Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- The FRS-RISING set-up at GSI uses secondary radioactive beams at relativistic energies for nuclear structure studies. At GSI the fragmentation or fission of stable primary beams up to U-238 provide secondary beams with sufficient intensity to perform gamma-ray spectroscopy. The RISING set-up is described and results of the first RISING campaign are presented. New experimental methods at relativistic energies are being investigated. Future experiments focus on state-of-the art nuclear structure physics covering exotic nuclei all over the nuclear chart.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Relativistic projectile fragmentation of Pb-208 has been used to produce isomers in neutron-rich, A approximate to 190 nuclides. A forward-focusing spectrometer provided ion-by-ion mass and charge identification. The detection of gamma-rays emitted by stopped ions has led to the assignment of isomers in Ta-188, W-190, Re-192, Re-193, Os-195, Ir-197, Ir-198, Pt-200, Pt-201, Pt-202 and Au-203, with half-lives ranging from approximately 10 ns to 1 ms. Tentative isomer information has been found also for Er-174, Er-175, Hf-185, Re-191, Re-194 and Ir-199. In most cases, time-correlated, singles gamma-ray events provided the first spectroscopic data on excited states for each nuclide. In Pt-200 and Pt-201. the assignments are supported by gamma-gamma coincidences. Isomeric ratios provide additional information, such as half-life and transition energy constraints in particular cases. The level structures of the platinum isotopes are discussed, and comparisons are made with isomer systematics.

Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope O-23. The O-22 fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from O-23 at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with de-exciting gamma rays, allowing to discern between 220 ground-state and excited-states contributions. From the comparison of exclusive experimental momentum distributions for the one-neutron removal channel to theoretical momentum distributions calculated in an Eikonal model for the knockout process, and spin and parity assignment of I-pi = 1/2(+) was deduced for the 230 ground state. This result solved the existent experimental discrepancy.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Neutron deficient nuclei near Sn-100 have been produced by fragmentation of a 1 (.) A GeV Sn-112 beam. The fragments were separated, identified and stopped in a highly segmented silicon strip detector stack. This detector measured the total energy of emitted beta(+)-particles. gamma-radiation was measured with surrounding detectors. The half-lives for many nuclides have been determined for the first time and give important information for the following topics: For the heaviest particle-stable odd-odd nuclei Rh-90, Ag-94 and In-98 we observed for the first time fast beta-decays, compatible with superallowed Fermi transitions and confirmed such decays for 78y, 82 Nb and Tc. We have also observed 'long-lived T = 0 states in some of these nuclei. We measured the half-lives of all rp-process waiting-point nuclei from _Zr up to addition we find the proton drip line nucleus Y-77 to decay dominantly via beta-decay, To study the Gamov-Teller strength in the beta-decay near the doubly magic Sn-102 we measured the half-life, beta- and gamma-spectrum of Sn-102. We propose a level scheme for the daughter nuclide In-102 and deduce the Qamov-Teller strength (B-GT = 4.0 +/- 0.6). This is one of the largest values known.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Two-proton decay of the unbound nucleus Ne-16 , produced in one-neutron knockout from a 500 MeV/u Ne-17 beam, has been studied at GSI. The ground state, at a resonance energy 1.388(15) MeV, ( MeV) above the O-14 +p+p threshold, and two narrow resonances at MeV and 7.57(6) MeV have been investigated. A comparison of the energy difference between the first excited 2(+) state and the 0(+) ground state in Ne-16 with its mirror nucleus C-16 reveals a small Thomas-Ehrman shift (TES) of keV. A trend of the TES for the T = 2 quintet is obtained by completing the known data with a prediction for F-16 obtained from an IMME analysis. The decay mechanisms of the observed three resonances were revealed from an analysis of the energy and angular correlations of the O-14 +p+p decay products. The ground state decay can be considered as a genuine three-body (democratic) mode and the excited states decay sequentially via states in the intermediate nucleus F-15 , the 3.22 MeV state predominantly via the F-15 ground-state resonance, while the 7.57 MeV state decays via the 5/2(+) resonance in F-15 at 2.8 MeV above the O-14 +p+p threshold. Further, from an analysis of angular correlations, the spin-parity of the 7.57 MeV state has been determined as and assigned as the third 2(+) state in Ne-16 based on a comparison with C-16.

Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
- Heavy neutron-rich nuclei have been populated through the relativistic fragmentation of a Pb-208(82) beam at E/A = 1 GeV on a 2.5 g/cm(2) thick Be target. The synthesised nuclei were selected and identified in-flight using the fragment separator at GSI. Approximately 300 ns after production, the selected nuclei were implanted in an similar to 8 mm thick perspex stopper, positioned at the centre of the RISING gamma-ray detector spectrometer array. A previously unreported isomer with a half-life T-1/2 = 163(5) ns has been observed in the N = 126 closed-shell nucleus Au-205(79). Through gamma-ray singles and gamma-gamma coincidence analysis a level scheme was established. The comparison with a shell model calculation tentatively identifies the spin-parity of the excited states, including the isomer itself, which is found to be I-pi = (19/2(+)).

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- One-neutron knockout reactions in a 9 Be target have been investigated at relativistic energies, near 700 MeV/u, for a set of sd-shell, neutron-rich nuclei. The experiment was performed in the FRS spectrometer, at GSI. gamma-ray measurements were carried out by means of the MINIBALL gamma-ray spectrometer and allowed the determination of partial cross-sections and branching ratios corresponding to the final states of the emerging knockout fragments. Experimental results are presented for C-17, N-19, O-21 and F-25 projectiles. The role of excited states of the N - 1 fragments in the composition of the ground state of these neutron-rich projectiles is outlined in this work.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Results are presented from a one-neutron knockout experiment at relativistic energies of approximate to 420 A MeV on Sc51-55 using the GSI Fragment Separator as a two-stage magnetic spectrometer and the Miniball array for gamma-ray detection. Inclusive longitudinal momentum distributions and cross-sections were measured enabling the determination of the contributions corresponding to knockout from the nu p(1/2), nu p(3/2), (L = 1) and nu f(7/2), nu f(5/2) (L = 3) neutron orbitals. The observed L = 1 and L = 3 contributions are compared with theoretical cross-sections using eikonal knockout theory and spectroscopic factors from shell model calculations using the GXPF1A interaction. The measured inclusive knockout cross-sections generally follow the trends expected theoretically and given by the spectroscopic strength predicted from the shell model calculations. However, the deduced L = 1 cross-sections are generally 30-40% higher while the L = 3 contributions are about a factor of two smaller than predicted. This points to a promotion of neutrons from the nu f(7/2) to the nu p(3/2) orbital indicating a weakening of the N = 28 shell gap in these nuclei. While this is not predicted for the phenomenological GXPF1A interaction such a weakening is predicted by recent calculations using realistic low-momentum interactions V-lowk obtained by evolving a chiral N3LO nucleon-nucleon potential.

Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
- Nucleon knockout experiments using beryllium or carbon targets reveal a strong dependence of the quenching factors, i.e., the ratio (Rs) of theoretical to the experimental spectroscopic factors (C2S), on the proton-neutron asymmetry in the nucleus under study. However, this dependence is greatly reduced when a hydrogen target is used. To understand this phenomenon, exclusive H-1(Ne-17, 2p F-16) and inclusive C-12(Ne-17, 2p 1(6)F)X, 1(2)C(Ne-17, F-16)X as well as 1H(Ne-17,(16) F)X(X-denotes undetected reaction products) reactions with F-16 in the ground and excited states were anal- ysed. The longitudinal momentum distribution of F-16 and the correlations between the detached protons were studied. In the case of the carbon target, there is a significant deviation from the predictions of the eikonal model. The eikonal approximation was used to extract spectroscopic factor values (CS)-S-2. The experimental (CS)-S-2 value obtained with C target is markedly lower than that for H target. This is interpreted as rescattering due to simultaneous nucleon knockout from both reaction partners, Ne-17 and C-12.
