  • Walk the talk : Leader behavior in parental education groups
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - : Wiley. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 20:2, s. 173-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Expectant and new parents are offered parental education groups as a way to support their transition to parenthood. Group leadership in these groups has been found to be challenging. Using a qualitative and summative design, the aim of the present study was to investigate how health professionals describe their role in parental education groups compared to their actual behavior. Thirteen health professional leaders in antenatal and child health services were interviewed. These descriptions were compared with the leaders' actual behavior in video and audio-recordings of 16 different group sessions. The results revealed that regardless of how the leaders described their role, they acted as experts and left little time to parents for discussions and active participation. In particular, leaders who described themselves as discussion leaders did not "walk the talk"; that is, they did not do what they said they do when leading groups. That could be explained by lack of professional awareness, group leadership, and pedagogical skills. In order to provide high-quality parental support, leaders need training in group leadership and pedagogy combined with supervision and support on a regular basis.

  • Qualitative study of women's experiences of safe childbirth in maternity care
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - : Wiley. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 20:3, s. 331-337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few studies have focused on women's childbirth experiences in relation to patient safety. The aim of this study was to explore the meaning of safety as a process phenomenon by outlining women's positive and negative experiences of safety in childbirth. A descriptive explorative design was chosen and 16 interviews were conducted. Qualitative content analysis was used. One main theme emerged: safe childbirth through involvement and guidance, based on four subthemes. The characteristics of women's experiences of safe childbirth included the need to be informed and involved by sharing and receiving trustworthy information. Women's experiences of unsafe childbirth included lack of meaningful and trustworthy information that resulted in feelings of being misled or lulled into a false sense of security. Not being involved evoked feelings of being ignored. In conclusion, this study highlights issues of importance for safe maternity care. The perspectives of childbearing women can contribute to an understanding of how to achieve meaningful improvements to provide safer maternity care.

  • Parents’ experiences of their teenage children’s parenthood : An interview study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 20:1, s. 39-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we described and analyzed parents’ experiences of teenage parenthood and the provision of support to their teenage children who had recently have become parents. A quali- tative method was used. In-depth interviews with 24 participants were conducted, all parents of teenage parents. Data were analyzed using content analysis; four themes and 11 subthemes were identified. The results show that parents’ norms and values were strongly influenced by their religious beliefs. The participants had mixed emotions and reactions to their teenage chil- dren’s parenthood. Also participants were sources of support to the teenage parents and assisted them in their transition to parenthood. However, the participants also expressed the importance that their teenage children continue their education and avoid repeated pregnan- cies. This study highlights how emotional, instrumental, and informational support provided by parents to their teenagers can assist the latter in their transition to parenthood. In their work with teenage parents, healthcare providers can benefit from teenage parent's own parents involvement and experiences.

  • Self-care management of Thai Buddhists and Muslims with type 2 diabetes after an empowerment education program
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - : Wiley. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 20:3, s. 402-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to explore self-care management of Thai Buddhists and Muslims with type 2 diabetes and inadequate blood glucose levels, after they had been subjected to a 6-month diabetes empowerment education program. Twenty-seven participants (male and female) were selected through purposive convenience sampling for an explorative qualitative study. Semistructured focus group interviews with four open-ended questions were used to study the participants' self-care behavior at the beginning and the end of the program, and the data obtained were subjected to content analysis. At the end, one third of the participants had been able to reduce their blood glucose to acceptable levels. Most of the others had achieved reduced but irregular blood glucose levels; however, some did not achieve any reduction. Diet was the most difficult problem, and economic difficulties, incorrect knowledge, and misleading beliefs were barriers. In conclusion, an empowerment education program can substantially improve the outcome of self-care management for many people with type 2 diabetes. In the planning of such programs, barriers should be taken into account.

  • Hannah Arendt’s thoughts in relation to occupational science : A response to Turnbull
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Occupational Science. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1442-7591 .- 2158-1576. ; 25:2, s. 252-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In his response to our article “Hannah Arendt’s vita activa: A valuable contribution to occupational science,” Turnbull (2017) outlined some tensions he perceived with our discussion of “her approach to philosophy, politics and science”. In our reply, we express appreciation of his interest in Arendt related to occupational science and the contribution his article makes, as well as clarifying some points in his critique. We argue that Turnbull’s main arguments do not address our primary purpose of presenting Arendt’s vita activa and provide examples of its relevance for occupational science. We thus focused on activity-related aspects of Arendt’s thoughts, to raise awareness of this work amongst occupational scientists. However, we are thankful for Turnbull’s reflections, which broaden the insights of Arendt’s thinking and contribute to a better understanding of human occupation.

  • Occupational perspective of health among persons ageing in the context of migration
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Occupational Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1442-7591 .- 2158-1576. ; 25:1, s. 65-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the context of migration, ageing is described as a negative stressor for subjective perceptions of health in everyday life. Most research has adopted a biomedical perspective. An occupational perspective of health was the starting point for this study. The aim was to explore how older persons from Finland who are ageing in Sweden experienced health from an occupational perspective. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 persons who had migrated from Finland to Sweden as labour immigrants several decades ago. The interviews were analysed and interpreted using a hermeneutic approach. Participants experienced health when they managed their daily life occupations. Health was also reinforced through affiliation with others who shared similar life situations. A key health resource was maintaining a sense of dual belonging to the country of birth and to the host country. The present study revealed that the experience of health could be seen as a continuum in time and place, which creates a sense of belonging and continuity in life. Connections between health and doing, being and becoming are fundamental aspects to consider when enabling health in everyday life among older persons ageing in the context of migration.

  • Ingår i: Ideggyogyaszati Szemle. - : Literatura Medica Kiado. - 0019-1442 .- 2498-6208. ; 71:11-12, s. 405-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purpose: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves placing electrodes within specific deep brain nuclei. For movement disorders the most common indications are tremors, Parkinsons disease and dystonias. Surgeons mostly employ MR imaging for preoperative target selection. MR field geometrical distortion may contribute to target-selection error in the MR scan which can contribute to error in electrode placement. Methods: In this paper we compared the STN target planning coordinates in six parkinsonian DBS patients. Each patient underwent target planning in 1T and 3T MRI. We statistically compared and analysed the target-, and the fiducial coordinates in two different magnetic fileds. Results: The target coordinates showed no significant differences (Mann-Whitney test, p > 0.05), however we found significant difference in fiducial coordinates (p < 0.01), in 3T MRI it was more pronounced (mean ± SD: 0.8 ± 0.3 mm) comparing to 1T (mean ± SD: 0.4 ± 0.2 mm). Conclusion: Preliminary results showed no significant differences in planning of target coordinates comparing 1T to 3T magnetic fields.

  • Minimálisan invazív, extrapleuralis, anterolateralis gerincfeltárás : [Minimally invasive, extrapleural-anterolateral approach to the spine]
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Ideggyogyaszati Szemle. - : Literatura Medica Kiado. - 0019-1442 .- 2498-6208. ; 71:9-10, s. 293-301
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spine surgery, minimally invasive approaches (MIS) are getting accepted and more popular worldwide during the last decades. It is due to the reduced intraoperative blood loss, decreased infection rate, less postoperative pain and earlier discharge from hospital compared to traditional approaches. The present paper puts forward a minimally invasive extrapleural approach to the thoracic spine that is not applied in Hungary. This new approach, in contrast to the standard costotransversectomy, provides direct visual control over the ventral surface of the dural sac. Furthermore, contrary to the transthoracic way, following minimally invasive extrapleural surgery thoracic drainage and intensive care are not necessary. The approach can be applied safely in treatment of ventral or ventrolateral pathologies of the thoracic spine.

  • Medication usage among young adult women : A comparison between Sweden, the USA, and Greece
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - Oxford : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 10:1, s. 4-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study evaluated whether or not medication usage among young adult women differed across three countries. An additional aim was to evaluate the association between medication use and sociodemographic factors and exercise habits. A sample of 1098 young adult women were selected in Sweden, the USA, and Greece. Consistent medication usage by young adult women in the three countries related to oral contraceptives and vitamins; nevertheless, there were differences. The main differences were found in the use of laxatives, iron supplements, analgesics, antidepressants, and antacid medication. The most outstanding differences were the frequent use of laxatives in Sweden and vitamins in the USA. Different association patterns were found between medication use and culture, sociodemographic factors, and exercise. The assessment of medication use among young adult women can be performed very easily and provides an immediate indication of their well-being and needs for preventative care.

  • Gender differences in health habits and in motivation for a healthy lifestyle among Swedish university students
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - Richmond, VIC : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 7:2, s. 107-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to investigate gender differences in students’ health habits and motivation for a healthy lifestyle. The sample of students comprised a probability systematic stratified sample from each department at a small university in the south-west of Sweden (n = 479). A questionnaire created for this study was used for data collection. Self-rated health was measured by number of health complaints, where good health was defined as having less than three health complaints during the last month. A healthy lifestyle index was computed on habits related to smoking, alcohol consumption, food habits, physical activity and stress. Female students had healthier habits related to alcohol consumption and nutrition but were more stressed. Male students showed a high level of overweight and obesity and were less interested in nutrition advice and health enhancing activities. The gender differences are discussed in relation to the impact of stress on female students’ health, and the risk for male students in having unhealthy nutritional habits in combination with being physically inactive and drinking too much alcohol.
