  • Coulomb excitation of the odd-odd isotopes In-106,In-108
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 44:3, s. 355-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The low-lying states in the odd-odd and unstable isotopes In-106,In-108 have been Coulomb excited from the ground state and the first excited isomeric state at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. With the additional data provided here the pi g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu d(5/2) and pi g(9/2)(-1) circle times nu g7/2 multiplets have been re-analyzed and are modified compared to previous results. The observed gamma-ray de-excitation patterns were interpreted within a shell model calculation based on a realistic effective interaction. The agreement between theory and experiment is satisfactory and the calculations reproduce the observed differences in the excitation pattern of the two isotopes. The calculations exclude a 6(+) ground state in In-106. This is in agreement with the conclusions drawn using other techniques. Furthermore, based on the experimental results, it is also concluded that the ordering of the isomeric and ground state in In-108 is inverted compared to the shell model prediction. Limits on B(E2) values have been extracted where possible. A previously unknown low-lying state at 367 keV in In-106 is also reported.

  • Shape evolution in even-mass 98-104Zr isotopes via lifetime measurements using the γ γ-coincidence technique
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 59:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first 2(+) state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+) ) going from Zr-98 to Zr-100 has been the first example of "quantum phase transition" in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the gamma gamma-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. This work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in Zr98-104 carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in gamma gamma-coincidence and gamma-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree-Fock- Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

  • High-resolution In-beam Particle Spectroscopy - New Results on Prompt Proton Emission from 58Cu
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 14:2, s. 137-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prompt proton decay lines in Cu-58 have been studied by means of high-resolution in-beam particle-gamma coincidence spectroscopy using the GAMMASPHERE Ge-detector array in conjunction with a dedicated set of ancillary detectors including four DeltaE-E silicon-strip telescopes. High-spin states in Cu-58 have been populated via the heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction Si-28(Ar-36, 1alpha1p1n) at 148 MeV beam energy. The full-width at half maximum for the proton peak could be reduced significantly compared to earlier experiments. The results indicate that only one prompt proton decay branch exists in the decay-out of the well-deformed band of Cu-58.

  • Coulomb excitation of neutron-rich beams at REX-ISOLDE
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 25:Suppl. 1, s. 397-402
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After the successful commissioning of the radioactive beam experiment at ISOLDE (REX-ISOLDE) - an accelerator for exotic nuclei produced by ISOLDE - in 2002 and the promotion to a CERN user facility in 2003, first physics experiments using these beams were performed. Initial experiments focused on the region of deformation in the vicinity of the neutron-rich Na and Mg isotopes. Preliminary results on the neutron-rich Na and Mg isotopes show the high potential and physics opportunities offered by the exotic isotope accelerator REX in conjunction with the modern Germanium gamma spectrometer MINIBALL.

  • Search for proton emission of the isomeric 10+ state in 54Ni
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 56:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several experiments were conducted at the 10 MV Van-de-Graaff tandem accelerator at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Cologne, to detect proton emission from the isomeric 6457-keV 10+ state in 54Ni. Excitation functions for two fusion–evaporation reactions were measured to maximise the population of the rare two-neutron evaporation channel from a 56Ni compound nucleus. The search for delayed proton emission was based on the 28Si(28Si,2n)54Ni reaction at a beam energy of 70 MeV. For this reaction, a cross-section limit for the population of the 10+ state in 54Ni and its proton-decay branch was determined to be σ< 22 nb.

  • Observation of negative-parity high-spin states of As-68
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 24:1, s. 1-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-deficient nucleus As-68 was populated at high spin in two experiments using the reaction Ca-40(S-32, 3pn) at beam energies of 105 and 95 MeV. A self-supporting and a gold-backed, highly enriched Ca-40 target were used. Gamma rays were detected with the EUROBALL array, combined with the charged-particle detector array EUCLIDES and the Neutron Wall. The As-68 level scheme was considerably extended, especially at negative parity and many previous spin-parity assignments were confirmed or rejected. The total-Routhian-surface (TRS) calculations find shape coexistence and γ softness for the negative- and positive-parity states, respectively.

  • Stable collective triaxial rotation in Kr-77
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 33, s. 303-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on the gamma-spectroscopic analysis of G.N. Sylvan et al., configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations have been performed. They describe the nucleus Kr-77 globally in good agreement with the experimental findings and the expectations derived from single-particle orbitals in a deformed potential. Within these calculations, the unambiguous assignment of a configuration with three protons and five neutrons in the g(9/2) shell to the high-spin Yrast states of negative parity indicates that the nucleus Kr-77 has stable triaxial deformation and rotates about the intermediate axis. This not only disproves the recent interpretation of an occupation of the d(5/2) orbital being responsible for the strong deformation in this band, but also represents one of the first examples in this mass region for such a rotation.

  • Compex: a cubic germanium detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X. ; 56:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Compex detector is an electrically cooled, composite germanium detector that uses four coaxial, cubic-shaped, single-encapsulated germanium crystals. This novel detector allows for new heights in photon detection efficiency in decay spectroscopy setups using box-shaped vacuum chambers. Its spectroscopic performance and detection efficiency is evaluated by means of source measurements. Motivated by Compex’s unique cubic germanium crystals, the Lund scanning system has been developed. The constructed system is used to characterise the response as a function of interaction position within a Compex crystal. Sensitivity across the front face, pulse shapes, and rise times have been analysed. Future development and applications of the Compex detector are discussed.

  • The Miniball spectrometer
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 49:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Miniball germanium detector array has been operational at the REX (Radioactive ion beam EXperiment) post accelerator at the Isotope Separator On-Line facility ISOLDE at CERN since 2001. During the last decade, a series of successful Coulomb excitation and transfer reaction studies have been performed with this array, utilizing the unique and high-quality radioactive ion beams which are available at ISOLDE. In this article, an overview is given of the technical details of the full Miniball setup, including a description of the.-ray and particle detectors, beam monitoring devices and methods to deal with beam contamination. The specific timing properties of the REX-ISOLDE facility are highlighted to indicate the sensitivity that can be achieved with the full Miniball setup. The article is finalized with a summary of some physics highlights at REX-ISOLDE and the utilization of the Miniball germanium detectors at other facilities.

  • High-spin spectroscopy of Ga-63(31)32 and Ga-65(31)34
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 11:1, s. 25-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in the nuclei Ga-63 and Ga-65 were studied following the reaction S-32 + Ca-40 at a reaction energy of 125 MeV and using the GASP gamma -ray spectrometer in combination with the ISIS charged-particle detector system. In addition to low-lying negative-parity states with single-particle character, rotational-like cascades built on the 9/2(+) and 19/2(-) states have been observed in both nuclei. Sidebands with negative parity in Ga-63 and positive parity in Ga-65 could be established. The experimental results are compared with Total Routhian Surface calculations which describe the nuclei as moderately deformed (beta (2) approximate to 0.25) and gamma soft at low rotational frequencies. The highest experimentally observed positive-parity state in Ga-65 (41/2(+)) is in good agreement with the calculated crossing of the collective band with a non-collective one terminating at this spin.
