  • Detailed characterization of a
fiber-optic parametric amplifier in phase-sensitive and phase-insensitive operation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 18:5, s. 4130-4137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We experimentally demonstrate a single-pumped, non-degenerate phase-sensitive parametric amplifier with a precise control of phase and amplitude of the in-going waves and investigate in detail its gain, attenuation and saturation properties in comparison with operation in phase insensitive amplifier (PIA) mode. We experimentally observe the variation of the gain and attenuation as a function of the relative phase, pump power and the signal-idler power ratio. The phase sensitive gain spectrum is studied over a 24 nm symmetrical bandwidth and we achieve a maximum phase sensitive amplification (PSA) gain of 33 dB. A departure from the theoretical maximum attenuation as the gain increases is observed and explained.

  • Field-quadrature and photon-number correlations produced by parametric processes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 18:19, s. 19792-19823
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a previous paper [Opt. Express 13, 4986 (2005)], formulas were derived for the field-quadrature and photon-number variances produced by multiple-mode parametric processes. In this paper, formulas are derived for the quadrature and number correlations. The number formulas are used to analyze the properties of basic devices, such as two-mode amplifiers, attenuators and frequency convertors, and composite systems made from these devices, such as cascaded parametric amplifiers and communication links. Amplifiers generate idlers that are correlated with the amplified signals, or correlate pre-existing pairs of modes, whereas attenuators decorrelate pre-existing modes. Both types of device modify the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the modes on which they act. Amplifiers decrease or increase the mode SNRs, depending on whether they are operated in phase-insensitive (PI) or phase-sensitive (PS) manners, respectively, whereas attenuators always decrease these SNRs. Two-mode PS links are sequences of transmission fibers (attenuators) followed by two-mode PS amplifiers. Not only do these PS links have noise figures that are 6-dB lower than those of the corresponding PI links, they also produce idlers that are (almost) completely correlated with the signals. By detecting the signals and idlers, one can eliminate the effects of electronic noise in the detectors.

  • Higher-capacity communication links based on two-mode phase-sensitive amplifiers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 19:13, s. 11977-11991
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical communication links are usually made with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, which amplify the signal waves in a phase-insensitive (PI) manner. They can also be made with parametric fiber amplifiers, in which the signal waves interact with idler waves. If information is transmitted using only the signals, parametric amplifiers are PI and their noise figures are comparable to those of erbium amplifiers. However, transmitting correlated information in the signals and idlers, or copying the signals prior to transmission, allows parametric amplifiers to be phase-sensitive (PS), which lowers their noise figures. The information capacities of two-mode PS links exceed those of the corresponding PI links by 2 b/s-Hz.

  • Injection locking-based pump recovery for phase-sensitive amplified links
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : The Optical Society. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 21:12, s. 14512-14529
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An injection locking-based pump recovery system for phase-sensitive amplified links, capable of handling 40 dB effective span loss, is demonstrated. Measurements with 10 GBd DQPSK signals show penalty-free recovery of a pump wave, phase modulated with two sinusoidal RF-tones at 0.1 GHz and 0.3 GHz, with 64 dB amplification. The operating power limit for the pump recovery system is experimentally investigated and is governed by the noise transfer and phase modulation transfer characteristics of the injection-locked laser. The corresponding link penalties are explained and quantified. This system enables, for the first time, WDM compatible phase-sensitive amplified links over significant lengths.

  • Full characterization of the signal and idler noise figure spectra in single-pumped fiber optical parametric amplifiers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 18:3, s. 2884-2893
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the first time, four different noise sources, which are amplified quantum noise, Raman phonon seeded excess noise, pump transferred noise (PTN), and pump residual noise, are considered simultaneously to model the wavelength-dependent noise figure in a single-pumped fiber optical parametric amplifier. An asymmetric signal NF spectrum induced by both Raman phonon seeded excess noise and Raman gain modified PTN is measured in the electrical domain. Theoretical results agree very well with the experimental data. The idler NF spectrum is also analyzed and measured, which shows a more symmetric profile.

  • Noise performance of optical fiber transmission links that use non-degenerate cascaded phase-sensitive amplifiers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 18:15, s. 15426-15439
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on semi-classical theory, the noise performance of a multispan fiber optical transmission system employing a cascaded phaseinsensitive amplifier (PIA) and phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs) is investigated. Compared with the pure-PIA and pure-PSA based in-line amplification schemes, the copier + PSA scheme is found to improve the system NF by up to 6 and 3 dB, respectively, in an optimized long-haul fiber link, In addition, this cascaded configuration will significantly relax the requirement for accurate phase- and wavelength-locking which is rigorously needed in the pure-PSA configuration, This scheme is also modulation-format independent. As a proof of concept, the NF of a fiber parametric amplifier based copier + PSA cascade with inter-stage attenuation representing the fiber link is measured, which shows a 1.8-dB total NF improvement over the conventional EDFA cascade. © 2010 Optical Society of America.
