  • Occupational Balance in People with Schizophrenia
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 26:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to illuminate the concept of occupational balance and to study its relation to occupational engagement as assessed by the POES, health related factors, and quality of life among 72 persons with schizophrenia. Three constructs: being under-occupied, being over-occupied, and having occupational balance, were developed to help assess occupational balance. The inter-reliability testing of occupational balance resulted in good agreement on average. The descriptive statistics showed that 32 participants were deemed to be under-occupied, 35 participants had occupational balance, while five participants were over-occupied. Significant statistical differences were found between the subgroups of being under-occupied and having occupational balance regarding negative symptoms, sense of coherence and quality of life.

  • Psychosocial Factors’ Influence on Work Ability of People Experiencing Sick Leave Resulting From Common Mental Disorders
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 31:3, s. 283-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A description of how people with the experience of long-term sick leave resulting from common mental disorders perceive that psychosocial factors influence their work ability. The Worker Role Interview was conducted with 14 informants and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The informants believed in their future work ability. Most had had to adjust their habits and routines to manage their working and private lives in relation to their mental health problems. Occupational therapists need more knowledge about how to strengthen clients' beliefs in their occupational abilities and how to organize their daily activities in a balanced fashion.

  • Explicit and implicit methods in psychosocial occupational therapy
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - 0164-212X. ; 18:2, s. 3-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sometimes the goal of a psychosocial occupational therapy intervention is not obvious for someone observing the process, and this may lead to misunderstandings as to the targeted outcomes for various occupational therapy methods. Summarizing features found in psychosocial occupational therapy practice, in textbooks, and in occupational therapy models, this paper proposes a simple structure for characterizing psychosocial occupational therapy interventions and for describing some disparities between different programs. The structure builds on two concepts, explicit and implicit methods, which form the end-poles of a continuum. Similarities and differences between the two extremes are described, addressing the following characteristics: long-term goals, motivational source, short-term goals, activities used, strategy used, time required, theoretical framework, and position in the profession.

  • Outcome of occupational therapy in a psychiatric day care 2unit for long-term mentally III patients
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - 0164-212X. ; 14:4, s. 21-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Twenty patients, receiving group based psychiatric outpatient occupational therapy, were assessed at admission and discharge regarding psychiatric symptoms (SCL-90-R), global mental health (HSRS), quality of life (SQoL), and occupational performance (AOF). The patients were in treatment from 4 to 30 months. There were statistically significant improvements from admission to discharge on all variables except quality of life. Thirteen of the patients were judged as showing clinically significant improvement and exhibiting normal functioning at discharge. On the basis of medical records the outcome of the occupational therapy group was compared with a matched group of 20 patients receiving treatment-as-usual, which implied verbal therapy weekly or less frequently. The occupational therapy group improved significantly more on the Global Assessment Scale but did not improve more on scores for the Strauss-Carpenter criteria.

  • The Redesigning Daily Occupations (ReDO)-Program : Supporting Women With Stress-Related Disorders to Return to Work - Knowledge Base, Structure, and Content
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - Philadelphia : Routledge. - 0164-212X .- 1541-3101. ; 29:1, s. 85-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the structure and content of an occupational therapy group treatment program intended to enable lifestyle changes for return to work, used with women who have stress-related disorders. The Redesigning Daily Occupations-program constitutes three phases. Phase I focuses on occupational self-analysis. Phase II focuses on setting goals and strategies for change, and Phase III is a job placement program that provides opportunities to implement the strategies when work is restarted. The program may be of use for the target group and additional populations where people experience difficulties in organizing their daily occupations. The program outcome should be evaluated. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

  • Occupational Choices for People with Psychiatric Disabilities : Comparing Attendees and Non-Attendees at Community-Based Day Centers
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. - 0164-212X. ; 32:4, s. 329-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research has shown that people with psychiatric disabilities who attend a day center rate their satisfaction with daily occupations equally in comparison with non-attendees. The current study investigates which occupations the target group performs and also differences in occupational choices between attendees and non-attendees. Reported occupations were analyzed with content analysis. Day center attendees reported more productive occupations, while non-attendees reported more recreational occupations and a greater breadth of occupations. This implies that non-attendees might compensate a lack of work-like occupations at a day center with satisfying recreational occupations. The results can guide development of psychiatric occupational-based rehabilitation.
