    • Obesity and type 2 diabetes increase worldwide at an epidemic rate. It is expected that by the year 2030 around 500 million people will have diabetes; predominantly type 2 diabetes. The CCN family of proteins has become of interest in both metabolic and other common human diseases because of their effects on mesenchymal stem cell (MSCs) proliferation and differentiation as well as being important regulators of fibrosis. We here review current knowledge of the WNT1 inducible signaling pathway protein 2 (CCN5/WISP2). It has been shown to be an important regulator of both these processes through effects on both the canonical WNT and the TGF ss pathways. It is also under normal regulation by the adipogenic commitment factor BMP4, in contrast to conventional canonical WNT ligands, and allows MSCs to undergo normal adipose cell differentiation. CCN5/WISP2 is highly expressed in, and secreted by, MSCs and is an important regulator of MSCs growth. In a transgenic mouse model overexpressing CCN5/WISP2 in the adipose tissue, we have shown that it is secreted and circulating in the blood, the mice develop hypercellular white and brown adipose tissue, have increased lean body mass and enlarged hypercellular hearts. Obese transgenic mice had improved insulin sensitivity. Interestingly, the anti-fibrotic effect of CCN5/WISP2 is protective against heart failure by inhibition of the TGF ss pathway. Understanding how CCN5/WISP2 is regulated and signals is important and may be useful for developing new treatment strategies in obesity and metabolic diseases and it can also be a target in regenerative medicine.

  • Vertical phase separation in spin-coated films of a low bandgap polyfluorene/PCBM blend - Effects of specific substrate interaction

    • We report on the effect of the substrate on the vertical phase separation in spin-coated thin films of poly [(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-5,5-4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benz othiadiazole] (APFO-3) blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Compositional depth profiles of the films are measured by dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). We found that changing the substrate from silicon to gold affects the composition profile near the substrate interface. This is caused by a specific interaction between the polymer (APFO-3) and the gold surface, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The composition profile in the area away from the substrate interface, as well as the enrichment of the free surface with APFO-3, remain however unaffected by the choice of substrate. The vertical composition was also analysed for APFO-3:PCBM films spin-coated on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated with a thin layer of (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS).   • Towards Oxide Electronics: a Roadmap

    • At the end of a rush lasting over half a century, in which CMOS technology has been experiencing a constant and breathtaking increase of device speed and density, Moore’s law is approaching the insurmountable barrier given by the ultimate atomic nature of matter. A major challenge for 21st century scientists is finding novel strategies, concepts and materials for replacing silicon-based CMOS semiconductor technologies and guaranteeing a continued and steady technological progress in next decades. Among the materials classes candidate to contribute to this momentous challenge, oxide films and heterostructures are a particularly appealing hunting ground. The vastity, intended in pure chemical terms, of this class of compounds, the complexity of their correlated behaviour, and the wealth of functional properties they display, has already made these systems the subject of choice, worldwide, of a strongly networked, dynamic and interdisciplinary research community. Oxide science and technology has been the target of a wide four-year project, named Towards Oxide-Based Electronics (TO-BE), that has been recently running in Europe and has involved as participants several hundred scientists from 29 EU countries. In this review and perspective paper, published as a final deliverable of the TO-BE Action, the opportunities of oxides as future electronic materials for Information and Communication Technologies ICT and Energy are discussed. The paper is organized as a set of contributions, all selected and ordered as individual building blocks of a wider general scheme. After a brief preface by the editors and an introductory contribution, two sections follow. The first is mainly devoted to providing a perspective on the latest theoretical and experimental methods that are employed to investigate oxides and to produce oxide-based films, heterostructures and devices. In the second, all contributions are dedicated to different specific fields of applications of oxide thin films and heterostructures, in sectors as data storage and computing, optics and plasmonics, magnonics, energy conversion and harvesting, and power electronics.

  • User oriented end-station on VUV pump-probe magneto-optical ellipsometry at ELI beamlines

    • A state of the art ellipsometer for user operations is being implemented at ELI Beamlines in Prague, Czech Republic. It combines three of the most promising and exotic forms of ellipsometry: VUV, pump-probe and magneto-optical ellipsometry. This new ellipsometer covers a spectral operational range from the NIR up to the VUV, with high through-put between 1 and 40 eV. The ellipsometer also allows measurements of magneto-optical spectra with a 1 kHz switchable magnetic field of up to 1.5 T across the sample combining ellipsometry and Kerr spectroscopy measurements in an unprecedented spectral range. This form of generalized ellipsometry enables users to address diagonal and off-diagonal components of the dielectric tensor within one measurement. Pump-probe measurements enable users to study the dynamic behaviour of the dielectric tensor in order to resolve the time-domain phenomena in the femto to 100 ns range.

  • Incorporation of graphene nano platelets in suspension plasma sprayed alumina coatings for improved tribological properties

    • Graphene possesses high fracture toughness and excellent lubrication properties, which can be exploited to enhance tribological performance of coating systems utilized to combat wear. In this work, suspension plasma spray (SPS) process was employed to deposit a composite, graphene nano-platelets (GNP) incorporated alumina coating. For comparison, monolithic alumina was also deposited utilizing identical spray conditions. The as-deposited coatings were characterized in detail for their microstructure, porosity content, hardness, fracture toughness and phase composition. Raman analysis of the as-deposited composite coating confirmed retention of GNP. The composite coating also showed good microstructural integrity, comparable porosity, higher fracture toughness and similar alumina phase composition as the monolithic alumina coating. The as-deposited coatings were subjected to dry sliding wear tests. The GNP incorporated composite coating showed lower CoF and lower specific wear rate than the pure alumina coating. Additionally, the counter surface also showed a lower wear rate in case of the composite coating. Post-wear analysis performed by SEM/EDS showed differences in the coating wear track and in the ball wear track of monolithic and composite coatings. Furthermore, Raman analysis in the wear track of composite coating confirmed the presence of GNP. The micro-indentation and wear test results indicate that the presence of GNP in the composite coating aided in improving fracture toughness, lowering CoF and specific wear rate compared to the monolithic coating. Results from this work demonstrated retention of GNP in an SPS processed coating, which can be further exploited to design superior wear-resistant coatings.

  • A micro-spectroscopy study on the influence of chemical residues from nanofabrication on the nitridation chemistry of Al nanopatterns

    • We applied spatially resolved photoelectron spectroscopy implemented with an X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM) using soft X-ray synchrotron radiation to identify the compositional and morphological inhomogeneities of a SiO2/Si substrate surface nanopatterned with Al before and after nitridation. The nanofabrication was conducted by a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)-based e-beam lithography and a fluorine-based reactive ion etching (RIE), followed by Al metalization and acetone lift-off. Three types of chemical residues were identified before nitridation: (1) fluorocarbons produced and accumulated mainly during RIE process on the sidewalls of the nanopatterns; (2) a thick Al-bearing PMMA layer and/or (3) a thin PMMA residue layer owing to unsuccessful or partial lift-off of the e-beam unexposed PMMA between the nanopatterns. The fluorocarbons actively influenced the surface chemical composition of the nanopatterns by forming Al-F compounds. After nitridation, in the PMMA residue-free area, the Al-F compounds on the sidewalls were decomposed and transformed to AIN. The PMMA residues between the nanopatterns had no obvious influence on the surface chemical composition and nitridation properties of the Al nanopatterns. They were only partially decomposed by the nitridation. The regional surface morphology of the nanopatterns revealed by the secondary electron XPEEM was consistent with the scanning electron microscopy results.

    • We report a study on the spatial homogeneity and nitridation of a nanopattern template using a spectroscopic photoemission and low energy electron microscopy. The template was composed of Al nanodots which were patterned into a SiO2/Si(1 1 1) surface using e-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. The template exhibited a global inhomogeneity in terms of the local topography, Al composition and structure of the individual nanopatterns. After nitridation, the individual nanopatterns were diminished, more corrugated and faceted. The nitridated nanopatterns were structurally ordered but differently orientated. The nitridation effectively removed the fluorine contaminants by decomposition of the fluorocarbon sidewalls, resulting in the AlN nanopatterns and partially nitridated Si substrate surface outside the nanopattern domains.

  • Kagome-like silicene: A novel exotic form of two-dimensional epitaxial silicon

    • Since the discovery of graphene, intensive efforts have been made in search of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials. Decreasing the materials dimensionality to their ultimate thinness is a promising route to unveil new physical phenomena, and potentially improve the performance of devices. Among recent 2D materials, analogs of graphene, the group IV elements have attracted much attention for their unexpected and tunable physical properties. Depending on the growth conditions and substrates, several structures of silicene, germanene, and stanene can be formed. Here, we report the synthesis of a Kagome-like lattice of silicene on aluminum (1 1 1) substrates. We provide evidence of such an exotic 2D Si allotrope through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations, high-resolution core-level (CL) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, along with Density Functional Theory calculations.

    •   In this paper, experimental results of the investigation of the periodic structure on thermoelectric semiconductor Cu2Se are presented. Periodic structures were formed on surfaces of semiconductors due to multi-beam interaction of Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, which was operated in the lowest order of Gaussian mode and pulse duration 7 ns. Surface temperature evolution and transient reflectivity are studied during laser treatment. Creation of Cu islands in the maximal intensity of interference pattern was found.

    • Vibrational properties of surface species formed upon NH3 adsorption on Pt/SiO2, model system for the gas sensitive part in ammonia sensors based on field effect devices, have been investigated with in situ DRIFT spectroscopy. Experiments have been performed for a series of samples with different Pt loading at three temperatures, 50, 150 and 300°C, and in the absence and presence of oxygen. In addition, electronic structure calculations and vibrational analysis have been performed within the density functional theory (DFT) for NH3 and NH2 species adsorbed on platinum and hydroxylated silica model systems. Observations from both DRIFT spectra and DFT calculations indicate that NH3 is more strongly bound to platinum than to silanol groups on the SiO2 support. Vibrational modes assigned to NH2 appeared in the DRIFT experiments, indicative of NH3 dissociation, an interpretation supported by the calculations. Exposure of O2 was found to have minor effect on the vibrational spectrum at 50°C. However, at 150°C an increase of the vibration band assigned to the NH2 surface species was observed together with formation of gas phase N2O for samples with high platinum content. Thus, ammonia is oxidised over Pt at this temperature and oxygen is most likely facilitating ammonia dissociation. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
