- This article analyses the Boundary Work conducted around law as an academic field of knowledge in the 1930s and 1940s in Sweden. This period designates a formative phase for many research disciplines. The boundaries negotiated and drawn then are still, to a large extent, regarded as valid. The purpose of the article is therefore to give a historical and political perspective on the present boundaries of legal science. The article argues that legal science lacked a strategic discipline builder and that political scientist Herbert Tingsten and philosopher Ingemar Hedenius were able to colonize the societal relevance of law as an academic discipline for the sake of their own disciplines, thus rendering legal science a discipline with narrow boundaries, isolated and subordinate to the discipline of philosophy. It is argued that this was achieved by representing the knowledge regime of positivism, a philosophy of science aiming at enforcing the formal unity of academic disciplines in a hierarchic formation where the place at the top is held by philosophy.

- Combining cultural theory with the philosophy of law, this essay argues that the advent of state-managed, industrial genocide has brought about a crisis of confidence in the institutions of modern society. A wave of incrimination emanates from the holocaust, which primarily strikes against the institutions of law, but also affects the credibility of sociosymbolic mandate as such. Drawing on the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, Walter Benjamin and Giorgio Agamben, the author proposes that the dynamics of this crisis may be understood in epistemological terms through the notion of “sociosymbolic sleep” – a psycho-cultural barrier between incompatible registers of knowledge, that the facts of industrial genocide threatens to shatter.
