  • Postmodern Management? : From Facts to Fiction in Theory and Practice
  • 1989
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 5:3, s. 201-217
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Postmodernism has recently cropped up as a new buzz word in the organization and management sciences, and the purpose of this article is to critically examine its potential value in the discourse of organizations and management. The article starts with a discussion of the concept of postmodernism, showing that it is used; as an indicator of the present epoch (the postmodern age or condition), as a way of capturing a contemporary movement in the arts and literature (an “ism”), and finally as a particular mode of discourse. With the help of some of the basic postmodern assumptions and concepts, the article then proceeds to a review of contemporary Swedish organization and management theory and praxis. The review shows that the present situation can be characterized by the deconstruction of organization structures, the rejection of grand strategies, an emphasis on expressivism and the importance of coding. In the last section of the article the usefulness of the postmodern perspective for managerial purposes is discussed. It is also claimed that parallel with this deconstruction of organization structures and positive norms, it is possible to discern the reconstruction of social and cultural values developed in an open discourse and resulting in collective reason — and morals.

  • Mergers, MNES and innovation - The need for new research approaches
  • 2003
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 19:2, s. 173-191
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A merger wave on an unprecedented scale has recently been sweeping through the Western world. Many studies have demonstrated the unimpressive economic outcome of most mergers. This article argues that an important reason for disappointing long-term performance is the underestimated difficulties of integrating idiosyncratic technologies in unified product platforms. Instead of focusing on new product development, engineers and designers are drawn into lengthy harmonisation issues. An expanded research agenda is proposed, including the role of special interests in driving merger proposals, the impact of mergers on engineering creativity and innovation, and the identification of industries in which firm trajectories of scale and size, ultimately ending in mergers can be compared with the alternative dynamics of de-mergers, knowledge-based networks and research-based start-ups. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. • Con-versing on Management's Public Place
  • 1990
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 6:4, s. 285-307
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The postmodern condition denotes a state in which the relativization of the knowledge and truth attached to the discourses of the social sciences appears to be provoking growing frustration and discontent. The emerging postmodern discourses represent this discontent, while at the same time underlining the problem of the ontological human knowledge. This article is an attempt to introduce the con-versational mode of knowing to the public place of management, with distanceas a fundamental ingredient. The aim is to see the present as remarkable, and management and organizations as peculiar practices to be problematized not naturalized, to situate current “truths” contextually and temporally, and to trace their correlated economies and emergence. The article also explores the significance of this problematique and discusses the contribution of the writings of some of the major postmodern thinkers.

  • Budget effectiveness in multinational companies : An empirical examination of environmental interaction on cognitive and affective effects of two dimensions of budgetary participation
  • 1993
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - Oxford, UK : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 9:4, s. 299-316
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study examines the interaction between two dimensions of budgetary participation and environmental dynamism on perceptions of budget effectiveness in multinational companies. Unique features are dichotomies of: (i) domestic and foreign subunits; (ii) two dimensions of budget participation, communication and influence; and (iii) two facets of effectiveness perceptions, higher level involvement and outcomes of budget process. Results show that benefits of budgetary participation are limited and not consistent. Significant differences between foreign and domestic subunits are apparent. The primary perceived benefits are associated with communication. Budget influence is associated with positive perceptions of top-level involvement in foreign subunits but negative perceptions of outcomes of budget process in both domestic and foreign subunits.

  • The production of outstanding leadership — an analysis of leadership images in the Swedish media
  • 2001
  • In: Scandinavian journal of management. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1873-3387 .- 0956-5221. ; 17:1, s. 67-85
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper the constructive and ideological aspects of (business) journalism provide the starting point for an exploration of the images of (outstanding) leadership (re)produced in the Swedish printed media. Using an ethnographic semantics method, articles in five major Swedish publications during two separate weeks were scanned, selected and analysed, resulting in 853 media statements about leadership subsumed under 60 leadership categories. These statements were further categorised and analysed, resulting in 12 underlying leadership themes that together suggest a dominant implicit model of leadership. The results were found to be consistent to some extent with central aspects of a “Swedish leadership style” as reported in previous studies, but they also gave rise to some interesting paradoxes. These paradoxes were partly resolved by introducing a distinction between leadership in a political as opposed to a business context. The analysis shows that institutional contexts seem to generate different implicit models of leadership, but within the same national framework. Excellent leadership is evidently exercised and enacted as an expression of socially constructed institutions and culturally grounded values.

  • Conformity or divergence in describing the business concept and profitability
  • 1993
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 9:4, s. 265-282
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The relationship between conformity or divergence in the way CEOs and chief financial officers describe the business concept, and profitability, was studied in 20 firms in one industry. Measures were obtained for firm size, profitability, degree of conformity, organizational stability, product development and the CEO's influence on strategic decisions. Controlling for the effect of size, the relationship was analysed in stepwise multiple regression analyses. Conformity was positively correlated to profitability in stable organizations, and (weakly) to divergence in unstable ones. These findings are consistent with those reported in studies of top management team consensus and performance, which suggest that environmental turbulence has a moderating effect on the relationship. It is concluded that environmental contingency factors affect the conformity-profitability relationship by way of organizational processes. Consequently, differences in organizational stability should be taken into account in studying the impact of environmental conditions on this relationship.
