ∼ 120 km s−1). Future occurrences of such extreme-velocity components may provide a good opportunity to investigate possible recurrent outflow ignitions. Thus, the sculpture of the parental envelope will be traced by the dense gas that is entrained by the fast jet and exhibits spectacular distributions of the relatively stable maser features.

  • Star cluster formation in Orion A
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 73, s. S239-S255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce new analysis methods for studying the star cluster formation processes in Orion A, especially examining the scenario of a cloud-cloud collision. We utilize the CARMA-NRO Orion survey (CO)-C-13 (1-0) data to compare molecular gas to the properties of young stellar objects from the SDSS III IN-SYNC survey. We show that the increase of v(13CO) - v(YSO) and Sigma scatter of older YSOs can be signals of cloud-cloud collision. SOFIA-upGREAT 158 mu m [C II] archival data toward the northern part of Orion A are also compared to the (CO)-C-13 data to test whether the position and velocity offsets between the emission from these two transitions resemble those predicted by a cloud-cloud collision model. We find that the northern part of Orion A, including regions ONC-OMC-1, OMC-2, OMC-3, and OMC-4, shows qualitative agreements with the cloud-cloud collision scenario, while in one of the southern regions, NGC 1999, there is no indication of such a process in causing the birth of new stars. On the other hand, another southern cluster, L 1641 N, shows slight tendencies of cloud-cloud collision. Overall, our results support the cloud-cloud collision process as being an important mechanism for star cluster formation in Orion A.

  • Of NBOs and kHz QPOs: a Low-Frequency Modulation in Resonant Oscillations of Relativistic Accretion Disks
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - 0004-6264. ; 56:5, s. 819-822
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The origin of quasi-periodic modulations of flux in the kilohertz range (kHz QPOs), observed in low-mass X-ray binaries, is usually assumed to be physically distinct from that of the "normal branch oscillations" (NBOs) in the Z-sources. We show that a low-frequency modulation of the kHz QPOs is a natural consequence of the non-linear relativistic resonance suggested previously to explain the properties of the high-frequency twin peaks. The theoretical results discussed here are reminiscent of the 6 Hz variations of frequency and amplitude of the kHz QPOs reported by Yu, van der Klis, and Jonker (2001).

  • FLASHING: Project overview
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Publication of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - 2053-051X .- 0004-6264. ; 75:6, s. 1183-1213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes an overview of the FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by the Nobeyama Generation) project promoted using the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, which aims to intensively monitor H2O (at 22 GHz) and SiO (at 43 GHz) masers associated with so-called "water fountain" sources. Here we show scientific results based on the data taken in the first five seasons of FLASHING, from 2018 December to 2023 April. We show the evolution of the H2O maser spectra, discovering new spectral components that break the record of the jet's top speed and/or systematic velocity drifts in the spectrum indicating acceleration or deceleration of the maser gas clumps. For the 43 GHz SiO maser emission, we newly detect it in one source and find that it is no longer present in another source. This implies that the jets from these water fountains can be accelerated or decelerated, and show how circumstellar envelopes are destroyed.

  • Detection of polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-6264 .- 2053-051X. ; 70:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results from the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) observation of the Crab nebula. The main part of SGD is a Compton camera, which in addition to being a spectrometer, is capable of measuring polarization of gamma-ray photons. The Crab nebula is one of the brightest X-ray / gamma-ray sources on the sky, and, the only source from which polarized X-ray photons have been detected. SGD observed the Crab nebula during the initial test observation phase of Hitomi. We performed the data analysis of the SGD observation, the SGD background estimation and the SGD Monte Carlo simulations, and, successfully detected polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with only about 5 ks exposure time. The obtained polarization fraction of the phase-integrated Crab emission (sum of pulsar and nebula emissions) is (22.1% +/- 10.6%), and, the polarization angle is 110.degrees 7 + 13.degrees 2 /-13.degrees 0 in the energy range of 60-160 keV (The errors correspond to the 1 sigma deviation). The confidence level of the polarization detection was 99.3%. The polarization angle measured by SGD is about one sigma deviation with the projected spin axis of the pulsar, 124.degrees 0 +/- 0.degrees 1.

  • Hitomi X-ray observation of the pulsar wind nebula G21.5-0.9
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-6264 .- 2053-051X. ; 70:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results from the Hitomi X-ray observation of a young composite-type supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5-0.9, whose emission is dominated by the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) contribution. The X-ray spectra in the 0.8-80 keV range obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), Soft X-ray Imager, and Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) show a significant break in the continuum as previously found with the NuSTAR observation. After taking into account all known emissions from the SNR other than the PWN itself, we find that the Hitomi spectra can be fitted with a broken power law with photon indices of Gamma(1) = 1.74 +/- 0.02 and Gamma(2) = 2.14 +/- 0.01 below and above the break at 7.1 +/- 0.3 keV, which is significantly lower than the NuSTAR result (similar to 9.0 keV). The spectral break cannot be reproduced by time-dependent particle injection one-zone spectral energy distribution models, which strongly indicates that a more complex emission model is needed, as suggested by recent theoretical models. We also search for narrow emission or absorption lines with the SXS, and perform a timing analysis of PSR J1833-1034 with the HXI and the Soft Gamma-ray Detector. No significant pulsation is found from the pulsar. However, unexpectedly, narrow absorption line features are detected in the SXS data at 4.2345 keV and 9.296 keV with a significance of 3.65 sigma. While the origin of these features is not understood, their mere detection opens up a new field of research and was only possible with the high resolution, sensitivity, and ability to measure extended sources provided by an X-ray microcalorimeter.

  • Alpha-Viscosity Effects in Slender Tori
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - 0004-6264. ; 64:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore effects of the Shakura-Sunyaev alpha-viscosity on the dynamics and oscillations of slender tori. We start with a slow secular evolution of the torus. We show that the angular-momentum profile approaches the Keplerian one on a timescale longer than a dynamical one by a factor on the order of 1/alpha. We then focus our attention on the oscillations of the torus. We discuss the effects of various angular-momentum distributions. Using a perturbation theory, we have found a rather general result that the high-order acoustic modes are damped by the viscosity, while the high-order inertial modes are enhanced. We calculate viscous growth rates for the lowest-order modes, and show that already the lowest-order inertial mode is unstable for less-steep angular-momentum profiles, or very close to the central gravitating object.
