  • Dynamic Buffer Management Scheme Based on Rate Estimation in Packet-Switched Networks
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 39:6, s. 769-787
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  While traffic volume of real-time applications is rapidly increasing, current routers do not guarantee minimum QoS values of fairness and drop packets in random fashion. If routers provide a minimum QoS, resulting less delays, more fairness, and smoother sending rates, TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) can be adopted for real-time applications. We propose a dynamic buffer management scheme that meets the requirements described above, and can be applied to TCP flow and to data flow for transfer of real-time applications. The proposed scheme consists of a virtual threshold function, an accurate and stable per-flow rate estimation, a per-flow exponential drop probability, and a dropping strategy that guarantees fairness when there are many flows. Moreover, we introduce a practical definition of active flows to reduce the overhead coming from maintaining per-flow states. We discuss how proposed scheme motivates real-time applications to adopt TFRC.

  • Extensible use of RDF in a business context
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 33:1, s. 347-364

    • The next generation of intranets should facilitate the structuring of information as well as the organizing of communication in networking organizations. For many organizations, one step in that direction is to structure information by adding metadata. We have encountered problems when applying Dublin Core, a metadata element set developed for discovery of existing information resources on the public Internet, on an extensive intranet. Our conclusion, argued in this paper, is that these problems are a consequence of trying to describe information resources without taking into account the context in which end users create and consume information. The next generation of intranets calls for a more contextual approach. The contribution of this paper is such an approach. We propose a framework including: (1) A model for describing three different areas of resources: business, information and communication, and integrating the resources description areas by means of generic classes, constrains and relations. (2) An extension to the model describing and integrating nodes and relations in networking organizations. (3) An extension to the model describing and organizing the communication of information in the business. The framework suggests an extensible use of RDF (Resource Description Framework) in a business context.

  • The role of big data analytics in Internet of Things
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 129:2, s. 459-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The explosive growth in the number of devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the exponential increase in data consumption only reflect how the growth of big data perfectly overlaps with that of IoT. The management of big data in a continuously expanding network gives rise to non-trivial concerns regarding data collection efficiency, data processing, analytics, and security. To address these concerns, researchers have examined the challenges associated with the successful deployment of IoT. Despite the large number of studies on big data, analytics, and IoT, the convergence of these areas creates several opportunities for flourishing big data and analytics for IoT systems. In this paper, we explore the recent advances in big data analytics for IoT systems as well as the key requirements for managing big data and for enabling analytics in an IoT environment. We taxonomized the literature based on important parameters. We identify the opportunities resulting from the convergence of big data, analytics, and IoT as well as discuss the role of big data analytics in IoT applications. Finally, several open challenges are presented as future research directions.

  • An energy-efficient and secure identity based RFID authentication scheme for vehicular cloud computing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) is a contemporary paradigm that includes the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and vehicular networking technologies. VCC offers vehicle-to-device, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and vehicle-to-vehicle communication in which the vehicles can communicate using sensing abilities. VCC is exploiting the IoT environment, cloud architecture, and vehicle resources. However, the energy-efficient privacy of communicators and security of communication are assertive problems in VCC. To accomplish this goal, we present an identity-based authentication scheme for VCC which also uses radio frequency identification (RFID). The security and robustness of the devised scheme are evaluated using informal and formal analysis. The informal analysis shows that our scheme is vigorous to resist various attacks. The formal analysis is done through Random Oracle Model (ROM) which shows that the scheme is secure and efficient. The performance of our scheme is also determined and compared with various related schemes which clearly illustrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme. Thus, our scheme is very efficient for employment in the VCC environment.

  • Incentive mechanism for competitive edge caching in 5G-enabled Internet of things
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier BV. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fifth generation (5G) of cellular networks provides the enabling environment for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Hence, the vast proliferation of 5G-enabled IoT devices and services led to an overwhelming growth of data traffic that could saturate the core network's backhaul links. Nowadays, caching is an unavoidable technique to solve this issue, whereby popular contents are stored on edge nodes near to end-users. There exist several initiatives to motivate caching actors for improving the caching process, but not designed for the real-world competitive caching market. In this work, we propose an incentive caching strategy in a 5G-enabled IoT network by considering a completely competitive caching scenario with multiple 5G mobile network operators (MNOs) and multiple content providers (CPs). The MNOs manage a set of edge caches on their base stations and they are competing to fill these caching resources, while the CPs detain a set of popular contents and are in conflict to rent the MNOs’ caches. Each MNO aims to maximize its monetary profit and offload its backhaul links, as each CP aims to improve the quality of experience (QoE) of its end-users. Then, we formulate a multi-leader multi-follower Stackelberg game to model the interaction between MNOs and CPs and define the different players’ utilities. Subsequently, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the convex optimization method to investigate the Stackelberg equilibrium. Finally, the numerical results of the different experimentations demonstrate that our game-based incentive strategy can significantly alleviate the backhaul links while improving the user QoE.

  • Studying and improving the performance of ETSI ITS contention-based forwarding (CBF) in urban and highway scenarios: S-FoT
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper evaluates the performance of ETSI ITS Contention-Based Forwarding (CBF) and ETSI Simple GeoBroadcast forwarding while disseminating warning messages over a Geographical Area in highway and urban scenarios. Our experimental evaluation considers the complete ETSI ITS architecture including the Decentralized Congestion Control (DCC) mechanism. We propose an enhanced CBF mechanism, named S-FOT+, which combines several improvements to the ETSI CBF algorithm. S-FoT+ has a similar or better performance than the ETSI forwarding algorithms regarding both reliability and end-to-end delay while requiring much fewer transmissions. The improvements are equally effective and efficient in both urban and highway scenarios with large Destination Areas. Finally, we evaluate the trade-offs that stem from using multi-hop broadcast mechanisms in urban settings with smaller Destination Areas when compared to single-hop broadcast. Results show that multi-hop mechanisms significantly improve coverage at the cost of an increased number of transmissions. © 2023 The Author(s)

  • Service-based Analytics for 5G open experimentation platforms
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A scalable, flexible and reliable Analytics service has become a requirement toward building efficient Fifth Generation (5G) experimental platforms that can support a suite of end-user experiments and verticals. Our paper presents the challenges that come with designing such a service-based Analytics component, and shows how we have used it in the context of open experimental platforms in the 5GENESIS project. Our Analytics service was designed both for enabling the efficient setup and configuration of the underlying platform, and also for ensuring that it provides useful insights into the experimentation Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) toward the end-user. Thus, Analytics proved to be a useful tool across several stages, starting from ensuring correct operation during the initial phases of the network setup and continuing into the normal day-to-day experimentation. Our experiments show how the tool was used in our setup and provide information on how to apply it to different environments. The Analytics component, designed as a set of microservices that serve several goals in the analytics workflow, is also provided as open source, being part of the Open5Genesis suite.

  • Performance Analysis of Ad-Hoc Routing in Heterogeneous Clustered Multi-hop Wireless Networks
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 80, s. 144-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the performance of clustered decode-and-forward multi-hop relaying (CDFMR) wireless Rayleigh fading networks, and sheds light on their design principles for energy and spectral efficiency. The focus is on a general performance analysis (over all SNR range) of heterogeneous wireless networks with possibly different numbers of relays in clusters of various separations. For clustered multi-hop relaying systems, hop-by-hop routing is known as an efficient decentralized routing algorithm which selects the best relay node in each hop using local channel state information. In this article, we combine hop-by-hop routing and cooperative diversity in CDFMR systems, and we derive (i) a closed-form expression for the probability distribution of the end-to-end SNR at the destination node; (ii) the system symbol error rate (SER) performance for a wide class of modulation schemes; and (iii) exact analytical expressions for the system ergodic capacity, the outage probability and the achievable probability of the SNR (power) gain. We also provide simple analytical asymptotic expressions for SER and the outage probability in high SNR regime. Numerical results are provided to validate the correctness of the presented analyses.

  • Performance analysis of CSMA/CA protocols with multi-packet transmission
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 57:14, s. 2675-2688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless objects equipped with multiple antennas are able to simultaneously transmit multiple packets by exploiting the channel's spatial dimensions. In this paper, we study the benefits of such Multiple Packet Transmission (MPT) approach, when it is used in combination with a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol for fully interconnected networks, addressing the interactions between the two mechanisms and showing the performance gains that can be achieved. To this end, a very simple Media Access Control (MAC) protocol that captures the fundamental properties and tradeoffs of a CSMA/CA channel access protocol supporting MPT is introduced. Using this protocol as a reference, a new analytical model is presented for the case of non-saturated traffic sources with finite buffer space. Simulation results show that the analytical model is able to accurately characterize the steady-state behavior of the reference protocol for different number of antennas and different traffic loads, providing a useful tool for understanding the performance gains achieved by MAC protocols supporting MPT. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. • IntOpt : In-band Network Telemetry optimization framework to monitor network slices using P4
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is being heralded as an enabler of the recent technologies such as 5G/6G, IoT and heterogeneous networks. Existing NFV monitoring frameworks either do not have the capabilities to express the range of telemetry items needed to perform management or do not scale to large traffic volumes and rates. We present IntOpt, a scalable and expressive telemetry system designed for flexible NFV monitoring using active probing and P4. IntOpt allows us to specify monitoring requirements for individual service chain, which are mapped to telemetry item collection jobs that fetch the required telemetry items from P4 programmable data-plane elements. We propose mixed integer linear program (MILP) as well as a simulated annealing based random greedy (SARG) meta-heuristic approach to minimize the overhead due to active probing and collection of telemetry items. Using P4-FPGA, we benchmark the overhead for telemetry collection. Our numerical evaluation shows that the proposed approach can reduce monitoring overheads by 39% and monitoring delays by 57%. Such optimization may as well enable existing expressive monitoring frameworks to scale for larger real-time networks.
