  • Crip heroes and social change
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Lambda Nordica. - 1100-2573. ; :1-2, s. 27-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS a critical reading of Robert McRuer’s Crip Theory: cultural signs of queerness and disability (2006), in which the author, a professor of English, explores common ground between disability studies and queer theory. The conjunction of the two has been rare (Grönvik 2008:48; Kafer 2009:291) but does ap- pear in a special edition of the magazine GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies for which McRuer was one of several guest editors (2003). The aim of the present article is two-fold. First, the consequences of McRuer’s choice of empirical data for Crip Theory are analysed. Second, the relevance of Crip Theory for a study on how female athletes with physical impairments relate to their bodies and to the field of sports is examined.

  • Självet och subjektets svårgripbara nödvändighet : utkast till en socialpsykologisk kritik av Judith Butler
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Lambda Nordica. - Huddinge, Sverige : Föreningen Lambda nordica. - 1100-2573 .- 2001-7286. ; 11:4, s. 7-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The self and the elusive necessity of the subject: outline of a social- psychological critique of Judith Butler In her widely cited and criticised Gender trouble, Judith Butler (1990) elaborated the thought that gender needs to be understood as performative – a certain kind of doing behind the bars of a hegemonic heterosexual imperative that governs intelligible bodily configurations. Drawing mainly on psychoanalytical and foucauldian arguments, Butler dwells upon numerous important questions concerning power and subjectivity while arguing that subjects need to conform to the heterosexual matrix in order to gain intelligibility. However, she does not manage to emphasize the importance of situating neither the subject nor the body in a social reality. Due to the problematic and sometimes unclear differentiation between the concepts of performance and performativity as well as the somewhat obscure idea of subjectivity, self and corporeality that are put forward in Butler’s theorizing, it is here argued that her theoretical framework needs to be re-conceptualized from the viewpoint of social psychology. Combining a theoretical framework that draws upon Butler (1990; 1993; 1997a and 1997b) with a symbolic interactionist perspective (Blumer 1969; Mead 1995), this paper aims at locating intersections, gaps and similarities between these rather disparate perspectives. Initiating such a venture, the argument pursued in this paper revolves around the concept of social self and the ways this concept possibly can elaborate Butler’s theory. It is argued that a social psychological take on butlerian thinking can enhance and further elaborate an understanding of the processes involved in the doing of gender.

  • Begærsforskydningens politik Samtaler om selvoplevede begærs- og identitetsforskydninger bland genusstudenter
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Lambda Nordica. - 1100-2573. ; 2011:1, s. 69-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the phenomenon of 'shifts in desire' amongst students of gender studies at five universities in Sweden. Taking its starting point in a fascination of the subversive political potential of challenging the predominant discourse of sexual essentialism it examines which aspects of gender studies my informants attach importance to when relating them to their shifts in desire. The investigation builds on a survey conducted by the author 2007, which revealed that shifts in desire, sexual practices and/or gender identities are relatively common amongst gender studies students. Building on these results the article examines how the 'shifts' are perceived and explained theoretically and politically by the students. The analysis reveals that it is a combination of subversive potential, the norm divergence in the curriculum as well as the 'non-heteronormative' context of gender studies that facilitates the students´ 'shifts in desire'.

  • Culturally queer, silenced in school? Children with LGBTQ parents, and the everyday politics of/in community and school
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Lambda Nordica. Tidskrift för homo/lesbisk/bi/transforskning. - : Föreningen Lambda Nordica. ; 16:2-3, s. 159-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children with lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and/or queer (LGBTQ) parents have received heightened attention during the processes of policy making regarding adoption and donor insemination legislation in Sweden during the 1990s and early 2000s. Yet, very little academic knowledge exists about children and young people in LGBTQ families and their experiences in schools. We engage the idea of "culturally queer" as a potentially useful framework for understanding the experiences of children and young people with LGBTQ parents. School, with its major impact on young people's lives, is one of the sites where family as discourse and practise is negotiated. This is why a group of researchers from Humboldt University, Berlin (Germany), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Lund University (Sweden) are undertaking a study on the school experiences of children and young people with LGBTQ parents. Our first aim is to discuss how these kids are recognized within queer communities. Our second aim is to analyze what we see as a problematic silence in school around children and young people with LGBTQ parents. This is about the powerful and everyday workings of normative understandings of who family should be. Schools and teachers might not see the need to actively include non-normative family-structures in their work. This seemingly innocent-looking process in fact re-constructs ideals of family, childhood, sexuality and gender. It is necessary to actively work against the silencing of kids with LGBTQ parents in the context of school. This is important for these kids; it is equally important for children and young people with heterosexual parents to see that family can be more than mum-dad-child. We see this as a part of the long-established debate in queer theorizing and activism about the meaning and practises of 'family'. We see a need to further theorize the currently ongoing normalization of queer families. At the same time, there is an equally ongoing need for struggle against indirect homophobia and transphobia.

  • Mellan välvilja och förakt : En etnografi av kategoriseringar i staden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Lambda Nordica. - 1100-2573 .- 2001-7286. ; 17:1-2, s. 102-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article examines the benevolence that young people who use wheelchairsencounter from unknown people. Benevolence is considered as a form of compassionthat hides contempt for what is perceived as deviant from the norm. Byusing Sartre’s idea of the stickiness of matter and Young’s concept of ascribedidentities, benevolence is also being studied as something that turns into internalisedself-loathing among the young wheelchair users. Through the twodifferent perspectives, the cultural bases of benevolence are analysed as powerrelations between people.
