    • The widespread use of web-based resources has dramatically increased access to scientifically based information of use to both health professionals and the general public. Scientific results are, however, often hard for people outside the scientific community to understand. Moreover, access to large amounts of information of various kinds often places insurmountable demands on the readers to understand, assess and select what is relevant and trustworthy. This article describes the development of «Thematic Room Stroke- care, social care and rehabilitation» at Vårdalinstitutet, the Swedish Institute for Health Sciences. This is a Swedish project resulting from close cooperation between an editing committee and about 30 researchers. It aims to present research findings on a website that healthcare teams, patients and their families and the public can easily access and use. A syllabus and texts connected with each theme may be downloaded for use in local study circles. The idea is to stimulate the participants’ interest in learning independently and create a forum for dialogue and discussion in different contexts. Professionals use the website material regularly for classes and informing patients. It is hoped that an interactive forum to determine how the information is understood and used will provide important feedback on how the virtual Thematic Room Stroke may be further improved

    • Aim: To deepen the knowledge of difficulties in registered nurses telephone advice and identify possibilities to master these. Background: Telephone advice increases the accessibility to health care and the streamlined work at primary health care centres. The goal of telephone advice nursing is to give a correct advice, adapted to the caller’s situation, in order to reach correct care level. However, nurses’ telephone advice includes risks for misjudgement and may risk the patient safety. Methods: A systematic and manual literature study was used in CINAHL and Pubmed. A total of 38 studies were identified and 13 articles were screened in full text.Findings: Nurses’ had difficulties in telephone advice in following areas: computerized decision aids, non-visual communication, third-part communication, limited resources, the nurses’ vulnerability, genus and ethnicity, and also ethical questions. Conclusion: Nurses perceived difficulties in telephone advice. They should take part in the development of computerized decision support and receive continuous training in communication skills. Nurses’ telephone advice should be facilitated by the existence of an open climate at the workplace, to discuss and to reflect on difficulties, in order to reach patient safety.

    • Purpose: To describe women’s experiences of early pregnancy after their experience of earlier miscarriage(s). Method: This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological perspective. Midwives working in Maternity Healthcare Center were intermediaries in the data collection. The analysis material consisted of six open interviews with women in early stages of pregnancy that have experienced miscarriage in the past. The data analysis created an essence of the women´s experiences. Results: All of the interviewees are happy to be pregnant. For some of the women the happiness is mixed with worry about experiencing another miscarriage. They are reluctant to experience the grief and loss that had accompanied their previous miscarriages. Those women are able to explain their misgivings to friends and family experience less worry and reluctance. A positive outlook for their pregnancy and to see miscarriage as something natural makes it easier to live with the outcomes. Conclusion: Women who have had a previous experience of miscarriage have mixed feelings of happiness and worry in early stages of pregnancy. Those women that choose to think positively accept miscarriage as part of nature’s way and feel an inner peace. All of the women realize the importance of finding peace in their pregnancy.

    • The aim with this literature review was to describe content, objectives, design, and outcomes of support groups for parentally bereaved children three to twelve years of age. In a support group with children in similar situation the children's thoughts, experiences and feelings will be normalised through different activities. Pedagogical methods include creative activities of different kinds, e.g. painting, writing letters and poems, reading stories, play and games. The purposes of the methods are to accept and understand the reality of the loss, to understand and work through the grieving, to enhance family communication, and to keep the memory of the death and go on living. Organisation and structure are described in relation to development levels and ages of children and youths. Outcomes of groups are characterized by clinical observations and a dearth of evaluative studies. All bereaved children should have the opportunity to participate in a support group when a parent, sibling or other relative dies. Well developed services for bereaved children should be a matter of health care policy and quality.

    • Introduction:Pain in connection with needles is a major reason to children’s anxiety and fear. Parents have a unique competence and knowledge about their children’s experiences and reactions that should be regarded as important in health care. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe a group of parents' perceptions of the factors that influence their children's experience in relation to venepuncture. Method: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 11 parents. The interviews were based on the question “What factors influence your child's experience in relation to venepuncture?”. The data were analysed through manifest and latent content analysis. Results: The manifest analysis resulted in five categories: Children's experience of fear and stress, The parent's behaviour, Information and preparation, Distraction and Staff expertise. The latent content analysis led to the theme: Adapting the peripheral venepuncture for the individual child is both the responsibility of the parents and the health care professionals. Conclusions: Parents have specific knowledge of the child they wish to convey to the nursing staff. They also want to work in collaboration with staff to minimize the child's anxiety and fear. Parents should be seen as a resource in the child’s health care.

  • PHASE-20 : Ett nytt instrument för skattning av möjliga läkemedelsrelaterade symtom hos äldre personer i äldreboende
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Vård i Norden. - 0107-4083 .- 1890-4238. ; 29:4, s. 9-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundElderly persons may easily develop adverse drug effects. In Sweden, at least seven untested instruments are used for assessing possible drug-related symptoms in elderly people.AimThe aim was to develop a more valid and reliable instrument for identification of possible therapeutic drug-related symptoms. Methods The seven pre-existing instruments consisted of 39 symptoms, which were coordinated and then analyzed for content validity.  After revision, the instrument included 19 symptoms or symptom-groups and one open variable. To assess the construct validity and reliability, the new instrument, PHASE-20, was tested in a randomized controlled trial with elderly persons living in two nursing homes before and after evaluation and correction of their therapeutic drugs. Results PHASE-20 was found to possess an acceptable consistency, test-retest reliability, and internal validity. Construct validity was not supported in this study, as there were no significant differences between groups after the intervention. Therapeutic drug-related symptoms among elderly might be too heterogeneous to be captured into a screening instrument. However, PHASE-20 was welcomed by both patients and staff as a well structured, easily understandable, and useful assessment instrument. Conclusion PHASE-20 can be used for identifying possible drug-related symptoms among elderly who are able to cooperate at least partly.
