  • System Characteristics and Contextual Constraints for Future Fighter Decision Support
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 7:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on decision support systems for fighter aircraft has to regard future manned and unmanned cooperating aircraft. This paper highlights system characteristics and contextual constraints to guide research as well as system development. Long term trends have been identified for the domain that has to be coped with, including the transformation of the fighter pilot from pilot to tactical decision maker. Automation strategies have to be developed to support manned and unmanned aircraft in a joint cognitive system. For instance, for intelligent fighter pilot support, for distributed unmanned and manned decision making, function allocation has to be concerned. For function allocation it is important not only to regard which agent is best at performing a task but also to regard the risk/cost of performing a task in this kind of potentially hazardous context.

  • CbSSDF: A Two-Layer Conceptual Graph Approach to Web Services Description and Composition : A Scenario Based Solution Analysis and Comparison with OWL-S
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 2:4, s. 82-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Web services as a new distributed system technology have been widely adopted by industries in the areas, such as enterprise application integration (EAI), business process management (BPM), and virtual organization (VO). However, lack of semantics in the current Web service standards has become a major barrier in service discovery and composition. To tackle the semantic issues of Web services, this paper proposes a comprehensive semantic service description framework – CbSSDF and a two-step service discovery mechanism based on CbSSDF—to help service users to easily locate their required services. The authors give a detailed explanation of CbSSDF, and then evaluate the framework by comparing it with OWL-S to examine how the proposed framework can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service discovery and composition. The evaluation is carried out by analysing the different proposed solutions based on these two frameworks for achieving a series of tasks in a scenario.

  • Capturing process knowledge for multi-channel information systems : A case study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 3:1, s. 78-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a case study is used to evaluate the business process characterizing modeling (BPCM) language. The BPCM-framework is meant to guide both business stakeholders and model developers during model-based development. The focus of the approach is the use of BPCM as a starting point for capturing process knowledge when planning and developing information system support. Based on information within the BPCM models, goal models and process models can be developed and used for further development of the BPCM model. The approach in this paper is evaluated using a case study related to the arrangement of a conference series. Through the case study, the authors have confirmed the potential usability and usefulness of BPCM for early stage knowledge capture, getting input for further improvement of the approach.

  • Capturing Consumer Preference in System Requirements Through Business Strategy
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 4:4, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A core concern within Business-IT alignment is coordinating strategic initiatives and plans with Information Systems (IS). Substantial work has been done on linking strategy to requirements for IS development, but it has usually been focused on the core value exchanges offered by the business, and thus overlooking other aspects that influence the implementation of strategy. One of these, consumer preferences, has been proven to influence the successful provisioning of the business's customer value proposition, and this study aims to establish a conceptual link between both strategy and consumer preferences to system requirements. The core contention is that reflecting consumer preferences through business strategy in system requirements allows for the development of aligned systems, and therefore systems that better support a consumer orientation. The contribution of this paper is an approach to establish such alignment, with this being accomplished through the proposal of a consumer preference meta-model mapped to a business strategy meta-model further linked to a system requirements technique. The validity of this proposal is demonstrated through a case study carried out within an institution of higher education in Sweden.

  • A Look Behind Conceptual Modeling Constructs in Information System Analysis and Design
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 1:1, s. 79-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information systems can be conceptualized in a number of ways. Most methodologies propose to analyze separately process and data semantics by projecting them into totally different diagram types. This system analysis and design tradition is very strong in most modeling approaches such as structured analysis as well as object-oriented design. Structural and behavioral aspects are complementary. They cannot be analyzed in isolation. Lack of a conceptual modeling approach, which can be used for verification of semantic integrity among various types of diagrams, is the cornerstone of frustration for information system architects. Inconsistency, incompleteness and ambiguity of conceptual views create difficulties in verification and validation of technical system architectures by business experts, who determine the organizational strategies. Consequently, the traditional information system methodologies are not able to bridge a communication gap among business experts and IT-system designers. Various interpretations of semantic relations in conceptual modeling approaches make the system analysis and design process more art than science. It creates difficulties to formulate comprehensible principles of decomposition and separation of concerns. Unambiguous definition of aggregation and generalization is necessary for breaking down information system functionality into coherent non-over¬lapping components. This paper concentrates on conceptual modeling enhancements, which help to avoid semantic integrity problems in conceptualizations on various levels of abstraction. The presented conceptual modeling approach is based on a single type of diagram, which can be used for reasoning on semantic integrity between business process and data across organizational and technical system boundaries.

  • Conceptual Modeling Method for Separation of Concerns and Integration of Structure and Behavior
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - New York : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 3:1, s. 48-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Identification of discontinuities, separation of concerns and dealing with the evolutionary changes of requirements is difficult in conceptual modeling. Another restriction is that a limited human mind allows focusing on one particular requirement at a time in isolation. One fundamental problem is that all conventional conceptual modeling techniques are dealing with collections of loosely linked meta-models, which are defined by the different types of diagrams. Typically, system development methods project interactive, behavioral and structural aspects of information systems’ conceptual representations into disparate views. Therefore, the semantic integrity of various architecture dimensions is difficult to achieve. The difficulties are stemming from the paradigmatic mismatch between static and dynamic constructs. The advantage of the conceptual modeling approach presented in this paper is flexibility in dealing with the evolutionary changes of requirements. Visualization of interplay among structural, interactive and behavioral aspects helps to separate different concerns and to identify discontinuities of conceptual representations. It is demonstrated by case study examples that sequential, underlying, enclosing, overriding and overlaying interaction loops between actors provide the foundation for the composition of complex scenarios, which span across organizational and technical system boundaries. The presented semantic integration and system decomposition principles target both business process modeling experts and information system designers, because they are essential for introducing evolutionary changes and for managing complexity of information system conceptualizations.

  • Modeling Approach for Integration and Evolution of Information System Conceptualizations
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 2:1, s. 45-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most conventional conceptual modeling approaches are not putting into a foreground interaction dependencies between actors. This is one of the main reasons why it is difficult to apply them for managing complexity of conceptual representations. The goal of this paper is to present conceptual modeling method, which allows constructing graphical representations of scenarios with a more comprehensible structure. Using simple interaction loops between organizational and technical components help designers to separate crosscutting concerns in system engineering without the requirement to specify a complete solution. The examples of sequential, iterative, parallel and alternative behavior are analyzed to demonstrate conceptual descriptions of use-case scenarios. The overlaying and underlying interaction loops among actors are easier to understand, extend and maintain.

  • Resource Analysis and Classification for Purpose Driven Value Model Design
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 1:1, s. 56-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business and IT systems are today facing an ever more complex environment characterised by openness, variety, and change. In order to cope with this environmental complexity, organisations need effective instruments for managing their knowledge. Essential among these instruments are enterprise models, i.e. computational representations of the structure, processes, information, resources, and goals of organisations. When using enterprise modeling for analysing and designing business scenarios and networks, the reasoning should not start from business processes and activities but from notions at a higher level of abstraction. This can be done by focusing on the business motivation behind processes and expressing it in value models, i.e. models focusing on high level and business oriented objects like resources, actors, resource conversions, and resource exchanges. The declarative orientation of value models make them attractive for a number of different purposes, including profitability analysis, marketing analysis, process design, and service analysis. As value models can be used for many different purposes, there is a risk that they will become overloaded, complex, and difficult to understand. Therefore, when designing a value model, its purpose should be explicitly stated in order to focus the analysis. The goal of this article is to show how the purpose of a value model should influence its design. The approach builds on an analysis and classification of resources, resource conversions, and resource exchanges.

  • Modelling Information Demand in an Enterprise Context : Method, Notation, and Lessons Learned
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 2:3, s. ?-?
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information overload is perceived as a common problem in organisations and enterprises, which calls for new organisational and technological approaches for more pertinent and accurate information supply. The paper contributes to addressing this problem by proposing a method for information demand modelling, which contributes to capturing and understanding the information demand of roles in organisations. This method consists to a large extent of an application of enterprise modelling techniques. Illustrated by a case from automotive industries, lessons learned from information demand modelling are presented and discussed. This includes the specific perspective taken in the method for information demand analysis, common challenges experienced in demand modelling, the validity of recommendations from participative enterprise modelling for information demand modelling. Furthermore, the paper introduces the notation applied for information demand models and discusses refinement process of this notation.
