  • Negative chain referral sampling : doing justice to subcultural diversity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1469-9680 .- 1367-6261. ; 25:9, s. 1268-1283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper calls for renewed consideration of the way researchsubjects are selected in the study of subcultures. All too often, subcultural researchers limit themselves to the use of one or twoof the orthodox sampling designs, such as ‘conveniencesampling’ (selecting subjects who are readily available) or ‘chainreferral sampling’ (selecting a readily available subject who refersthe researcher to other subjects). While these designs certainlyhave their merits, especially in the early research phase ofnegotiating access and acceptance, they may impede insight intothe diversity that exists within subcultural groups. Based onethnographic fieldwork among punks and graffiti writers, thispaper introduces a supplementary design, that of ‘negative chainreferral sampling’, which consists of using group members’categorisations of subcultural anomalies as an opening to exploresubcultural variation and tensions. This design is one that flipsthe logic of conventional chain referral sampling: if we areencouraged not to speak to certain subjects, for instance, due totheir lack of authenticity or status, this forms the motivation fordoing exactly that. Closer examination of subcultural anomaliesmay deepen our understanding of the boundary work, identitymakingand social exclusion that occurs in all subcultural groups.

  • Traditional versus experimental pathways to university: Educational aspirations among young Swedes with and without an immigrant background
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1469-9680 .- 1367-6261. ; 22:7, s. 891-906
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the different ways in which young people with and without an immigrant background, who have in common that they aspire for a higher education, picture their nearest future. We distinguish between two major pathways to a university education: a traditional pathway (direct transition from upper secondary school to university) and an experimental pathway (where university plans are mixed with other plans, such as work and travel). Data come from a school survey of 685 final-year students in 10 upper secondary schools in Malmö, the third biggest metropolitan area in Sweden. We find that it is much more common among youth with an immigrant background to plan for a traditional pathway, compared to youth of Swedish background who instead are more inclined to plan for experimentation. This difference remains when controlling for factors related to school performance and parental socioeconomic background.

  • For activists, for potential voters, for consumers: three modes of producing the civic web
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - London : Informa UK Limited. - 1469-9680 .- 1367-6261. ; 11:5, s. 497-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last decade, numerous studies of the internet's civic dimensions have taught us a considerable amount about the form of new technologies. They have, for instance, analysed how the internet's interactive character, its multimodality and its open character create civic opportunities, not least for young people. The field has, however, rather neglected a number of important issues. For instance, the category of 'producers' of civic content has received little attention. Hence, research has neglected questions such as the following. What interests inspire producers of civic websites? How is the production being carried through? What views of the internet inspire their work? This article begins to redress this neglect by analysing the producers of three different websites. The three websites are brought from different spheres of civil society - party politics, commercial media and activism - and they are analysed through producer interviews. The article reveals and critically discusses differences and similarities between different modes of producing civic web resources.

  • The young protester: the impact of belongingness needs on political engagement
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-6261 .- 1469-9680. ; 24:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As institutional forms of political engagement continue to decline, participation in protests steadily become more common. These trends are particularly strong among younger citizens. Previous research indicates that social factors can explain participation in political protests, and that younger citizens' participation in protests is more affected by social ties than older people's participation. Even though the desire for social affiliation is a fundamental human need, there are individual differences in the need for belongingness. The aim of the current study is to investigate if part of younger people's higher level of participation in protests can be explained by individual-level differences in belongingness needs. More specifically, the study investigates whether a larger part of younger people's participation is explained by need to belong (NTB), as compared to older people's participation. In line with the hypothesis, results from a survey study of a representative sample of the Swedish population (N = 2034), show that only younger people's participation is predicted by individual-level belongingness needs; the higher the NTB among young people, the higher the tendency to protest, while this effect is absent among older people. These results have important implications for our understanding of participation in protest activities and youth mobilization.

  • Taking ownership of gaming and disability
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Youth Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1469-9680 .- 1367-6261. ; 20:9, s. 1143-1160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gaming among young people with disabilities is often understood within a habilitation frame, as if video and computer games primarily should help to exercise and ‘improve’. Little is known about how these games are used within a private frame, and how young people with disabilities operate their gaming as concrete persons rather than as treatment-receiving clients. Through the use of stories, descriptions, and demonstrations from Swedish youth and young adults with disabilities (muscle diseases, cerebral palsy, and Asperger’s syndrome), we explore these gamers’ practical maneuvers, verbal accounts, and biographical-narrative concerns in relation to digital games. As they strive to bypass or overcome digital inaccessibility, various challenges find their way into their gaming practices, not only to complicate, distract, or disturb them but also to give them extra meaning. Gamer–game identifications turn multifaceted, with disabilities serving as paths both around and into the games’ ‘magical circles’. We suggest partly new concepts – beyond a habilitation frame – to capture how young people struggle to take ownership of gaming and disability: engrossment maintenance, vicarious gamers and biographical as well as situational refuge.
