  • Nursing, bedside care, and the organization of expert knowledge : Professional work as agencement
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 36:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Professional work such as nursing has traditionally been examined as being localized in the individual’s body where professional know-how and skills are residing in the cognitive faculties and in embodied action. Contrary to such a view, the concept of agencement, recently used in the social study of finance, underlines that agency is in the contemporary technoscientifically determined times of necessity distributed and includes a variety of tempospatially distributed resources. Reporting a study nursing work in a leukemia ward in a Swedish regional hospital, it is demonstrated that the conventional view of nursing as primarily being bedside care is only accommodating a subset of the totality of the nurses’ work. In addition to face-to-face care and patient interaction, nursing work is the mobilization of a great number of actors with different domains of expertise to safeguard the health care status of the patient. Speaking of nursing work as agencement is opening up for alternative and more accurate understandings of nursing work in an increasingly technologically determined health care system. © 2020

  • International expertise and local know-how in the trading zone
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 28:4, s. 340-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The management of risk and crises is increasingly seen as a matter of mobilizing formal, rational and calculative systems. Still, the capacity to understand and evaluate the socialcontext within which risk and crises are embedded is of great importance. Examining the case ofthe outbreak of Marburg haemorrhagic fever in Angola in 2004—2005, the concept of trading zoneis proposed as a mechanism bridging international expertise (in this case, that of the medicalexperts of the World Health Organization) and the local actors’ (Angolan health care workers, elders, etc.) understandings of the needs and demands of the community. Recognizing that risksare by definition impossible to fully anticipate, management practice, as part of organizingshould emphasize not only rational systems for monitoring and controlling risk and crises, but alsothe value of including trading zones and a metacode as a pidgin that facilitates collaborationbetween heterogeneous groups in such zones, each understanding their reality based on local, cultural codes.

  • Making it work in free agent work: The coping practices of Swedish freelance journalists
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 35:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of post-industrial work have shown how workers are increasingly shouldering the risk of and the responsibility for social protection, work shortages, professional training, and securing a stream of continuous incoming work. This study of Swedish freelance journalists examines how these free agents cope with a situation whereby the need exists to actively bear the full responsibility for attracting and contracting, producing, and billing their work as journalists. The empirical material shows how freelancers engage in various coping practices to secure both sufficient amounts of work and the accompanying economic compensation. Freelancers who “make it work” are often those managing to embed themselves in long-standing relationships with clients and colleagues, thus ensuring a long-term work horizon and a steady income. Even so, the inherent “responsibilization” of contemporary work is amplified and intensified by the freelance work mode. This study makes two contributions: Firstly, it provides knowledge of free agent work in a Swedish context, a national setting that is often presumed to be a “role model” for good working conditions. Secondly, it highlights the specifics of managing work that entails a continuous stream of sequential and parallel assignments of limited duration and the ongoing “employment management work” this entails as regards making sure assignments keep “coming in”.

  • Consecrating video games as cultural artifacts: Intellectual legitimation as a source of industry renewal
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 34:1, s. 22-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The video games industry, one of the fastest growing creative industries and now engaging larger proportions of populations as smartphones and tablets achieve wider use, seeks to enhance its institutional legitimacy in order to further exploit the new economic possibilities provided by, for example, portable digital media and their market penetration. This strategy is based on a form of consecration, a portrayal of video games as cultural artifacts, i.e., objects carrying a wider cultural and aesthetic significance than merely being a form of entertainment. In order to consecrate the video game, the industry relies on video game reviewers and journalists. This strategy, rooted in market opportunity recognition, challenges some of the conventional wisdom of the industry, the gamer community, and the inherited mainstream media view. As a consequence, institutional legitimacy is not easily acquired or earned since historical conditions and path-dependencies also matter in high-pace industries such as the video game industry. © 2017

  • Scholarly reading as professional practice: A reappraisal
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 32:3, s. 121-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the present university governance model, emphasizing calculative practices based on e.g., bibliographic publication data, scholarly reading is easily downplayed as an inherited privilege not of necessity being conducive to either academic success, nor scholarly recognition. In contrast, by advocating scholarly reading as a centrally located professional practice in scholarly communities, this article emphasizes that scholarly reading is the primus motor of academic knowledge production. To discredit scholarly reading as what e.g., directs attention away from more pressing academic concerns within the extant governance model thus undermines the long-term commitment to scholarly know-how and expertise. Therefore, a more detailed and nuanced debate regarding the practices of academic knowledge production, including the role of scholarly reading, is needed.

  • The mundanity of cost cutting: The value of small wins in affordable housing production
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 39:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Regardless of the best intentions to address the issue among policy makers, affordable housing remains one of the most underprovided assets in advanced economies, otherwise characterized by an ample supply of product offerings. The paper addressed the question of how affordable housing can be provided on basis of new housing production. The study is premised on the theoretical proposition that excellence is not primarily a matter of working "harder" or "smarter" than competitors do, but is rather an effect of small, yet discernable qualitative changes (being the basis for the management of the "mundanity of excellence") that generate benefits and returns in excess of what may be originally expected. The value of such "small wins" are of general relevance for any organized activity or managerial pursuit. Drawing on a study of two low-cost producers operating in the Swedish market and (in one of the cases) abroad, it is shown that to make newly produced homes affordable (defined in local terms on basis of documented housing sales and their buying price), the planning, production, and sales cost need to be minimized throughout the whole process. Affordable housing is thus provided on basis of a full organizational and wider institutional commitment to serve households with limited budget headroom, and this work demands a long-term commitment to stated business objectives and enacted housing policies.

  • The softening bureaucracy: Accommodating new research opportunities in the entrepreneurial university
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 26:2, s. 107-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the growing literature on the entrepreneurial university, the divergent attitudes between industry and academy are often put forth as a major obstacle to more fruitful collaborations. This paper presents a study of a major Scandinavian technical university (referred to with the pseudonym UniTech), suggesting that the organization of such collaborations is perhaps a more substantial challenge for the entrepreneurial university. Drawing on a body of literature that addresses bureaucratic and post-bureaucratic organization forms, it is suggested that the entrepreneurial university could emerge as a soft bureaucracy, that is, a hybrid organization form comprising both bureaucratic and post-bureaucratic elements. While the soft bureaucracy organization form offers distinct opportunities, it also demands the sacrificing of some bureaucratic features such as full transparency and the predictability of operations. As a consequence, the entrepreneurial university needs to institute a number of mechanisms and procedures that structure and guide its day-to-day work, and nourish an attitude whereby a certain degree of ambiguity can be tolerated. • Theorizing as scholarly meaning-making practice: The value of a pragmatist theory of theorizing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 38:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Theorizing is widely recognized as a key activity or process in scholarly research work. In many cases, theorizing is assumed to be part of the scholar's analytical capacity, but there is a shortage of comprehensive explanations for how theorizing as practice actually generates the intersubjective meaning that is the primary purpose of using theory to describe and explain the empirical material. Drawing on pragmatist analytical philosophy and the idea that meaning is intersubjectively constituted within the semantics of everyday language, being accessible to all humans sharing a language, this article formulates a theory of theorizing that does not stop with the affirmative account that theorizing is a process that is contingent on personal beliefs and preferences. A theory of theorizing needs to provide a plausible ground for how empirical materials are described on basis of vocabularies that gradually shift from being more closely related to an everyday use of vernacular language, to more technically oriented descriptions that include theoretical concepts and categories. Based on these premises, preferably to be further developed, a theory of theorizing that demystifies how theory is introduced when analyzing empirical data is presented.
