  • Atomistic spin dynamics of low-dimensional magnets
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the magnetic properties of a range of low-dimensional ferromagnets using a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. This approach allows us to evaluate the ground state and finite temperature properties of experimentally well characterized systems such as Co/Cu(111), Co/Cu(001), Fe/Cu(001) and Fe/W(110), for different thicknesses of the magnetic layer. We compare our calculated spin wave spectra with experimental data available in the literature, and find a good quantitative agreement. We also predict magnon spectra for systems for which no experimental data exist at the moment, and estimate the role of temperature effects.

  • First-principles studies of the Gilbert damping and exchange interactions for half-metallic Heuslers alloys
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 93:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heusler alloys have been intensively studied due to the wide variety of properties that they exhibit. One of these properties is of particular interest for technological applications, i.e., the fact that some Heusler alloys are half-metallic. In the following, a systematic study of the magnetic properties of three different Heusler families Co(2)MnZ, Co(2)FeZ, and Mn(2)VZ with Z = (Al, Si, Ga, Ge) is performed. A key aspect is the determination of the Gilbert damping from first-principles calculations, with special focus on the role played by different approximations, the effect that substitutional disorder and temperature effects. Heisenberg exchange interactions and critical temperature for the alloys are also calculated as well as magnon dispersion relations for representative systems, the ferromagnetic Co2FeSi and the ferrimagnetic Mn2VAl. Correlation effects beyond standard density-functional theory are treated using both the local spin density approximation including the Hubbard U and the local spin density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory approximation, which allows one to determine if dynamical self-energy corrections can remedy some of the inconsistencies which were previously reported for these alloys.

  • Crystal and magnetic structure of Mn3IrSi
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 69:5, s. 054422-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new ternary Ir-Mn-Si phase with stoichiometry Mn3IrSi has been synthesized and found to crystallize in the cubic AlAu4-type structure, space group P213 with Z=4, which is an ordered form of the β-Mn structure. The unit cell dimension was determined by x-ray powder diffraction to a=6.4973(3)Å. In addition to the crystal structure, we have determined the magnetic structure and properties using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data. A complex noncollinear magnetic structure is found, with magnetic moments of 2.97(4)μB at 10 K only on the Mn atoms. The crystal structure consists of a triangular network built up by Mn atoms, on which the moments are rotated 120° around the triangle axes. The magnetic unit cell is the same as the crystallographic and carries no net magnetic moment. The Néel temperature was determined to be 210 K. A first-principles study, based on density functional theory in a general noncollinear formulation, reproduces the experimental results with good agreement. The observed magnetic structure is argued to be the result of frustration of antiferromagnetic couplings by the triangular geometry.

  • Theoretical simulations of oxygen K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of kaolinite
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 95:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the oxygen K edge were combined with theoretical spectrum simulations, based on periodic density functional theory and nuclear quantum dynamics, to investigate the electronic structure and chemical bonding in kaolinite Al2Si2O5(OH)(4). We simulated NEXAFS spectra of all crystallographically inequivalent oxygen atoms in the crystal and RIXS spectra of the hydroxyl groups. Detailed insight into the ground-state potential energy surface of the electronic states involved in the RIXS process were accessed by analyzing the vibrational excitations, induced by the core excitation, in quasielastic scattering back to the electronic ground state. In particular, we find that the NEXAFS pre-edge is dominated by features related to OH groups within the silica and alumina sheets, and that the vibrational progression in RIXS can be used to selectively probe vibrational modes of this subclass of OH groups. The signal is dominated by the OH stretching mode, but also other lower vibrational degrees of freedom, mainly hindered rotational modes, contribute to the RIXS signal.

  • Anomalous vibrational dynamics in the Mg2Zn11 phase
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 83:14, s. 144202-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the structure and the lattice dynamics in the complex metallic alloy Mg2Zn11, by means of neutron and x-ray scattering, as well as ab initio and empirical potential calculations. Mg2Zn11 can be seen as an intermediate step in structural complexity between the simple Laves-phase MgZn2 on one side, and the complex 1/1 approximants and quasicrystals ZnMgAl and Zn(Mg)Sc on the other. The structure can be described as a cubic packing of a triacontahedron whose center is partially occupied by a Zn atom. This partially occupied site turned out to play a major role in understanding the lattice dynamics. Data from inelastic neutron scattering evidence a Van Hove singularity in the vibrational spectrum of Mg2Zn11 for an energy as low as 4.5 meV, which is a unique feature for a nearly-close-packed metallic alloy. This corresponds to a gap opening at the Brillouin zone boundary and an interaction between a low-lying optical branch and an acoustic one, as could be deduced from the dispersion relation measured by inelastic x-ray scattering. Second, the measured phonon density of states exhibits many maxima, indicating strong mode interactions across the whole energy range. The origin of the low-energy modes in Mg2Zn11 and other features of the vibrational spectra are studied, using both ab initio and empirical potential calculations. A detailed analysis of vibrational eigenmodes is presented, linking features in the vibrational spectrum to atomic motions within structural building blocks.

  • Oxygen-induced step bunching and faceting of Rh(553): Experiment and ab initio calculations
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 74:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we show that the initial oxidation of a Rh(553) surface, a surface vicinal to (111), undergoes step bunching when exposed to oxygen, forming lower-index facets. At a pressure of about 10(-6) mbar and a temperature of 380 degrees C this leads to (331) facets with one-dimensional oxide chains along the steps, coexisting with (111) facets. Further increase of the pressure and temperature results in (111) facets only, covered by an O-Rh-O surface oxide. Our density functional theory calculations provide an atomistic understanding of the observed behavior.

  • Interpretation of van der Waals density functionals
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X .- 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 90:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nonlocal correlation energy in the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method can be interpreted in terms of a coupling of zero-point energies of characteristic modes of semilocal exchange-correlation (xc) holes. These xc holes reflect the internal functional in the framework of the vdW-DF method. We explore the internal xc hole components, showing that they share properties with those of the generalized-gradient approximation. We use these results to illustrate the nonlocality in the vdW-DF description and analyze the vdW-DF formulation of nonlocal correlation.

  • Relative concentration and structure of native defects in GaP
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. ; 72:19, s. 195213-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The native defects in the compound semiconductor GaP have been studied using a pseudopotential Density Functional Theory method in order todetermine their relative concentrations and the most stable charge states. The electronic and atomic structures are presented and the defect concentrations are estimated using calculated formation energies. Relaxation effects are taken into account fully and produce negative-Ucharge transfer levels for V\sS{P}{} and P\sS{Ga}{}. The concentration of V\sS{Ga}{} is in good agreement with the results of positron annihilation experiments. The charge transfer levels presented compare qualitatively well with experiments where available. The effect of stoichiometry on the defect concentrations is also described and is shown to be considerable. The lowest formation energies are found for P\sS{Ga}{+2} in p-type and V\sS{Ga}{-3} in n-type GaP under P-rich conditions, and for Ga\sS{P}{-2} in n-type GaP under Ga-rich conditions. Finally, the finite size errors arising from the use of supercells with periodic boundary conditions are examined.

  • Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the F 1s photoabsorption edge in LiF : Interplay of excitonic and conduction states, and Stokes' doubling
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 70:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The excitation-decay processes at the F 1s photoabsorption edge in LiF crystal are studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy. The Raman-type linear dispersion and the narrowing of the x-ray fluorescence peak are observed at resonant excitation. A theoretical model based on the Kramers-Heisenberg formula describes well the main features in fluorescence spectra and allows one to separate the contributions of the exciton and the conduction states in the scattering spectra. At the same time, the role of the shape of the spectral distribution within the incident radiation is emphasized as being critically sensitive to the number, kind, and onset of the spectral features which finally appear in the scattering spectra at a particular incident photon energy, particularly in the subthreshold excitation region.

  • Statistical error in simulations of Poisson processes : Example of diffusion in solids
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 94:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulations of diffusion in solids often produce poor statistics of diffusion events. We present an analytical expression for the statistical error in ion conductivity obtained in such simulations. The error expression is not restricted to any computational method in particular, but valid in the context of simulation of Poisson processes in general. This analytical error expression is verified numerically for the case of Gd-doped ceria by running a large number of kinetic Monte Carlo calculations.
