  • Optical creation and erasure of the linear electrooptical effect in silica fiber
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 1094-4087. ; 23:14, s. 18060-18069
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the creation and erasure of the linear electrooptical effect in silicate fibers by optical poling. Carriers are released by exposure to green light and displaced with simultaneous application of an internal dc field. The second order nonlinear coefficient induced grows with poling bias. The field recorded (similar to 10(8) V/m) is comparable to that obtained through classical thermal poling of fibers. In the regime studied here, the second-order nonlinearity induced (similar to 0.06 pm/V) is limited by the field applied during poling (1.2 x 10(8) V/m). Optical erasure with high-power green light alone is very efficient. The dynamics of the writing and erasing process is discussed, and the two dimensional (2D) field distribution across the fiber is simulated. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

  • Study of thermally poled fibers with a two-dimensional model
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 22:15, s. 17700-17715
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A two-dimensional (2D) numerical model is implemented to describe the movement of ions under thermal poling for the specific case of optical fibers. Three types of cations are considered (representing Na+, Li+ and H3O+) of different mobility values. A cross-sectional map of the carrier concentration is obtained as a function of time. The role of the various cations is investigated. The assumptions of the model are validated by comparing the predictions to experimental data of the time evolution of the nonlinearity induced. A variational analysis of poling parameters including temperature, poling voltage, sign of the bias potential and initial ionic concentrations is performed for a particular fiber geometry. The analysis allows identifying the impact of these parameters on the induced second-order nonlinearity in poled fibers.

  • Pulse selection at 1 MHz with electrooptic fiber switch
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:9, s. 9465-9470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two 78-cm long electrooptic fibers with nonlinear coefficient. chi((2)) similar to 0.26 pm/V are used in a Sagnac loop for pulse selection at up to 1 MHz repetition rate. Laser pulses of 1.5 mu m wavelength arriving at every 140 ns are selected with an extinction ratio as high as -30 dB. The arrangement is entirely based on silica fiber.

  • Soliton generation from an actively mode-locked fiber laser incorporating an electro-optic fiber modulator
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:3, s. 2905-2910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work demonstrates an actively mode-locked fiber laser operating in soliton regime and employing an all-fiber electro-optic modulator. Nonlinear polarization rotation is utilized for femtosecond pulse generation. Stable operation of the all-fiber ring laser is readily achieved at a fundamental repetition rate of 2.6 MHz and produces 460 fs pulses with a spectral bandwidth of 5.3 nm.

  • Optical poling by means of electrical corona discharge
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 30:12, s. 20605-20613
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical corona discharge is employed in this work to deposit ions on the surface of an optical fiber, creating a strong electric field that is used for poling. Green laser light propagating in the core frees photocarriers that are displaced by the poling field. The technique presented can induce a higher optical nonlinearity than previously obtained in traditional optical poling with internal metal electrodes. To date, a maximum second order nonlinearity 0.13 pm/V has been achieved for a 15 kV corona discharge bias.

  • Nanosecond monolithic Mach-Zehnder fiber switch
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 20:28, s. 29309-29318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An electrically controlled high-speed all-fiber switch is investigated. It is based on a monolithic Mach-Zehnder interferometer using a Gemini fiber. The fiber is provided with internal electrodes for active control of the phase using high-voltage electrical pulses. The demonstrated switching speed is 20 ns. The monolithic design guarantees that the off- and on-states are attained simultaneously for a broad range of wavelengths (50 nm). The interferometer can be switched-off using a second electrode, providing a 15 ns long optical pulse.

  • Birefringence switching of Bragg gratings in fibers with internal electrodes
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 16:11, s. 8229-8235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fiber Bragg grating was written in a side-hole fiber with internal metal alloy electrodes. The initial geometrical birefringence of this fiber gives rise to two Bragg resonances separated by 43 pm. Nanosecond risetime current pulses of up to 23 A were applied to the metal electrode, which heated and expanded rapidly. This caused mechanical stress in the fiber on a nanosecond scale, resulting in a negative shift of the Bragg wavelength peak for the fast axis mode, and positive but smaller shift for the slow axis mode. The fast change increased the peak separation to similar to 143 pm, corresponding to an increase in birefringence from 4.0 x 10(-5) to 1.3 x 10(-4). Both peaks subsequently experienced a red-shift due to the relaxation of mechanical stress and the increasing core temperature transferred from the metal in many microseconds. Simulations give accurate description of the experimental results.

  • Nanosecond switching of fiber Bragg gratings
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 15:22, s. 14948-14953
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A FBG was written in a two-hole fiber with internal alloy electrodes. Nanosecond high current pulses cause metal expansion, increase birefringence and tune the gratings with a response time of 29 ns. This short length, low loss, all-spliced high-speed wavelength switching devices described here has potential use in Q-switching fiber laser.
