  • ”Desire? Who needs desire? Let´s just do it!” : A Qualitative study concerning sexuality and infertility at an Internet support group
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sexual and Relationship Therapy. - : Routledge. - 1468-1994 .- 1468-1749. ; 30:4, s. 433-447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is limited information regarding everyday descriptions of experiences of sexual problems linked to childlessness. This study examines communication specific to sexual issues addressed within internet support groups focused on involuntarily childlessness. Qualitative content analysis of posts from 100 discussion threads regarding infertility and sexuality issues in the Swedish internet forum “difficult to conceive” at http://www.familjeliv.se was carried out. The findings indicate that forum participants sought one another’s support to cope with the new realities of involuntary childlessness which negatively impacted aspects of their sexuality. The posts suggested that performance anxiety adversely affected participants’ perceived sexuality, and goals shifted away from desire and pleasure and became more technical and outcome- focused. Forums revealed details of an altered self-image among both women and men, which generated a feeling of meaninglessness. The online forum constitutes an arena offering both solution-focused and emotional coping support for issues linked to infertility and sexuality. It is imperative that health information regarding infertility and sexuality uses a bio-psychosocial approach including both emotional and sexual aspects of infertility treatment, and not merely medical facts. Both women and men experiencing involuntary childlessness need anticipatory guidance regarding the adverse impact that infertility may have on their sexual functioning and behaviour.

  • French and Swedish teachers' social representations of social workers
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-1457 .- 1468-2664. ; 17:4, s. 491-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaboration on children at risk is essential, but our knowledge about interprofessional collaboration between social workers and educators is limited. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to describe French and Swedish teachers' social representation of social workers; and (2) to compare these social representations. The French sample group is composed of 77 secondary school teachers (of students from 11 to 18 years old), and the Swedish sample group is composed of 94. The method used was a 'free association task', commonly used to access the semantic content of social representation. Two different social representations of social workers were revealed, one for the French and one for the Swedish teachers. The French representation is characterised by highly positive aspects such as support, listening and competence. Swedish teachers' social representation of social workers is completely different: negative associations were common (44%), and among these, professional secrecy and law and regulations dominated. One plausible explanation is the difference of French and Swedish teachers' roles regarding collaboration with social workers.

  • Noise, voice and silencing during immigrant court-case performances in Swedish district courts
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ethnicities. - : Sage Publications. - 1468-7968 .- 1741-2706. ; 17:5, s. 667-687
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues that court-ritual unawareness, linguistic shortcomings andstereotypical images about non-Swedish otherness impair the position and actingspace for immigrants in a Swedish district court context. Drawing on two ethnographicallyinformed research projects focused on courtroom interaction during morethan 20 trials dealing with ‘domestic violence’ and ‘street-related crime’, we claimthat immigrant voices are often silenced due to taken-for-granted practices in court.Through analyses of interviews, performances, interpreted hearings and references toa desirable Swedishness, it is argued that situations are created where immigrantparticipants may experience their possibility of being understood as limited and theirvoices as being unheard. Such conditions are emotionally draining and may result inparticipants choosing silence over stating their case. This is a problem, not only withinthe individual court case, but also for the overall legitimacy of the court system and forissues of institutional trust among citizens.

  • At risk of exclusion? : Degrees of ICT access and literacy among senior citizens
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Information, Communication and Society. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1369-118X .- 1468-4462. - 9788090665507 ; 22:1, s. 55-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on data derived from a nationwide postal survey (n = 1264) with a simple random sample of Swedes between ages 65 and 85 (response rate: 63%), the article analyses the general patterns of: (a) degrees of information and communication (ICT) access and (b) ICT-literacy among Swedish senior citizens. The overall patterns of access and literacy are analysed in light of senior citizens’ assets – conceptualized as material, discursive and social resources – and their age and gender. The analysis reveals a positive correlation between levels of material (e.g., income), discursive (e.g., English skills) and social (e.g., social networks) resources and access to ICT. With greater resources, the average number of devices increases. The analysis also reveals a positive correlation between discursive and social resources and ICT-literacy. Gender has no bearing on access to devices, but might have some effect on ICT-literacy. The correlation between age, access and literacy is negative. With increasing age, both access and literacy decreases. In this respect, the study reveals a generational effect. However, since all three resources tend to decrease over the life cycle, the results are also discussed in terms of an age effect. These data and our analyses are contextualized by a critical discussion that reflects on the implications of these general patterns: What do they mean for senior citizens’ abilities to be included and participate in a continuously digitalizing society?

  • The limits of the decentred state : the case of policing insurance claims fraud
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Sociology. - : Wiley. - 0007-1315 .- 1468-4446. ; 70:1, s. 339-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing research clearly shows that the public–private divide is continuously being challenged, recast and transformed. However, this article argues that a sharp distinction between public and private continues to operate as an important norm for professionals involved in the investigation of insurance claims fraud in Sweden. It shows how power within private insurance companies and the police authority is organized around the public–private divide, which is in turn mobilized to justify repression and to give investigations legitimacy. The article indicates that the formal public–private distinction is far more thoroughly maintained than is suggested by the existing literature. Rather than challenging the centrality of state power, private insurers and the police construct, maintain and have a stake in the reproduction of a state-centric monopoly of crime control.

  • Lymphoid organisation in labial salivary gland biopsies is a possible predictor for the development of malignant lymphoma in primary Sjogren's syndrome
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - : BMJ. - 0003-4967 .- 1468-2060. ; 70:8, s. 1363-1368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE:The development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) confers a high risk of mortality in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) patients, but the sensitivity and specificity of proposed lymphoma predictors are insufficient for practical use. The performance of lymphoid organisation in the form of germinal centre (GC)-like lesions was evaluated in labial salivary gland biopsies taken at pSS diagnosis as a potential lymphoma-predicting biomarker.METHODS:Labial salivary gland tissue biopsies available from two Swedish pSS research cohorts (n=175) were re-evaluated by light microscopy in a blind study in order to identify GC-like structures as a sign of ectopic lymphoid tissue formation and organisation. A linkage study was performed with the Swedish Cancer Registry for lymphoma identification. The risk of developing NHL in GC-positive patients in comparison with GC-negative patients was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier statistics and log-rank test. Associations between GC-like structures and clinical and/or laboratory disease markers were also determined using χ(2) or Fisher's exact tests.RESULTS:At diagnosis, 25% of pSS patients had GC-like structures in their salivary glands. Seven of the 175 patients studied (14% GC+ and 0.8% GC-) developed NHL during 1855 patient-years at risk, with a median onset of 7 years following the initial diagnostic salivary gland biopsy. Six of the seven patients had GC-like structures at diagnosis; the remaining patient was GC negative at the time of diagnosis (p=0.001).CONCLUSIONS:The detection of GC-like structures by light microscopy in pSS diagnostic salivary biopsies is proposed as a highly predictive and easy-to-obtain marker for NHL development. This allows for risk stratification of patients and the possibility to initiate preventive B-cell-directed therapy.

  • A sense of displacement : Long-time residents´ feelings of displacement in gentrifying Bushwick, New York
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Urban and Regional Research. - : Wiley. - 0309-1317 .- 1468-2427. ; 39:6, s. 1191-1208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a contribution to reinforcing our understanding of gentrification and displacement as neighborhood expressions of inequality. It explores the experiences of gentrification of lower-income, long-time residents in the gentrifying neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, NYC. The focus is on components of displacement beyond the traditional emphasis on out-migration.  In particular, the paper pinpoints the emotional, affective, psychological reactions of long-time residents triggered through the encounter with newcomers. While the entry point is the exploration of emotions and affects, the paper argues that these feelings are outcomes of material socioeconomic inequalities and, in particular, their powerfully racialized historical foundations, as embodied in the contemporary encounter of long-time residents with newcomers.

  • Effects of water activity and low molecular weight humectants on skin permeability and hydration dynamics : a double-blind, randomized and controlled study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cosmetic Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0142-5463 .- 1468-2494. ; 36:5, s. 412-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The mammalian skin is a barrier that effectively separates the water-rich interior of the body from the normally dryer exterior. Changes in the external conditions, for example ambient humidity, have been shown to affect the skin barrier properties. The prime objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of water activity of a topical formulation on skin hydration and permeability. A second objective was to gain more understanding on how two commonly used humectants, urea and glycerol, affect skin barrier function in vivo. METHODS: Simple aqueous formulations were applied under occlusion to the volar forearm of healthy volunteers. Following 4-h exposure, skin water loss (by transepidermal water loss measurements), skin hydration (by Corneometry) and skin permeability (by time to vasodilation due to benzyl nicotinate exposure) were monitored. RESULTS: The results demonstrate that a relatively small change in the water activity of a topical formulation is sufficient to induce considerable effects on stratum corneum hydration and permeability to exogenous substances. Exposing the skin to high water activity leads to increased skin hydration and also increased permeability. Furthermore, urea and glycerol promote skin hydration and permeability even at reduced water activity of the applied formulation. CONCLUSION: These results highlight the importance of considering the water activity in topically applied formulations and the potential benefit of using humectants. The results may impact formulation optimization in how to facilitate skin hydration and to modify skin permeability by temporarily open and close the skin barrier.

  • Spatial imaging and evaluation of humectants impact on stratum corneum hydration with confocal Raman microscpectroscopy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cosmetic Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0142-5463 .- 1468-2494. ; :34, s. 359-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objective: Confocal Raman microspectroscopy (CRM) enables non-invasive depth-scanning of biological tissues. The technique has been used to obtain information about the molecular composition of the skin, tracking of externally applied compounds and to determine molecular concentration profiles. The objective of this study is to use CRM in order to evaluate the changes in stratum corneum hydration when applying polyethylene glycol and the humectants urea and glycerol, and thereby also varying the external chemical potential of water. In the present study we also utilize the advantages of CRM to create novel spatial high- resolution Raman images of stratum corneum. Methodology: Excised porcine skin membranes (500 nm in thickness) were equilibrated from the surface with phosphate buffered saline (PBS) together with different types of humectants using Franz cells. The Raman measurements were performed with a WITec alpha300 system (Ulm, Germany) equipped with a 532 nm laser. The change in stratum corneum hydration after treatment with different humectants was determined from the relative intensity of the water and protein spectra. Raman images were created along a cross section by integrating the Raman intensities for specific vibrational modes. Results and conclusions: The results show that the hydration profiles of stratum corneum correlates well with the gradient in water chemical potential created by the applied humectants, i.e. low molecular weight humectants enable increased hydration of stratum corneum compared to a high molecular weight, non-penetrating polyethylene glycol. In addition the novel results from the Raman imaging experiments illustrates that it is possible to distinguish between water rich domains and the extracellular lipid rich domains along a cross section of the intact skin membrane.
