  • Benefits and barriers for the use of digital channels among small tourism companies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 19:1, s. 27-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to identify and explain perceived benefits and barriers for the use of digital channels by tourism companies in Swedish Lapland. Data were collected through exploratory interviews and an online survey to tourism companies in the region, most of which are small firms. Through factor analysis, we identified four barriers (Financial risk, Time constraints, External environment, and Lack of IT expertise and strategy) and three benefits (Internal efficiency, Marketing and competition, and Financial benefit) connected to the use of digital channels for customer communication. Results suggest that having staff with work time specifically reserved for working with digital channels, rather than trying to manage this alongside other tasks, increases the perceived benefits and decreases barriers related to Information and Communication (ICT) use. Moreover, analysis shows that the most important factors explaining tourism firms’ intentions to use digital channels are the perceived benefits connected to marketing and competition, as well as the perceived financial risk, which works as a barrier. Contrary to expectations, time constraints had a significant positive correlation with the intention to use digital channels. This implies that tourism firms in Swedish Lapland increasingly recognize the necessity of investing time in online communications in order to attract more visitors.

  • Festivals in the Barents Region
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 9:2-3, s. 130-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper reports from a multiple case study investigating three music festivals located in the Barents region, namely the Festspel i Pite lvdal (Pite, Sweden), the Festspillene i Nord-Norge (Harstad, Norway) and the Jutajaiset Folklorefestivaali (Rovaniemi, Finland). The aim of the reported study was to investigate how these festivals cooperated with actors in their surroundings. Furthermore, the purpose was to explore the study's data through the perspectives of network and stakeholder theory. The data consisted of field notes from observations of 58 festival events; 10 in-depth interviews with festival administrators and official representatives of the festivals' host municipalities; and documentation. The data was analysed using meaning condensation and structuring displays. Through the theory-related exploration of the study's data, three themes emerged: first, the festivals cooperated with multiple stakeholders, who assumed multiple roles; second, the festivals and their stakeholders would sometimes enter into a state of symbiosis; and third, the festivals were seen to engage in long-stretched, "loose" and glocal networks. The three themes appeared as interrelated and could all be understood as strategies, which the festivals employed in order to increase their sustainability. The findings could also be connected to a typology of festivals in the context of institutionalization.

  • Environmental sustainability in restaurants. A systematic review and future research agenda on restaurant adoption of green practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 22:4-5, s. 303-330
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adverse impact that restaurants have on the environment has received widespread attention in the last decade from both practice and academia. The current study aims to find, catalog, and synthesize the research body addressing green issues in the restaurant industry. We utilize the systematic literature review method to identify and analyze 68 research articles addressing environmental unsustainability problems in the restaurant industry. The research profile identifies the time trends of publication, key journals, countries studied, methods used, and restaurant types discussed in these studies. The results indicate that green restaurant research has grown exponentially recently and is now past its infancy. Through a detailed qualitative content analysis, we uncover five key thematic foci: stakeholders and their roles, sources of environmental unsustainability, green initiatives adopted by restaurants to address environmental unsustainability, outcomes of adopting green practices, and various ways of measuring greening practices. Research limitations and gaps of each of the themes are presented, with potential future research questions proposed for each gap. We then summarize the results of our review in a green restaurant ecosystem research framework.

  • Environmental sustainability practices and strategies in the rural tourism and hospitality sector: a systematic literature review and suggestions for future research
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 23:1, s. 1-28
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental sustainability in the rural tourism and hospitality (hereafter abbreviated RT) sector has received increased attention in the last decade. Although several reviews have examined sustainable tourism, a dedicated review of environmental sustainability initiatives in the RT sector is absent. To address this gap, we present a systematic literature review of 100 research articles addressing RT and environmental sustainability from 39 journals. The review indicates that this area is growing and primed for further research. We present three main contributions. First, we identify different stakeholders of RT environmental sustainability. Second, we summarize the driving and barrier roles of each stakeholder in environmentally sustainable RT. Third, we present the benefits of environmentally sustainable RT. We observe the pivotal roles played by entrepreneurs, community, tourists, and policymakers in the development of environmentally sustainable RT but note that stakeholders like corporations, non-governmental organizations, and media have received little or no attention. Based on the gaps we identified, we outline five suggestions for future research in the area and present for each a variety of possible research questions. We then summarize our findings into a RT environmental sustainability framework and discuss the academic, practical, and policy implications of the study.

  • A systematic literature review on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and hotels: past achievements and future promises in the hospitality sector
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 23:2-3, s. 141-175
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study offers a comprehensive and critical systematic literature review (SLR) alongside an analysis of recent literature regarding the significance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the hotel industry. The study utilizes the SLR method to consolidate the relevant literature on CSR initiatives in the hotel industry context. Content analysis led to the identification of 100 pertinent studies, which contributed to the formation of diverse research themes, identification of research gaps, exploration of potential future research paths, and the creation of a research framework. The five thematic areas of research are the role of (1) employees in CSR initiatives, (2) customers in CSR initiatives, (3) CSR and business performance, (4) CSR and reporting, and (5) CSR and sustainability. The findings are synthesized into a hotel-based CSR research framework. By providing valuable insights on strengthening CSR in the hotel industry, this study is one of the first SLR study that focuses explicitly on CSR in hotels and will be valuable for both practitioners and researchers.

  • I just work here! Employees as co-creators of the employer brand
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 23:1, s. 73-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the role of employees as both a target group and co-creators of employer brand equity in tourism and hospitality. Extant research has largely focused on the effects of external employer brands; however, studies on internal employer branding have been lacking. The research problem is addressed through the conceptual lens of employer brand equity. To provide empirical insights into employee experiences, exploratory in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 employees in hotels, restaurants, and retail stores in Northern Sweden. While employees constitute a target market for internal employer branding, they also co-create the employer value proposition. Employees act as brand members, representatives, advocates and influencers, increasing knowledge about the organization internally and externally. However, in practice, companies in the service sector seem to place more focus on the customer experience than on reminding the employees of the brand promise towards them. This study identifies and describes the role of employees in the employer branding process by developing a new conceptual framework. Thereby, it adds to the understanding of co-creation in employer branding, an under-researched area which has been suggested to become a new paradigm in the employer branding literature.

  • Cooperative Strategies for Improving the Tourism Industry in Remote Geographic Regions : An Addition to Trust and Commitment Theory with one Key Mediating Construct
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 8:1, s. 48-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The success of cooperative relationships is influenced by interorganizational commitment, which is a long-run goal of networks. Our research examined cooperative relationships in the tourism industry to better understand what makes them successful. The study is an extension of previous empirical research on commitment. The overall research questions were: “What factors lead to interorganizational commitment in remote tourism destinations?” and “What are the relationships between the factors?” A literature search was conducted to identify factors related to organizational commitment. Search findings suggested a model proposing that interpersonal commitment mediates the effect of trust and reciprocity on interorganizational commitment. Data for the model was collected from a sample of tourism firms in successful cooperative networks. The theoretical model was purified based on convergent, nomological and discriminant validity as well as construct reliability. Our findings demonstrated that the relationship between trust and interorganizational commitment is in fact mediated by interpersonal commitment. We confirmed that reciprocity is directly related to interorganizational commitment, and is not mediated by interpersonal commitment. Thus, tourism firms should develop cooperative strategies in their networks by focusing on enhancing interpersonal commitment through trust, thereby ultimately helping to strengthen interorganizational commitment.
