  • Smallholder rice farmers' post-harvest decisions: preferences and structural factors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 47:4, s. 1587-1620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study post-harvest decisions among Tanzanian rice farmers. Risk and time preference experiments are used to understand post-harvest decisions. In particular, we investigate storage and processing decisions, which according to our study can increase income by more than 50 per cent, but also introduce risk and time delays. Experimentally elicited risk and time preferences are statistically significant in explaining these post-harvest decisions. Impatient farmers are less likely to store paddy, and risk-averse farmers are less likely both to process and store paddy for future sales. Also, structural factors, such as milling costs, transportation costs and storage losses, influence the post-harvest choices.

  • Rationalising inefficiency in dairy production: evidence from an over-time approach
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 49, s. 433-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We argue that inefficiency can be part of a strategic self-repositioning adjustment process beyond the general interpretation of poor performance. Based on the rational inefficiency hypothesis, we examine the simultaneous dynamics of efficiency and animal welfare improving investments over time in dairy farms. Using rotating panel data from Swedish dairy farms and implementing multidirectional efficiency analysis and Markov transitional dynamic analysis, the paper provides evidence that for some farms inefficiency is temporary and part of rational decision along their trajectory towards multi-efficiency (high efficiency-high animal welfare). The findings show the importance of time dynamics in efficiency achievements with implications to cross-sectional view.

  • The trade effect of private standards
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 46, s. 267-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent changes in the agrifood sector have fuelled the use of private food standards. These standards are voluntary and generally serve as a risk management tool. This paper presents an analysis of the relationship between private food standards and trade. Specifically, we analyse the effect of certification to GlobalGAP on EU15 imports of fresh fruits and vegetables at product level using a gravity-type model with fixed effects. We find that certification to GlobalGAP has a positive effect on both the extensive and the intensive margin of trade.

  • Price premiums for eco-labelled seafood: effects of the MSC certification suspension in the Baltic Sea cod fishery
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 47:1, s. 50-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Certification programmes in fisheries have been introduced as a market-based tool for promoting sustainable fishing practices. While consumers appreciate the eco-labels by paying a price premium in the retail market, there is not much research on whether the premium transmits to the fishing industry. This paper adds to the literature by studying price premiums at port for the Swedish Baltic Sea cod fishery that had its Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification suspended in 2015. The result shows a price premium of around 11 per cent for small-size cod prior to the suspension of the certification, but no premium for larger cod.

  • Red, yellow, or green? Do consumers’ choices of food products depend on the label design?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 49:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a stated preference survey, we investigate to what extent consumers are willing to make costlier food consumption choices to decrease damages to health, the environment, and animal well-being. In particular, we investigate how the graphic design of the labels affects choice behaviour by comparing traffic–light and greyscale labels and plain-text description with each other. We found that the red colour in traffic lights seems to strengthen respondents’ preferences for avoiding the worst level of a collective attribute such as climate impact or antibiotics use, while the green colour strengthened preferences for the more private attribute, namely healthiness. On average, the price premiums for a green label compared with a red label is 52 per cent for healthiness, 64 per cent for both animal welfare and antibiotics, and 20 per cent for climate impact.

  • Accommodating satisficing behaviour in stated choice experiments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 46, s. 133-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accumulating evidence suggests that respondents in stated choice experiments use simplifying strategies. Such behaviour is a deviation from random utility theory and can lead to wrong inferences regarding preferences. This is a first attempt to systematically explore satisficing in stated choice experiments. We consider 944 satisficing rules and allow respondents to revise the rules adopted throughout the choice sequence. Only a minority of respondents used the same satisficing rule across the entire sequence. Allowing for updating reveals that the use of the heuristic changes over the choice sequence. Considering satisficing behaviour leads to improved model fits and different marginal willingness-to-pay estimates.

  • Cost pass-through in the Swedish coffee market
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 45:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cost pass-through to retail prices shows how changes in marginal costs are allocated between producers and consumers, and it is, therefore, closely related to market structure and competition. This paper uses Swedish data on coffee products at the barcode level to evaluate pass-through from the cost of green coffee beans, the main marginal cost, to the retail price of roasted and ground coffee. First long-run cost pass-through is estimated for each product, and then regression is used to analyse how pass-through varies across market shares, retailer-owned brands and other product characteristics. A general result is that pass-through is roughly complete for products with large market shares, while those with small market shares have low pass-through rates. There is no evidence that retailer-owned brands have higher pass-through than brand-name products with similar market shares, which would be the case if retailer-owned brands avoided double marginalisation through vertical integration. Thus, although there is not perfect competition in the Swedish coffee market, a large part of it appears to be highly competitive.

  • Climate change and regulation of nitrogen loads under moral hazard
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 41:2, s. 327-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the European Union, it is agreed that watershed-based management of water quality problems is more efficient than centralised arrangements. In this study, a mechanism for allocating international funds to watershed authorities for nitrogen abatement in the presence of moral hazard is investigated. The results show that when there is a risk of climate change, the cost of moral hazard to the international funding agency can be high if there is a moderate likelihood of climate change and the watershed authority is guaranteed a high minimum compensation.

  • Chain interdependencies, measurement problems and efficient governance structure: cooperatives versus publicly listed firms
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 39, s. 241-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We determine the circumstances when the absence of public listing, often believed to be a disadvantage, makes a cooperative the unique efficient governance structure. This is established in a multi-task principalagent model, capturing that cooperatives are not publicly listed and their CEOs have to bring the downstream enterprise to value as well as to serve upstream member interests. Not having a public listing prevents the CEO from choosing the level of the downstream activities too high. Cooperatives are uniquely efficient when the upstream marginal product multiplied with a function increasing in the strength of the chain complementarities is higher than the downstream marginal product.

  • Measuring the impact of agricultural production shocks on international trade flows
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 47, s. 1094-1132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to measure the sensitivity of traded quantities and trade unit values to agricultural production shocks. We develop a general equilibrium model of trade in which production shocks in exporting countries affect both traded quantities and trade unit values. The model includes per-unit trade costs and develops a methodology to quantify their size exploiting the trade unit value data. Using bilateral trade flow data for a large sample of countries and agricultural commodities, we find that the intensive margin of trade is relatively inelastic to production shocks, with a 1 per cent increase in production leading to a 0.5 per cent increase in exports. We also find that per-unit trade costs are large, comprising 15-20 per cent of import unit values on average. Overall, our results suggest that there is room for improving trade as a mechanism for coping with food production volatility.
