  • Memorization and focus : important transferables between supplementary Islamic education and mainstream schooling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religious Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1442-018X .- 2199-4625. ; 66:2, s. 125-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the results of a participative study, involving a group of 27 British Muslim students aged 15–18, who were given the opportunity to reflect on the implications of having participated in two different ‘traditions’ of education: that is, Muslim supplementary education (in its various forms) and state mainstream schooling. The project was participative in that school senior managers had invited the researchers to carry out the research as part of their constant striving to identify the conditions under which students learn best. Both the design and outcomes of this research programme are presented and discussed in this article. One of the main findings is that the students experience the skills of memorization and focus as positive transferables. The findings will be discussed in terms of the concept of liturgical literacy.

  • The psychosocial work environment and burnout among Swedish registered and assistant nurses: The main, mediating, and moderating role of empowerment
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - : Wiley. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 9:3, s. 205-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to explore: the main effect of empowerment on burnout; empowerment as a mediator between the work environment and burnout; and empowerment as a moderator of the association between the work environment and burnout. In order to explore these effects, multiple regression analyses were performed on questionnaire data from 838 registered nurses and 518 assistant nurses in Sweden. The analyses showed that: empowerment has a negative association to burnout; empowerment has a mediating effect between the work environment (especially for control and social support) and burnout; and the moderating effect of empowerment on the association between the work environment and burnout was weak. The results suggest that: empowerment explains variation with regard to burnout over and above what can be explained by established work situation dimensions; the improvement of the work environment is associated with a higher sense of empowerment which, in turn, is related to lower degrees of burnout; and individual and group differences should be considered in workplace health promotion.

  • Psychometric properties of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professional Student's version : An Italian validation study with nursing students
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1441-0745 .- 1442-2018. ; 17:4, s. 483-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This methodological study was conducted to test the psychometric properties of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professional Student's version (JSE-HPS), in a convenience sample of 797 Italian nursing students and to describe their empathic engagement. Data were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, test-retest, correlation analysis, t-test, and analysis of variance method. Principal component factor extraction with Oblimin rotation on the first half of the sample was conducted. The analysis suggested a three-factor solution for 14 items: compassionate care/emotional engagement, perspective-taking, and standing in the patient's shoes. Confirmatory factor analysis on the second half of the sample showed good fit indexes for the 14-item solution, indicated by the exploratory factor analysis, and the 20 item solution of the scale, with the exception of one item. Test-retest correlation was 0.50 (P<0.001) for the overall scale. Results from group comparisons and correlations are also provided and discussed. The Italian version of the JSE-HPS is a psychometrically sound tool. The translated 20-item solution is also suitable to carry out cross-cultural comparisons.

  • Collaboration is key: The actual experience of disciplines working together in child care
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nursing and Health Sciences. - : Wiley. - 1441-0745. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Promoting young children's academic and developmental outcomes can no longer be achieved by the single efforts of one profession, but requires professionals to work together in inter-professional teams to understand the complexity of young children's lives. Collaboration in early childhood programs involves health professionals, educators, and other professionals sharing information, validating each other's roles, and providing input around which strategies promote positive outcomes for all children. There are, however, limited studies available within early childhood education on inter-disciplinary relationships between nurses and teachers. This paper helps to fill this void by exploring the relationship of an early childhood teacher and maternal and child health nurse working alongside one another in an Australian kindergarten. Through a narrative approach, a number of characteristics of the relationship were identified as key elements to a productive relationship. Findings are important for health professionals working with early childhood educators. By understanding the complexity within and between disciplines, professionals can work effectively to support young children and their families.

  • Occupational balance as described by older workers over the age of 65
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Occupational Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1442-7591 .- 2158-1576. ; 26:1, s. 40-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Occupational balance promotes health, knowledge about occupational balance among older workers is important. This qualitative study aimed to describe occupational balance among older workers in Sweden. Six focus groups and two individual interviews were conducted with 26 workers, aged 65 years and older. The findings showed that drawing on abilities and resources, a harmonious mix of occupations, as well as congruence with values and personal meaning contributed to the participants’ occupational balance. From a work perspective, organizational factors such as support from managers and having the freedom to influence work tasks, as well as work time, also contributed to occupational balance. The participants changed their occupational pattern to achieve a more harmonious mix of occupations. This change was based on values and experience derived through the meaning of occupations, and on abilities and resources. Enabling older people to achieve occupational balance and promoting health may contribute to possibilities for an extended working life and active ageing.

  • To Gain Knowledge of How to be Challenging : Preschool Mathematics Professional Development
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mathematics Teacher Education and Development. - : Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia. - 1442-3901. ; 19:3, s. 36-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of freely-available web-based materials in professional development has rarely been investigated in mathematics education research. In this article, the responses to a survey by 267 preschool teachers about their use of online professional development materials are described. The web materials were based on a design model and the survey results are compared with its principles which focus on content, tasks and relationships. The results show that some of the content in the written materials was considered difficult to understand. Nevertheless, the requirement to work on the material in groups and to carry out tasks in their own preschools supported the teachers to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the content over time. Generally, the teachers found the material valuable for gaining knowledge about mathematics for young children that they could implement as tasks to challenge children in their preschools.
