  • Brain responses to audiovisual speech mismatch in infants are associated with individual differences in looking behaviour

    • Research on audiovisual speech integration has reported high levels of individual variability, especially among young infants. In the present study we tested the hypothesis that this variability results from individual differences in the maturation of audiovisual speech processing during infancy. A developmental shift in selective attention to audiovisual speech has been demonstrated between 6 and 9 months with an increase in the time spent looking to articulating mouths as compared to eyes (Lewkowicz & Hansen-Tift. (2012) Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA, 109, 1431-1436; Tomalski et al. (2012) Eur. J. Dev. Psychol., 1-14). In the present study we tested whether these changes in behavioural maturational level are associated with differences in brain responses to audiovisual speech across this age range. We measured high-density event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to videos of audiovisually matching and mismatched syllables /ba/ and /ga/, and subsequently examined visual scanning of the same stimuli with eye-tracking. There were no clear age-specific changes in ERPs, but the amplitude of audiovisual mismatch response (AVMMR) to the combination of visual /ba/ and auditory /ga/ was strongly negatively associated with looking time to the mouth in the same condition. These results have significant implications for our understanding of individual differences in neural signatures of audiovisual speech processing in infants, suggesting that they are not strictly related to chronological age but instead associated with the maturation of looking behaviour, and develop at individual rates in the second half of the first year of life.

    • Recent human behavioral studies have shown semantic and/or lexical processing for stimuli presented below the auditory perceptionthreshold. Here, we investigated electroencephalographic responses to words, pseudo-words and complex sounds, in conditionswhere phonological and lexical categorizations were behaviorally successful (categorized stimuli) or unsuccessful(uncategorized stimuli). Data showed a greater decrease in low-beta power at left-hemisphere temporal electrodes for categorizednon-lexical sounds (complex sounds and pseudo-words) than for categorized lexical sounds (words), consistent with the signatureof a failure in lexical access. Similar differences between lexical and non-lexical sounds were observed for uncategorized stimuli,although these stimuli did not yield evoked potentials or theta activity. The results of the present study suggest that behaviorallyuncategorized stimuli were processed at the lexical level, and provide evidence of the neural bases of the results observed in previousbehavioral studies investigating auditory perception in the absence of stimulus awareness.

  • Region‐of‐interest analysis approaches in neuroimaging studies of body ownership : An activation likelihood estimation meta‐analysis

    • How do we feel that we own our body? By manipulating the integration of multisensory signals and creating the illusory experience of owning external body parts and entire bodies, researchers have investigated the neurofunctional correlates of body ownership. Recent attempts to synthesize the neuroimaging literature of body ownership through meta-analysis have shown partly inconsistent results. A large proportion of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) findings on body ownership include analyses based on regions of interest (ROIs). This approach can produce inflated findings when results are synthesized in meta-analyses. We conducted a systematic search of the fMRI literature of ownership of body parts and entire bodies. Three activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses were conducted, testing the impact of including ROI-based findings. When both whole-brain and ROI-based results were included, frontal and posterior parietal multisensory areas were associated with body ownership. When only ROI-based results were included, larger areas of the frontal and posterior parietal cortices and the middle occipital gyrus were associated with body ownership. A whole-brain meta-analysis, excluding ROI-based results, found no significant convergence of activation across the brain. These findings highlight the difficulty of quantitatively synthesizing a neuroimaging field where a large part of the literature is based on findings from ROI-based analyses. We discuss these findings in the light of current practices within this field of research and highlight current problems of meta-analytic approaches of body ownership. We recommend the sharing of unthresholded data as a means to facilitate future meta-analyses of the neuroimaging literature of body ownership.
