  • Som pojkar går och står. Läsning, maskulinitet och genre i Ossian Elgströms pojkböcker : Just as Boys Do. Reading, Masculinity, and Genre in Ossian Elgström’s Books for Boys
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap. - 1104-0556. ; 43:3-4, s. 17-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article seeks to do introduce a significant but largely uncharted motif in relation to the understanding of stories for boys: the experience of reading literature within literature (Gelebte Literatur in der Literatur). While stories for boys often present the boy character as an astute and real-world man-in-embryo, who gravitates away from unnecessary reading, they also includes the reading of adventure stories as an important boyhood experience. Addressing books written for boys by the Swedish author and illustrator Ossian Elgström (1883–1950), this article suggests that reading as a motif occupies a key function in connection to the imaging of masculinity. In part, the experience of reading about male adventure heroes – and the inclination to play the roles of these heroes – evokes hegemonic masculinity as a scheme, shaping how boy characters behave and interact. Moreover, the motif also establishes a meta-fictional layer in the text with an implicit appeal to masculine solidarity. Finally, this article explores how the relation between reading and play in Elgström’s books may be regarded as defining for the adventure-fiction genre as a whole.

  • Våldets pedagogik. Krig och lek i svensk barnboksutgivning vid 1960-talets slut : The Pedagogy of Violence: Children’s Literature in Sweden at the End of the 1960’s
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap. - 1104-0556. ; 43:1, s. 21-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues that the Vietnam War had a massive impact on children’s literature published in Sweden at the end of the 1960’s. Numerous children’s books portrayed the child as confronting the horrifying scenes from the Vietnam War through television news reports. These books indicate the need for a literature that in some way could explain to small children the violence taking place in the surrounding world. The examples provided in this article illustrate the scale of this impact but also the different ways in which authors dealt with the situation. The author’s choice of aesthetic form and genre was deeply influenced by political as well as pedagogical concerns following new conceptions of child care and child development. The understanding of the connection between, on the one hand, violence and aggression and, one the other, children and play was inspired by psychodynamic theories that offered new impulses to the discussion about the function of children’s literature. However, these conceptions of childhood, play and fantasy were to a considerable extent in conflict with not only the demand for a politically engaged and profoundly realistic literature but also the question of how much violence and darkness the young child could take in and deal with.
