  • On nonlinearly-induced noise in single-channel optical links with digital backpropagation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 21:22, s. 26376-26386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the performance limits of electronic chromatic dispersion compensation (EDC) and digital backpropagation (DBP) for a single-channel non-dispersion-managed fiber-optical link. A known analytical method to derive the performance of the system with EDC is extended to derive a first-order approximation for the performance of the system with DBP. In contrast to the cubic growth of the variance of the nonlinear noise-like interference, often called nonlinear noise, with input power for EDC, a quadratic growth is observed with DBP using this approximation. Finally, we provide numerical results to verify the accuracy of the proposed approach and compare it with existing analytical models.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is now fifty years since the original observation of second harmonic generation ushered in the field of nonlinear optics, close on the heels of the invention of the laser. This feature issue celebrates this anniversary with papers that span the range from new nonlinear optical materials, through the increasingly novel methods that have been developed for phase matching, to emerging areas such as nonlinear metamaterials and plasmonic enhancement of optical properties. It is clear that the next fifty years of nonlinear optics will witness a proliferation of new applications with increasing technological impact.

  • Bayesian filtering framework for noise characterization of frequency combs
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 28:9, s. 13949-13964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amplitude and phase noise correlation matrices are of fundamental importance for studying noise properties of frequency combs. They include information about the origin of noise sources as well as the scaling and correlation of the noise across the comb lines. These matrices provide an insight that is essential for obtaining low-noise performance which is important for, e.g., applications in optical communication, low–noise microwave signal generation, and distance measurements. Estimation of amplitude and phase noise correlation matrices requires highly–accurate measurement technique which can distinguishes between noise sources coming from the frequency comb and the measurement system itself. Bayesian filtering provides a theoretically optimum approach for filtering of measurement noise and thereby, the most accurate measurement of phase and amplitude noise. In this paper, a novel Bayesian filtering based framework for joint estimation of amplitude and phase noise of multiple frequency comb lines is proposed, and demonstrated for phase noise characterization. Compared to the conventional approaches, that do not employ any measurement noise filtering, the proposed approach provides significantly more accurate measurements of correlation matrices, operates over a wide range of signal–to–noise–ratios and gives an insight into comb’s dynamics at short scales (<10−8 s). © 2020 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

  • Bandwidth-efficient phase modulation techniques for Stimulated Brillouin Scattering suppression in fiber optic parametric amplifiers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 18:17, s. 18138-18150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two novel bandwidth efficient pump-dithering Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) suppression techniques are introduced. The techniques employ a frequency-hopped chirp and an RF noise source to impart phase modulation on the pumps of a two pump Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier (FOPA). The effectiveness of the introduced techniques is confirmed by measurements of the SBS threshold increase and the associated improvements relative to the current state of the art. Additionally, the effect on the idler signal integrity is presented as measured following amplification from a two pump FOPA employing both techniques. The measured 0.8 dB penalty with pumps dithered by an RF noise source, after accruing 160ps/nm of dispersion with 38 dB conversion gain in a two-pump FOPA is the lowest reported to date.

  • Noise beating in hybrid phase-sensitive amplifier systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : The Optical Society. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 22:5, s. 5762-5771
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the effect of noise loading in a hybrid phase-sensitive amplifier system, analyzing the effect of noise beating between the signal and idler waves coupled in a parametric amplifier. Through analyzing input and output optical signal to noise ratios, we find that system performance of a phase-sensitive amplifier is 3 to 6 dB improved over a phase-insensitive amplifier, depending on the ratio of loaded noise power to that of vacuum fluctuations. • Digital backpropagation accounting for polarization-mode dispersion
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 25:3, s. 1903-1915
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital backpropagation (DBP) is a promising digital-domain technique to mitigate Kerr-induced nonlinear interference. While it successfully removes deterministic signal-signal interactions, the performance of ideal DBP is limited by stochastic effects, such as polarizationmode dispersion (PMD). In this paper, we consider an ideal full-field DBP implementation and modify it to additionally account for PMD; reversing the PMD effects in the backward propagation by passing the reverse propagated signal also through PMD sections, which concatenated equal the inverse of the PMD in the forward propagation. These PMD sections are calculated analytically at the receiver based on the total accumulated PMD of the link estimated from channel equalizers. Numerical simulations show that, accounting for nonlinear polarization-related interactions in the modified DBP algorithm, additional signal-to-noise ratio gains of 1.1 dB are obtained for transmission over 1000 km.

  • Mitigation of nonlinear distortion in hybrid Raman/phase-sensitive amplifier links
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 24:2, s. 888-900
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hybrid systems combining distributed Raman amplification and phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs) are investigated in numerical simulations. We focus on the mitigation of fiber nonlinearities and the impact of the span power map which is also important in systems employing optical phase conjugation or phase-conjugated twin waves. We simulate multi-span PSA links with and without distributed Raman amplification and show that by including distributed Raman amplification, the transmission distance increases more at optimum launch power than in the linear regime. For a 5-channel WDM QPSK PSA-amplified system, we observe a transmission reach increase by a factor of 8.1 by including ideal distributed Raman amplification.

  • Mitigation of nonlinearities using conjugate data repetition
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 23:3, s. 2392-2402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate a time-domain implementation of generalized phase-conjugated twin waves which we call conjugate data repetition. A theory based on time-domain perturbation analysis explaining the mitigation of nonlinear effects is provided, and the concept is evaluated using numerical simulations. Compared to PM-QPSK at the same channel bit rate, the single-channel transmission reach in a conventional system with standard single-mode fiber of conjugate data repetition-QPSK is increased by approximately a factor of 2.
