  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 56:11
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A–A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden (Workshop link: https://indico.lucas.lu.se/event/1214/). The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

  • Conceptual design report for a Beta-Beam facility
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 47:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Beta-Beam is a concept of large-scale facility that aims at providing pure electronic neutrino and antineutrino beams for the measurement of v(e) -> v(mu) oscillations. Beta-decaying nuclides are produced in large amounts in a facility of the scale of EURISOL, and are then post-accelerated and stored at large gamma in a racetrack decay ring. We present here a conceptual design of the accelerator chain of a Beta-Beam based at CERN.

  • Light nuclei in the vicinity of the dripline and beyond
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 51:8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After a brief historical overview of the field of physics with radioactive beams, we give an update of the most recent experimental achievements for nuclei at or beyond the nuclear driplines. Long-lived exotic nuclear states are discussed including multi-nucleon radioactivity and exotic isomers. Studies of correlations between decay products in three-body decays and analysis in a Jacobi-coordinate framework are discussed with special emphasis on the difficulty in the interpretations of data obtained in different reactions. We give examples of systematic studies that the vast amount of now existing data allows, such as shell closures, competition between single-particle states in isotopes, isotones and mirror nuclei. The Thomas-Ehrman shift, Garvey-Kelson-type mass relations and IMME analysis of isobaric multiplets with isospin $ T = 3/2$ and 2 are also discussed as well as alternative interpretations in certain cases.

  • The fission experimental programme at the CERN n_TOF facility : status and perspectives
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 56:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-induced fission reactions play a crucial role in a variety of fields of fundamental and applied nuclear science. In basic nuclear physics they provide important information on properties of nuclear matter, while in nuclear technology they are at the basis of present and future reactor designs. Finally, there is a renewed interest in fission reactions in nuclear astrophysics due to the multi-messenger observation of neutron star mergers and the important role played by fission recycling in r-process nucleosynthesis. Although studied for several decades, many fundamental questions still remain on fission reactions, while modern applications and the development of more reliable nuclear models require high-accuracy and consistent experimental data on fission cross sections and other fission observables. To address these needs, an extensive fission research programme has been carried out at the n_TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN during the last 18 years, taking advantage of the high energy resolution, high luminosity and wide energy range of the neutron beam, as well as of the detection and data acquisition systems designed for this purpose. While long-lived isotopes are studied on the 185 m long flight-path, the recent construction of a second experimental area at a distance of about 19 m has opened the way to challenging measurements of short-lived actinides. This article provides an overview of the n_TOF experimental programme on neutron-induced fission reactions along with the main characteristics of the facility, the various detection systems and data analysis techniques used. The most important results on several major and minor actinides obtained so far and the future perspectives of fission measurements at n_TOF are presented and discussed.

  • Physics opportunities with the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array : AGATA
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 56:5
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New physics opportunities are opening up by the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array, AGATA, as it evolves to the full 4 pi instrument. AGATA is a high-resolution gamma -ray spectrometer, solely built from highly segmented high-purity Ge detectors, capable of measuring gamma rays from a few tens of keV to beyond 10 MeV, with unprecedented efficiency, excellent position resolution for individual gamma -ray interactions, and very high count-rate capability. As a travelling detector AGATA will be employed at all major current and near-future European research facilities delivering stable and radioactive ion beams.

  • Thermal Field Theory in real-time formalism : concepts and applications for particle decays
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review represents a detailed and comprehensive discussion of the Thermal Field Theory (TFT) concepts and key results in Yukawa-type theories. We start with a general pedagogical introduction into the TFT in the imaginary- and real-time formulation. As phenomenologically relevant implications, we present a compendium of thermal decay rates for several typical reactions calculated within the framework of the real-time formalism and compared to the imaginary-time results found in the literature. Processes considered here are those of a neutral (pseudo)scalar decaying into two distinct (pseudo)scalars or into a fermion-antifermion pair. These processes are extended from earlier works to include chemical potentials and distinct species in the final state. In addition, a (pseudo)scalar emission off a fermion line is also discussed. These results demonstrate the importance of thermal effects in particle decay observables relevant in many phenomenological applications in systems at high temperatures and densities.

  • Future research program on prompt gamma-ray emission in nuclear fission
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 51:12, s. 1-9
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years the measurement of prompt fission gamma-ray spectra (PFGS) has gained renewed interest, after about forty years since the first comprehensive studies of the reactions U-235(n(th), f), Pu-239(n(th), f) and Cf-252(sf). The renaissance was initiated by requests for new values especially for.-ray multiplicity and average total energy release per fission in neutron-induced fission of U-235 and Pu-239. Both isotopes are considered the most important ones with respect to the modeling of innovative cores required for the Generation-IV reactors, the majority working with fast neutrons. During the last 5 years we have conducted a systematic study of spectral data for thermal-neutron-induced fission on U-235 and Pu-241 as well as for the spontaneous fission of Cf-252 with unprecedented accuracy. From the new data we conclude that those reactions do not considerably contribute to the observed heat excess and suspect other reactions playing a significant role. Possible contributions may originate from fast-neutron-induced reactions on U-238, which is largely present in the fuel, or from gamma-induced fission from neutron capture in the construction material. A first experiment campaign on prompt gamma-ray emission from fast-neutron-induced fission on U-235,U-238 was successfully performed in order to test our assumptions. In the following we attempt to summarize, what has been done in the field to date, and to motivate future measurement campaigns exploiting dedicated neutron and photon beams as well as upcoming highly efficient detector assemblies.

  • The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library, JEFF-3.3
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 56:7
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides 235U, 238U and 239Pu, on 241Am and 23Na, 59Ni, Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yields, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data for the evaluations. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 performes very well for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy.

  • Results and plans for nuclear spectroscopy of superheavy nuclei: the Lund perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 58:12
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A survey of nuclear structure results obtained along α-decay chains stemming from isotopes of element 114, Fl, and element 115, Mc, is presented. Measures taken to ensure a reliable hand-over of nuclear spectroscopy output to nuclear structure theory are outlined. Possible links between decay chains starting from element 117, Ts, and element 115, Mc, are commented on. The experiments were conducted with the TASISpec set-up placed in the focal plane of the TASCA separator at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany. Plans to improve the decay-spectroscopy set-up towards future superheavy endeavours are described.

  • Radiative corrections : from medium to high energy experiments
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - 1434-6001. ; 60:4
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiative corrections are crucial for modern high-precision physics experiments, and are an area of active research in the experimental and theoretical community. Here we provide an overview of the state of the field of radiative corrections with a focus on several topics: lepton–proton scattering, QED corrections in deep-inelastic scattering, and in radiative light-hadron decays. Particular emphasis is placed on the two-photon exchange, believed to be responsible for the proton form-factor discrepancy, and associated Monte-Carlo codes. We encourage the community to continue developing theoretical techniques to treat radiative corrections, and perform experimental tests of these corrections.
