  • Suspended polarization beam splitter on silicon-on-insulator
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 1094-4087. ; 26:3, s. 2675-2681
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polarization handling in suspended silicon photonics has the potential to enable new applications in fields such as optomechanics, photonic microelectromechanical systems, and mid-infrared photonics. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a suspended polarization beam splitter on a silicon-on-insulator waveguide platform, based on an asymmetric directional coupler. Our device presents polarization extinction ratios above 10 and 15 dB, and insertion losses below 5 and 1 dB, for TM and TE polarized input, respectively, across a 40 nm wavelength range at 1550 nm, with a device length below 8 µm. These results make our suspended polarization beam splitter a promising building block for future systems based on polarization diversity suspended photonics.

  • Long-haul coherent communications using microresonator-based frequency combs
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 25:22, s. 26678-26688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microresonator-based frequency combs are strong contenders as light sources for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). Recent experiments have shown the potential of microresonator combs for replacing a multitude of WDM lasers with a single laser-pumped device. Previous demonstrations have however focused on short-distance few-span links reaching an impressive throughput at the expense of transmission distance. Here we report the first long-haul coherent communication demonstration using a microresonator-based comb source. We modulated polarization multiplexed (PM) quadrature phase-shift keying-data onto the comb lines allowing transmission over more than 6300 km in a single-mode fiber. In a second experiment, we reached beyond 700 km with the PM 16 quadrature amplitude modulation format. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent the longest fiber transmission ever achieved using an integrated comb source.

  • On the limits of digital back-propagation in the presence of transceiver noise
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 25:4, s. 4564-4578
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017, OSA - The Optical Society. All rights reserved. This paper investigates the impact of transceiver noise on the performance of digital back-propagation (DBP). A generalized expression to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) obtained using DBP in the presence of transceiver noise is described. This new expression correctly accounts for the nonlinear beating between the transceiver noise and the signal in the optical fiber transmission link. The transceiver noise-signal nonlinear beating has been identified as the main reason for the discrepancy between predicted and practical performance of DBP; which has not been previously suggested. This nonlinear beating has been included in the GN model, allowing DBP gains in practical systems to be predicted analytically. Experiments and split-step simulations with and without polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) in the transmission link have been performed. The results show that the impact of transceiver noise greatly outweighs that of PMD, and the analytical expressions are confirmed by the numerical simulations.

  • Thermal lensing effects on lateral leakage in GaN-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser cavities
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 25:9, s. 9556-9568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lateral leakage of light has been identified as a detrimental loss source in many suggested and experimentally realized GaN-based VCSELs. In the present work we include thermal effects to realistically account for the substantial Joule heating in these devices. In contrast to what could be expected from the previous results, the induced thermal lensing does not make antiguided cavities more positively guided, so that they approach the unguided regime with extremely high lateral leakage. Rather, thermal lensing strongly suppresses lateral leakage for both antiguided and guided cavities. This is explained in terms of lowered launch of power from the central part of the cavity and/or lower total internal reflection in the peripheral part; the former effect is active in all cavities whereas the latter only contributes to the very strongly reduced leakage in weakly antiguided cavities. Thermal lensing suppresses lateral leakage both for the fundamental and the first higher order mode, but a strong modal discrimination is still achieved for the antiguided cavities. Thus, strongly antiguided cavities could be used to achieve single-mode devices, but at the cost of slightly higher threshold gain and stronger temperature dependent performance characteristics.

  • On nonlinearly-induced noise in single-channel optical links with digital backpropagation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 21:22, s. 26376-26386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the performance limits of electronic chromatic dispersion compensation (EDC) and digital backpropagation (DBP) for a single-channel non-dispersion-managed fiber-optical link. A known analytical method to derive the performance of the system with EDC is extended to derive a first-order approximation for the performance of the system with DBP. In contrast to the cubic growth of the variance of the nonlinear noise-like interference, often called nonlinear noise, with input power for EDC, a quadratic growth is observed with DBP using this approximation. Finally, we provide numerical results to verify the accuracy of the proposed approach and compare it with existing analytical models.

  • Bayesian filtering framework for noise characterization of frequency combs
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 28:9, s. 13949-13964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amplitude and phase noise correlation matrices are of fundamental importance for studying noise properties of frequency combs. They include information about the origin of noise sources as well as the scaling and correlation of the noise across the comb lines. These matrices provide an insight that is essential for obtaining low-noise performance which is important for, e.g., applications in optical communication, low–noise microwave signal generation, and distance measurements. Estimation of amplitude and phase noise correlation matrices requires highly–accurate measurement technique which can distinguishes between noise sources coming from the frequency comb and the measurement system itself. Bayesian filtering provides a theoretically optimum approach for filtering of measurement noise and thereby, the most accurate measurement of phase and amplitude noise. In this paper, a novel Bayesian filtering based framework for joint estimation of amplitude and phase noise of multiple frequency comb lines is proposed, and demonstrated for phase noise characterization. Compared to the conventional approaches, that do not employ any measurement noise filtering, the proposed approach provides significantly more accurate measurements of correlation matrices, operates over a wide range of signal–to–noise–ratios and gives an insight into comb’s dynamics at short scales (<10−8 s). © 2020 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

  • Phase-sensitive amplifier link with distributed Raman amplification
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 26:16, s. 19854-19863
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate long-haul transmission using a hybrid amplifier approach combining distributed Raman amplification and lumped phase-sensitive amplification. Aside from the well-known resulting SNR improvement, distributed Raman amplification is included in an effort to improve the nonlinearity mitigation capability of the phase-sensitive amplifiers. When changing from phase-insensitive operation to phase-sensitive operation in a link employing distributed Raman amplification, the transmission reach at BER = 10−3is increased from 15 to 44 spans of length 81 km while simultaneously increasing the optimal launch power by 2 dB.

  • Comparison of 128-SP-QAM and PM-16QAM in long-haul WDM transmission
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 21:16, s. 19269-19279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate 128-level set-partitioning quadrature amplitude modulation (128-SP-QAM) experimentally and compare the performance to polarization-multiplexed 16QAM both at the same bit rate and at the same symbol rate. Using a recirculating loop we study both single channel and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission and demonstrate a reach of up to 2680 km at a bit-error rate of 10−3 for 128-SP-QAM. We confirm that 128-SP-QAM has an increased sensitivity compared to PM-16QAM and show that the maximum transmission distance can be increased by more than 50 % at the same bit rate for both single channel and WDM transmission. We also investigate the performance at the same symbol rate as a possible fall back solution in a degrading link.

  • Self-homodyne 24×32-QAM superchannel receiver enabled by all-optical comb regeneration using Brillouin amplification
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : The Optical Society. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 24:26, s. 29714-29723
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate and characterize an all-optical self-homodyne (SH) frequency superchannel enabled by comb regeneration at the receiver. In order to generate the superchannel, we use a frequency comb with 26 carriers spaced by 25 GHz at the transmitter, from which 24 carriers are modulated with polarization-multiplexed 32 quadrature amplitude modulation (PM 32-QAM) data. To enable comb regeneration at the receiver side, the two central carriers remain unmodulated. High fidelity comb regeneration is achieved by filtering the two unmodulated carriers with an approximately 25 MHz wide optical filter based on Brillouin amplification before a parametric mixer. The carriers from the regenerated comb are then used as local oscillator for SH detection. We demonstrate that all 24 carriers can be detected with an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty lower than 2.5 dB in a back-to-back scenario. We also demonstrate that the whole superchannel can be transmitted through 120 km of single-mode fiber (SMF) and be detected with bit-error rate (BER) below 0.015.
