  • Dialogue for strategy implementation : how framing processes enable the evolution of new opportunities
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - 1758-7484 .- 1367-3270.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Taking the dialogic organizational development perspective, this study aims to investigate the framing processes when engaging in dialogue for strategy implementation and how these enable the evolution of implementation opportunities. Design/methodology/approach Through a qualitative exploratory study conducted in a large multinational, the authors analyse the dialogue and interactions among 25 dyads when identifying opportunities to contribute to strategy implementation. The data analysis relies on a process-coding approach and linkography, a valuable protocol analysis for identifying recursive interaction schemas in conversations. Findings The authors identify four main framing processes – shaping, unveiling, scattering and shifting – and provide a framework of how these processes affect individuals’ mental models through increasing the tangibility of opportunities or elevating them to new value hierarchies. Research limitations/implications From a theoretical perspective, this study contributes to the strategy implementation and organizational development literature, providing a micro-perspective of how dialogue allows early knowledge structures to emerge and shape the development of opportunities for strategy implementation. Practical implications From a managerial perspective, the authors offer insights to trigger action and change in individuals to contribute to strategy when moving from formulation to implementation. Originality/value Rather than focusing on the structural control view of strategy implementation and the role of the top management team, this study considers strategy implementation as a practice and what it takes for organizational actors who do not take part in strategy formulation to enact and shape opportunities for strategy implementation through constructive dialogue.

  • Knowledge management in MNCs : the importance of subsidiary transfer performance
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - : Emerald. - 1367-3270 .- 1758-7484. ; 16:6, s. 904-918
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this paper is to shed light on how subsidiary willingness to transfer knowledge is influenced by formal control mechanisms from headquarters, and how this affects knowledge transfer performance. Design/methodology/approach: The study highlights and tests the influence of two formal control mechanisms: formal demand to transfer knowledge from headquarters, and performance evaluation system related to knowledge transfer. This is tested by subjecting a dataset of 149 knowledge transfer processes to a two-stage least square regression analysis. Findings: The robust results indicate that formal evaluation systems related to subsidiary knowledge transfer increases subsidiary willingness to transfer, and subsequently knowledge transfer performance, whereas formal demand by headquarters to share knowledge show a negative but not significant impact. Practical implications: The results highlight the strategic importance of eliminating motivational barriers in order to enhance knowledge transfer performance. By using outbound knowledge as a criterion when evaluating the subsidiary, managers can increase transfer performance by fostering subsidiary willingness to perform knowledge transfer. Originality/value: The findings indicate that KM in terms of subsidiary transfer willingness and transfer performance can be fostered and enhanced by the introduction of formal evaluation systems related to knowledge sharing. The results also contribute by revealing that formal control mechanisms differ in their degree of influence in terms of fostering subsidiary transfer willingness and transfer performance.

  • Collaborate as a flock in the organization: how selection and synthesis influence knowledge convergence within a complex adaptive system
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - : Emerald. - 1758-7484 .- 1367-3270. ; 26:11, s. 142-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose This study aims to investigate how two collaborative methods - selection and synthesis - influence knowledge convergence when people articulate a new strategic direction driving transformation within the organization. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a longitudinal field experiment developed in four organizations involving 82 employees over a three-month process. Inspired by dynamics governing flocks as complex adaptive systems, selection and synthesis have been separately used in two sets of companies. Primary and secondary data have been largely collected and analyzed throughout the whole process. Findings This study describes how the two alternative methods differently influenced two kinds of knowledge convergence. While selection triggers a general and static knowledge convergence and the propagation of individual knowledge over time, synthesis fosters a local and dynamic knowledge convergence where individuals tend to propagate knowledge generated collectively. Research limitations/implications This research offers insights into understanding the influence of alternative collaborative methods on the creation and propagation of knowledge when people are converging toward a new strategic direction. From a theoretical perspective, it contributes to complex adaptive system theory, highlighting the role of knowledge convergence and emergence through collaboration. Practical implications This research offers insights to managers who deal with the complexity of the engagement of different stakeholders during collaborative processes, offering some actionable takeaways to foster knowledge convergence by alternatively employing selection and synthesis. Originality/value This paper contributes to the management and social information processing literature emphasizing the role of knowledge convergence emerging from the complex interactions among multiple stakeholders.

  • Exploring the role of structural holes in learning : an empirical study of Swedish pharmacies
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - : Emerald. - 1367-3270 .- 1758-7484. ; 16:4, s. 576-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: There is a lack of studies investigating the role of the structural configuration of social capital - more specifically, structural holes - for employees' individual learning. The objective of this paper is to address this gap in the literature, ultimately enhancing understanding of the link between the structural configuration of social capital and individual learning. Design/methodology/approach: An online questionnaire survey was administered to employees affiliated to 22 pharmacies in Sweden to gather attributional and relational data on the individual level. Social network analysis techniques were used to describe salient structural characteristics of individuals' social capital. The impact of social capital on individual learning was explored through ordinal logistic regression models based on maximum likelihood estimations. Findings: The presence of structural holes initially increases the degree of individual learning, then reaches a maximum and begins to gradually decrease. Practical implications: The results of the study provide valuable input for the development and management of networks within firms, in order to improve learning and innovation. In addition, given the close proximity between learning, as conceptualized in this study, and other job attitudes, human resource management practices in general could benefit greatly from the results. Originality/value: In this paper, the authors focus on the structural configuration of social capital, more specifically structural holes, and its inter-relationship with learning. Although prior literature has analyzed various beneficial effects of social capital, this study is the first of its kind to investigate the role of the structural configuration of the social capital for employees' individual learning.

  • From implementation to appropriation: understanding knowledge management system development and introduction as a process of translation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - 1367-3270. ; 19:6, s. 1273-1294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper aims to examine the complexities emerging in the attempts to develop a sophisticated IT-based knowledge management system (KMS) for sharing knowledge. Using actor-network theory, the authors conceptualise this as continuous processes of translation, whereby heterogeneous human and non-human (e.g. technologies, methods and plans) elements are drawn together and mobilised to produce stable networks through associations between them. Design/methodology/approach – The case study method was adopted using a narrative approach that studies the ways of organising work in organisations. Shadowing, field notes, diary studies and participant observation were the main data collection methods used. Findings – The development and introduction of a KMS is a contingent and local process shaped by messy translations whereby the original idea, human and other non-human elements are reconfigured. By considering humans and non-humans symmetrically, the intended and unintended actions, and the role of unexpected events, this approach overcomes the deterministic view of human nature of the conventional KMS approaches. Research limitations/implications – A conceptual framework is presented as a means to improve the understanding of the complex associations emerging within networks of people, objects and machines during the development and introduction of KMS. Practical implications – The translation approach helps practitioners to consider their taken-for-granted assumptions about people, machines and the associations among them. This assists practitioners to uncover emerging conflicting issues between human and machines, among machines and among humans. Furthermore, this allows practitioners to recognise the different identities humans and non-humans take, overtime, as a result of emerging associations. Originality/value – The originality of this paper lies in the use of alternative conceptual lenses to understand KMS development and introduction as processes of translation. Additionally, rather than exploring the success stories, it focuses on a failed attempt to introduce a KMS.

  • Knowledge management and succession planning in SMEs
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1367-3270 .- 1758-7484. ; 16:4, s. 637-649
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: An ignorance of knowledge attrition caused by employee exits is considered as careless and can lead to considerable consequences regarding both a firm's financial capital and intellectual capital, or in other words an ignorance of the danger of knowledge loss is associated with a missing or improper succession planning. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of how a medium-sized firm copes with the danger of knowledge loss due to employee exit or long-term absence. Design/methodology/approach: Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with 14 organization members from a German medium-sized enterprise operating in the printing sector. These participants represented different departments and positions. Findings: The findings demonstrate the influence of a precarious financial situation on activities related to knowledge management and succession planning. Although the organization members are aware of obvious needs for improvement within the firm, their actual scope of action is centered on the execution of current orders. Research limitations/implications: The data are cross-sectional and were collected in one organization. Future studies should consider longitudinal designs across multiple organizations. Practical implications: Based on the findings some suggestions were derived that may help firms facing similar circumstances. Originality/value: The study's findings provide fresh insights into how an established firm tackles the issue of knowledge attrition and its likely implications for the firm's performance. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • Knowledge management in SMEs : A literature review
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1367-3270 .- 1758-7484. ; 16:6, s. 879-903
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this paper is to review research on knowledge management in small and medium-sized enterprises to identify gaps in the current body of knowledge, which justify future research directions. Design/methodology/approach: The study consists of a systematic review of 36-refereed empirical articles on knowledge management and small and medium-sized enterprises. Findings: The areas of knowledge management implementation, knowledge management perception, and knowledge transfer are relatively well researched topics; whereas those of knowledge identification, knowledge storage/retention and knowledge utilisation are poorly understood. Given the prevalence of small and medium-sized enterprises there is a strong need for more research on this important topic. The future research directions proposed by the authors may help to develop a greater understanding of knowledge management in small and medium-sized enterprises. Research limitations/implications: By only using the ProQuest database this study may not have allowed a complete coverage of all empirical articles in the field of knowledge management in small and medium-sized enterprises. Yet, it is believed that the findings provide a valuable understanding of the current situation in this research field. The study proposes a number of future research directions, which may stimulate more intensive research in this important field. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, no systematic literature review on this topic has previously been published in academic journals. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • Knowledge management in the making: using the balanced scorecard and e-mail systems
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of knowledge management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1758-7484 .- 1367-3270. ; 10:3, s. 86-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - Knowledge management deals with the production, application, and distribution of knowledge within and between organizations. Such intellectual resources do not appear ex nihilo, but are always constituted through practices and undertakings in an everyday work life setting. This paper seeks to examine how two managerial tools, the balanced scorecard and an e-mail system, are used to represent and classify various knowledge-based resources in two organizations.Design methodology approach - The paper draws on Foucault's perhaps least recognized work, The Birth of the Clinic and shows how what Foucault calls sensible knowledge is useful for understanding BSC and the e-mail system. Sensible knowledge integrates a number of human faculties such as ocular, representational, and communicative skills in many cases taken for granted and poorly considered in organization theory. Two case studies serve as the primary empirical domain.Findings - The paper concludes that knowledge can never be taken for granted, but must always be examined at the level of its constitution and reproduction, i.e. within the regimes of representation and classification in which practitioners operate. Such regimes of representation and classification are immanent in a variety of managerial tools and technological systems and must therefore be examined in greater details.Research limitations implications - The immediate implications from managerial tools and technological systems need to be studied in their context and understood as principal resources for managing knowledge in practice.Originality value - The paper bridges theoretical writings on representation classification, sensible knowledge and the more mundane everyday work life practices that constitute organizations.
