  • Macroinvertebrates’ community structure in Rivers Kipkaren and Sosiani, River Nzoia basin, Kenya
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ecology and the Natural Environment. - : Academic Journals. - 2006-9847. ; 3:2, s. 39-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Benthic macroinvertebrates from Rivers Kipkaren and Sosiani in the upper reaches of River Nzoiabasin, Kenya, were sampled semi-quantitatively monthly from December 2006 to May 2007 using a0.5 mm mesh size scoop net in the riffles, pools and runs. Seven sampling sites were selected on theareas of the rivers along a longitudinal gradient in relation to anthropogenic impact. Physicochemicalparameters were measured in situ, while specific chemical parameters were determinedcalometrically in the laboratory using standard methods. Habitat and land use characteristics werealso recorded. A total of 1499 macroinvertebrates belonging to 13 orders, 28 families and 31 generawere collected. The orders Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera and Coleoptera were taxonomically richest.Overall, a total of 31 genera for River Kipkaren dominated by the EPT and 19 macroinvertebrategenera for the lower River Sosiani dominated by dipterans were recorded. Conductivity, oxygen andtotal nitrogen varied significantly (p < 0.05) between sampled sites, but not temporally. The results ofredundancy analysis using 9 dominant macroinvertebrate genera revealed a distinction betweenimpacted and the less impacted sites and the physico-chemical parameters associated with thisdistinction.

  • Biofuel potential and land availability : The case of Rufiji District, Tanzania
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ecology and the Natural Environment. - : Academic Journals. - 2006-9847. ; 6:11, s. 389-397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Africa’s attractiveness to potential biofuel investors is based on the assumption that there is plenty of unused land available for investment in different countries of the continent. However, their postulations are not based on any concrete studies about land availability at country, regional or local level. This study investigates land availability for potential biofuel investment at the local level, using Rufiji district in Tanzania as a case study. We have analyzed different land cover/land use types and separated them into areas of potential biofuel investment and areas where biofuel investment is not possible by a process of elimination. The results suggest that land availability is inadequate to meet the needs of biofuel investors. The land assumed to be unused or underutilized by biofuel investors is either part of the fallow system or used to harvest natural resources and for other traditional uses. Expropriating the assumed idle land will adversely impact on the livelihoods of the local communities.

  • Green marketing or green wash? : A comparative study of consumers' behavior on selected Eco and Fair trade labeling in Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ecology and the Natural Environment. - : Academic Journals. - 2006-9847. ; 2:6, s. 104-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Green marketing is in the focus of present marketing strategy due to the pressure that comes from inclined environmental awareness in the global climate change. Different initiatives have been considered to support environmental programme and practices and one of the meaningful business initiatives is eco or fair trade labeling. Eco-label provides the information of product contribution in the context of environmental burden to the consumers. Different label initiatives are available in the present business market as a provider of ‘white goods’, however, the basic principles of the label initiative are ignored in most of the business practices. The study compared eight selected eco-brands which were used on the Swedish market. Comparison was based on environmental justice and ecosystem services perspectives. The study showed that most of the eco brands do not comply with environmental justice and ecosystem services in their label policy initiatives. Moreover, there is a gap between policy and practices. Questionnaire survey showed that environment is an important criterion for consumers while purchasing consumer products. Eco-label is an important tool; however, this tool is not communicating to consumers to its expected role.
